Social rank and affiliation in social anxiety disorder.

The present study examined the interpersonal lives of individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD). According to evolutionary and interpersonal theories, we construed the interpersonal world using the social rank and the affiliation psychological systems. Two studies assessed measures of social rank, affiliation, social anxiety and depression among a population of treatment-seeking individuals with SAD. In study 1, individuals with SAD without major depressive disorder (MDD; n=42) were compared to healthy controls (n=47). In study 2, individuals with SAD and MDD (n=45) were compared to indiv

Association between sexual minority status and suicidal behavior among Chinese adolescents: A moderated mediation model.

BACKGROUND: Evidence shows sexual minority adolescents have a higher risk of suicidality than their heterosexual peers due to minority stressors or lack of social support, but it remains unclear how the combined effects of these influence factors impact suicidality in this population. In this study, we examine whether school victimization mediates association between sexual minority status and suicidal behavior of adolescents and explore whether such mediation is moderated by interpersonal relationships. METHODS: We sampled a large nationally representative dataset comprising data collected f

The Revised Animal Preference Test: An Implicit Probe of Tendencies Toward Psychopathy.

At least some forms of interpersonal violence could follow from a vision of the self as a fierce, dominant creature. This should be particularly true when psychopathic (more proactive, less reactive) tendencies are involved. Possible relations of this type were examined in two studies (total N = 278) in which college student samples were presented with a new, structured version of an old projective test typically used in psychotherapy contexts. Participants were presented with predator-prey animal pairs (e.g., lion-zebra) that were not explicitly labeled as such. For each pair, the person was

Estimating the Epidemiology and Quantifying the Damages of Parental Separation in Children and Adolescents.

Parental separation is linked to multiple negative outcomes for children in all spheres of life. A field study was designed to estimate the epidemiology and to quantify the outcomes on the wellbeing of children from separated parents. Thus, data on socio-economic status, psychological adjustment, behavioral disorders, social relations, self-concept, and academic achievement were gathered from 346 children and adolescents, 173 separated parents, and 173 parents from intact families in the paediatric catchment area of Galicia (Spain). The results showed that parental separation had a significant

Impact of mentoring on socio-emotional and mental health outcomes of youth with learning disabilities and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Learning disabilities (LD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are often accompanied by significant socio-emotional impairments and mental health challenges. However, there is a lack of controlled, quantitative research on potential interventions to address this issue. The current study evaluated the impact of a near-peer mentoring program for youth with LD/ADHD designed to promote socio-emotional well-being. METHODS: Youth with LD/ADHD who participated in the mentoring program (Mentored; n=99) were compared to non-mentored youth with LD/ADHD (Control-NM; n=51) and

Authoritative Parenting Is Associated with Healthier Lifestyle Patterns in University Students.

Background: Health-promoting lifestyle behaviors established during young adulthood play a crucial role in shaping long-term physical and mental health outcomes, including the risk of chronic disease, psychological well-being, and quality of life. Parenting styles represent an important psychosocial factor that may be associated with health-related behaviors; however, evidence regarding their association with multidimensional health-promoting lifestyles among university students remains limited. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 700 university students. Parenting styles (aut

Cross-Lagged Panel Network Analysis Between Internet Addiction and Depression: Gender and Mid-Late Adolescent Differences.

Although increasing evidence links internet addiction (IA) with depressive symptoms in adolescents, the temporal dynamics between specific symptoms, especially across developmental stages and genders, remains insufficiently understood. This study aimed to examine the dynamic longitudinal relations between IA and depression at the symptom level and to characterize how these relations evolve from mid- to late-adolescence. A total of 2,864 Chinese adolescents (49.2% males; aged 12-18 years) participated in this study. Depressive symptoms and IA were assessed using the Center for Epidemiologic Stu

The object relations of bulimic women in context: an integration of two studies.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate and contextualize the object relations of bulimic women. Two independent studies, one quantitative and one qualitative, were conducted. In the quantitative study, 77 undergraduate women completed self-report measures of eating behavior, interpersonal dependency, and object relations. In the qualitative study, four bulimic women participated in semi-structured interviews that were coded for relational themes and contextualized through a feminist socio-cultural analysis. Results supported the strong association between dependency and eating disorders a

Interpersonal predictors of group therapy outcome for complicated grief.

This study investigated three aspects of patients' interpersonal functioning as predictors of outcome for two forms of group psychotherapy for complicated grief. Patients presented with a variety of death losses and met criteria for complicated grief. The three aspects of interpersonal functioning were the patient's (1) attachment to the lost person, (2) quality of object relations (QOR), and (3) level of recent social role functioning. A more secure attachment to the lost person and better social role functioning were associated with more favorable outcome in both forms of therapy. In additio

Work stressors, Chinese coping strategies, and job performance in Greater China.

The aim of this research was to jointly test effects of work stressors and coping strategies on job performance among employees in the Greater China region. A self-administered survey was conducted to collect data from three major cities in the region, namely Beijing, Hong Kong, and Taipei (N = 380). Four important work stressors were assessed: heavy workload, organizational constraints, lack of work autonomy, and interpersonal conflict. We used a four-factor model of Chinese coping strategies composed of hobbies/relaxation, active action, seeking social support, and passive adaptation. Job pe

Ecological momentary assessment of stressful events and negative affect in bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Negative affect precedes binge eating and purging in bulimia nervosa (BN), but little is known about factors that precipitate negative affect in relation to these behaviors. We aimed to assess the temporal relation among stressful events, negative affect, and bulimic events in the natural environment using ecological momentary assessment. METHOD: A total of 133 women with current BN recorded their mood, eating behavior, and the occurrence of stressful events every day for 2 weeks. Multilevel structural equation mediation models evaluated the relations among Time 1 stress measures (

Interpersonal perceptions of depressed and borderline inpatients.

Distortions in interpersonal perceptions among patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) were explored to investigate the validity of object relations theories. Depressed patients with BPD were compared to patients with major depressive disorder (MD) without BPD. Subjects were 77 male and female inpatients (BPD = 55, MD = 22). The mean ages were 30.5 for BPD subjects and 36.3 for MD subjects. Perceptions of patients, relatives, and interviewers were compared on the following measures: Structural Analysis of Social Behavior, Perceived Criticism Scale, and Camberwell Family Interview.

Stress Mediates the Relationship Between Psychosocial Factors and Musculoskeletal Disorders in Nurses.

INTRODUCTION: Nurses are highly susceptible to musculoskeletal disorders, with psychosocial workplace factors contributing to increased risk. However, the underlying mechanisms of this association remain unclear. This study explores the mediating role of stress in the link between psychosocial factors and musculoskeletal disorders among nurses. METHOD: A survey was conducted with 155 nurses at an academic hospital in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, from December 2023 to February 2024. Data were gathered on psychosocial factors-including work demands, interpersonal relations and leadership, work-indivi

Longitudinal social-interpersonal functioning among higher-risk responders to acute-phase cognitive therapy for recurrent major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Social-interpersonal dysfunction increases disability in major depressive disorder (MDD). Here we clarified the durability of improvements in social-interpersonal functioning made during acute-phase cognitive therapy (CT), whether continuation CT (C-CT) or fluoxetine (FLX) further improved functioning, and relations of functioning with depressive symptoms and relapse/recurrence. METHOD: Adult outpatients (N=241) with recurrent MDD who responded to acute-phase CT with higher risk of relapse (due to unstable or partial remission) were randomized to 8 months of C-CT, FLX, or pill pla

[Paranoid delusions and homicides inside or outside the family].

Paranoia is a mental pathology which severely complicates interpersonal relationships. Its mechanisms and its delusional themes often mean that paranoid subjects have strained, or even violent relations inside and/or outside their family. These difficuIt relationships can sometimes even lead to serious assaults without causing death or more rarely result in homicides with frequent pre-incident indicators.

Obsessive-compulsive symptom profiles in individuals exposed to interpersonal versus noninterpersonal trauma.

Obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms have been associated with trauma exposure. Although no studies have specified relations between type of trauma and OC symptom presentations, this information may inform personalized care for this complex population. Thus, this study used profile analysis via multidimensional scaling to characterize typical OC symptom profiles in individuals exposed to interpersonal versus noninterpersonal traumas. Profiles were also correlated with self-reported disgust and mental contamination, which have been related to OC symptoms and interpersonal trauma in prior research
