BACKGROUND: Health research projects can be complex challenges for those who undertake them and include substantial work that is not, in itself, a part of the scientific discipline. This work relates to the ever-evolving requirements of legislation, administration, and secure IT facilities, and the tasks can prove to be a significant barrier for researchers with inadequate access to research infrastructure and resources. Additionally, inappropriately applied study designs or statistical methods may result in studies which add little value to their field, but these issues may be avoidable if th

In 2023, the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine Brain Injury Interdisciplinary Special Interest Group (ACRM BI-ISIG) Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Task Force published updated diagnostic criteria for mild TBI. These criteria were developed in collaboration with a panel of 32 subject matter experts in mild TBI using the Delphi method. The 2023 ACRM diagnostic criteria marked the first update since 1993, incorporating three decades of research advancements in our understanding of mild TBI. To facilitate the consistent use of the new diagnostic criteria, the ACRM BI-ISIG Mild TBI Ta

Health disclosure at work is complicated for people with invisible chronic conditions. Due to the lack of visible symptoms, invisible conditions affect the work life of people in ways that are not obvious to others. This study examines how people disclose and conceal their conditions in the workplace and opens the design space for this topic. In the first phase, we analyzed posts on two subreddit forums, r/migraine and r/fibromyalgia, and found a range of strategies that individuals use to disclose or conceal their conditions. In the second phase, we created five technological design concepts

INTRODUCTION: Prior research into endometriosis-related pain has focused on specific aspects of the pain experience such as cyclical pain, emotional aspects of pain and certain types of pain such as dysmenorrhea and dyspareunia. However, research has paid less attention to the diversity and complexity of women's pain experiences, which can lead to failure to recognise some symptoms as part of endometriosis and poor symptom management.
METHODS: We conducted qualitative semi-structured face-to-face interviews with 20 women in the United Kingdom recruited from an endometriosis self-help group wi

OBJECTIVE: Live kidney donation is generally viewed as a welcome treatment option for severe kidney disease. However, there is a disparity in the body of research on donor experiences and postdonation outcome, and lack of knowledge on long-term consequences described by the donors. This study was conducted to provide insight into donors' subjective meanings and interpretation of their experiences ∼10 years after donation.
DESIGN: Qualitative explorative in-depth interviews. The sampling strategy employed maximum variation. Setting Oslo University Hospital is the national centre for organ tran

INTRODUCTION: People with pulmonary fibrosis (PF) experience gaps in care, educational resources and self-management strategies throughout their journey. We sought to identify gaps in care and information, determine essential information, examine sources of information and assess preferred modes of delivery for patient education and self-management (PESM) resources and interventions.
METHODS: In this qualitative study, we conducted interviews with people with PF using predefined, literature-based categories ("staying well with PF", "keeping fit & strong with PF", "using oxygen therapy", sympt

Research aimed at identifying and evaluating approaches to homelessness has predominately focused on strategies for supporting tenancy sustainment. Fewer studies focus on strategies for enabling thriving following homelessness, and the perspectives of service providers and organisational leaders (SPOL) on this topic are rare. We conducted this study in the context of a community-based participatory research project in two cities in Ontario, Canada. This research was aimed at identifying the strengths and challenges of existing supports in enabling thriving following homelessness, followed by c

BACKGROUND: Acceptance of the role of the fallopian tube in 'ovarian' carcinogenesis and the detrimental sequelae of surgical menopause in premenopausal women following risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO) has resulted in risk-reducing early-salpingectomy with delayed oophorectomy (RRESDO) being proposed as an attractive alternative risk-reducing strategy in women who decline/delay oophorectomy. We present the results of a qualitative study evaluating the decision-making process among BRCA carriers considering prophylactic surgeries (RRSO/RRESDO) as part of the multicentre PROTECTOR tria

Within traditional drug and alcohol (D&A) treatment services, the majority of those accessing support are of white ethnicity, with only a small percentage of people from the British South Asian (BSA) and Muslim community engaging in treatment services. This paper aims to explore perceived barriers to accessing traditional D&A services within the British South Asian and Muslim communities, based on qualitative data from interviews with family members and a practitioner. Qualitative data were obtained via 11 semi-structured interviews involving a practitioner (n = 1), and family and friends (n =

INTRODUCTION: Medical teaching podcasts have continued to grow in popularity in recent years due to their accessibility as a passive learning tool. If targeted to the specific needs of a program, this educational tool may be a simple and effective means of bridging knowledge gaps for trainees.
METHODS: Eight focused outpatient pulmonology topics were identified by recent post-graduate survey data from the University of California, San Diego's Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine fellowship. For each topic, a concise interview was recorded between a fellow and local expert within the Division of

BACKGROUND: As part of the internal pilot of the EMPOWER trial investigating the second-line antiemetic therapies in severe emesis in pregnancy ( https://www.isrctn.com/ISRCTN16924692 ), a qualitative study of women's views was carried out, to improve our understanding of why women did, or did not, consent to participation in the trial. Interviews were also conducted with site research staff, to broaden our analysis and explore other factors affecting recruitment.
METHODS: The sample comprised women who accepted or declined trial participation (n=21) and site research staff (n=22). A structur

BACKGROUND: In primary healthcare, conversations between clinicians and parents about young children's overweight are key to providing support and initiating weight management. However, given the sensitivity of this topic, these conversations are difficult for both clinicians and parents and are sometimes delayed or avoided. To understand the emotional impact of these conversations, this study aims to shed light on parents' experiences following conversations with primary care nurses about their child's overweight.
METHODS: Participants were recruited through a childhood obesity randomized co

Although the association between child sexual abuse (CSA) and homelessness among women is well documented, few studies have investigated this topic from a feminist standpoint, examining the impact of sociocultural factors such as rape culture. Based on a qualitative life course approach, individual interviews were conducted with 21 women who experienced both CSA and homelessness. Participants were between 29 to 60 years old (M = 45 years of age). Analyses revealed that CSA disclosure experiences were characterized by victim-blaming and disbelief. Women's traumatic experiences were further aggr

We studied a group of patients with depression divided into subtypes of non-chronic major depression, chronic major depression, and pure dysthymia. The purpose of this study was to determine if clinical and family history factors separated these types of depression. We reviewed records from semi-structured clinical interviews and abstracted data regarding factors that might differentiate these three depressive subtypes. In general we found what might be predicted from the definitions of dysthymia versus major depression, that is, ratings for severity of depression were lower for dysthymic pati
