OBJECTIVE: Chemokines have a range of biologic activities, including regulation of leukocyte trafficking, modulation of hematopoietic cell proliferation, and adhesion to extracellular matrix molecules. Specifically, B-lymphocyte chemoattractant (BLC); BCA-1; CXCL13, SCYB13) and stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1, CXCL12, SCYB12) are chemotactic for human B cells, and their ligands CXCR4 and CXCR5 are differentially expressed on B cells, including malignant B cells. We investigated the expression of these chemokine/chemokine receptors in eyes with primary intraocular B-cell lymphoma (PIOL).

PURPOSE: To report a rare case of primary orbital natural killer (NK)/T-cell lymphoma without nasal lesions but with cerebrospinal fluid involvement.
OBSERVATIONS: A 73-year-old woman was referred to the uveitis clinic with suspected unilateral acute uveitis in her right eye and a right orbital tumor. Epstein-Barr virus DNA was detected in the aqueous humor in her right eye, and orbital biopsy revealed the presence of extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma (ENKTL), nasal type. Positron emission tomography showed significant 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose uptake in the right orbit, with no other signs of syste

PURPOSE: Primary vitreoretinal lymphoma is the most common intraocular lymphoproliferative disorder. We evaluated the diagnostic yield of pars plana vitrectomy, specifically using modern high cut rate dual-cycle cutters, on in vitro cell viability and diagnostic yield.
METHODS: Human Burkitt lymphoma cell line Namalwa at 2 x 10^5 cells/mL was aspirated by 25-gauge dual-blade guillotine-type vitrectomy at five speeds (500, 1,000, 4,000, 7,500, or 15,000 cuts per minute). Cell viability and diagnostic yield in each subtype group were determined using hemocytometry, viable cell count using Cell

Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) has rarely been associated with ocular manifestations. We report a case of bilateral ocular involvement by PTLD with histopathologic features of extranodal marginal zone (MALT) lymphoma in an 8-year-old boy following orthotopic heart transplantation. The anterior segment disease was treated successfully using a combination of intraocular and systemic injections of humanized anti-CD20 antibody (rituximab).

The aims of this study were to define the initial characteristics, natural history, and prognostic factors of patients with ophthalmologic and intraocular malignant lymphoma. All patients treated at the Institut Curie for lymphoma with ophthalmologic (orbit and/or adnexa) or intraocular involvement were retrospectively reviewed. A pathological review of all cases was performed according to the WHO classification. One hundred and forty-five patients were selected for the study. Pathological review showed 36% MALT type lymphoma, 22% lymphoplasmocytic lymphoma, and 15% diffuse large B-cell lympho

A case is presented of an intraocular T-cell lymphoma mimicking a ring melanoma of the iris and being the first manifestation of systemic disease. A 51-year-old woman was referred with an anterior uveitis, initially presenting as a granulomatous iritis. Nodules had developed in the circumference and the lesion now imitated a malignant melanoma of the iris, which was also the diagnosis from a biopsy specimen with routine staining. Clinical, haematological and serological examination revealed no other symptoms or signs. Lymphocytic markers applied to the biopsy specimen and to the enucleated eye

We report a case of T-cell lymphoma metastatic to the eye, with an accompanying review of the literature. A 78-year-old white male with bilateral vitritis was diagnosed with primary cutaneous peripheral T-cell lymphoma unspecified, via vitreous biopsy. The tumor was found to be clonally related to the prior cutaneous malignancy using cytology, immunophenotyping, and molecular analysis. The vast majority of primary intraocular lymphomas are malignant B-cells, whereas intraocular T-cell lymphomas are uncommon. This case demonstrates the utility of immunophenotyping and molecular analysis with mi

BACKGROUND: Vitreoretinal lymphomas are difficult to diagnose due to their insidious onset and inaccessible focal points. Natural killer/T-cell derived malignancies are rare as intraocular lymphomas and usually have a rapid progression and a poor prognosis. Therefore, it is essential to make a definite diagnosis, especially differentially with B-cell-derived lymphomas, which account for most cases of vitreoretinal lymphomas.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes a 55-year-old female reporting a 10-month history of painless decline in her vision of the right eye. Optical coherence tomo

We report a case of intraocular relapse of extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma with anterior chamber hypopyon and retinal infiltrates. A 55-year-old man developed fever, malaise, anorexia, and hepatosplenomegaly, and was diagnosed with NK/T-cell lymphoma by liver biopsy. He underwent 2 courses of SMILE (dexamethasone, methotrexate, ifosfamide, L-asparaginase, and etoposide) chemotherapy, followed by myeloablative peripheral blood stem cell transplantation, donated by his brother. Two months later, he developed high-grade fever, hepatosplenomegaly, and peritoneal lymphadenopathy, and the relapse with

IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a systemic fibro-inflammatory condition characterized by tumor-like lesions, dense lymphoplasmacytic infiltrates rich in IgG4-positive plasma cells, and often elevated serum IgG4 levels. Ocular involvement is common, typically affecting the lacrimal glands and extraocular muscles. However, intraocular manifestations such as uveitis and scleritis are less frequent. We report the case of a 66-year-old Japanese man presenting with bilateral uveitis, posterior scleritis, serous retinal detachment, and choroidal thickening, initially mimicking intraocular lymphoma.

This study reported 2 new patients and 16 historical cases with pathologically proven intraocular infiltration with adult T-cell leukemia and lymphoma (ATLL) to know the timing of intraocular infiltration in the disease course. The first case was a 67-year-old woman who developed bilateral vitreous opacity about half a year after the onset of acute type of ATLL that had been unresponsive to chemotherapy. She underwent vitrectomy combined with cataract surgery in both eyes. She had bilateral optic disc atrophy and localized retinal white infiltrates in both eyes. Cytological examination of vitr

Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-rearranged non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), which accounts for 2-7% of all lung cancer cases, may exhibit atypical metastatic patterns, including ocular involvement. Although rare, intraocular metastases can severely impact a patient's quality of life. While traditional treatments have primarily focused on local therapies, ALK tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have emerged as a promising systemic alternative. A review of the literature supports the efficacy of ALK TKIs in managing intraocular metastases of ALK-rearranged NSCLC, with outcomes paralleling thos

Diagnosis of intraocular lymphoma is difficult. Among the hurdles in the diagnosis are the variety of reactive inflammatory and ischemic changes among intraocular lymphoma patients. Thus, a novel diagnostic method is desired such that lymphoma cells can be distinguished by the signals intrinsic to the cells, not by those from the surrounding tissues with reactive changes. Raman spectroscopy is a technique that can detect intrinsic signals from each cell. Therefore, Raman spectroscopy is a good candidate for an intraocular evaluation technology that could contribute to improve the diagnosis of

PURPOSE: We aimed to describe the clinical and histologic findings in a few enucleation cases with intraocular lymphoma.
METHODS: Retrospective review of pathology files from a 22-year period identified cases with intraocular lymphoma among all enucleation specimens. Patient demographics, clinical findings, laboratory results, radiographic studies, and indication for enucleation were abstracted from electronic health records; slides were reviewed.
RESULTS: Four patients (three women and one man; age range, sixth through eighth decades of life) underwent enucleation with a final diagnosis of

BACKGROUND: Malignant lymphomas of the eye and its adnexal structures account for approximately 5-15% of extranodal lymphomas. According to anatomic and biological criteria, two large groups of lymphomas in and around the eye need to be distinguished: (1) primary lymphomas of intraocular structures and (2) primary lymphomas of ocular adnexa. Furthermore, there is a large spectrum of secondary manifestations of malignant lymphomas in ocular and periocular structures.
OBJECTIVE: This article gives a summary of the classification and molecular pathology of various intraocular and periocular lymp
