Effects of Depot Medroxyprogesterone Acetate, Copper Intrauterine Devices, and Levonorgestrel Implants on Early HIV Disease Progression.

Limited data exist on the effects of contraceptives on HIV disease progression. We studied the association between intramuscular injectable depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA-IM), the copper intrauterine device (IUD), and the levonorgestrel (LNG) implant on markers of HIV disease progression at the time of HIV detection and 3 months postdetection and time from detection to CD4 count <350 cells/mm3. Among women initiating antiretroviral therapy (ART), we studied the effect of contraceptive group on time from ART initiation to viral load (VL) <40 copies/mL. We included women 16-35 years ran

Serum lipid variations in women on copper intrauterine devices, triphasic oral contraceptives and monthly injectable contraceptives.

This is a longitudinal, prospective, comparative controlled study. Patient selection excluded smokers, overweighed, hypertensive, and aged greater than 34 years. 168 women were distributed by random list into four groups: A) fitted with inert IUD (control); B) with Nova T (Cu-IUD); C) received triphasic gestodene (OC); and D) monthly norethisterone enanthate 50 mg + estradiol valerate 5 mg (injectable). Serum lipid patterns were assessed at the beginning of contraceptive use and at 1, 6 and 12 months. The results of the Cu-IUD group did not show any difference with the control group. The OC gr

A randomized trial of the Gyne T 380 and Gyne T 380 Slimline Intrauterine Copper devices.

To facilitate manufacture and insertion of the Gyne T 380 IUD, design changes were instituted. Copper collars were seated flush at the ends of the horizontal crossbar of the device. A randomized study of the Gyne T 380 Slimline, the new design, was undertaken in comparison with the standard Gyne T 380. A total of 996 women were enrolled, with 698 Slimline insertions and 298 of the standard Gyne T. No statistically significant difference in ease of insertion or in performance was detected between the models. At one year, the pregnancy rate of each model was below 0.5 per 100 and the continuatio

Copper Intrauterine Device Migration Into Cesarean Scar Niches Without Complications: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Intrauterine devices (IUDs), both hormonal and nonhormonal, are widely used contraceptive methods, with approximately 20% of reproductive-aged women worldwide utilizing them. Although IUDs are generally considered safe and effective, complications such as displacement and migration can occur. We report a rare case of copper IUD migration into a cesarean section scar niche. CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with complaints of lower abdominal pain and abnormal vaginal bleeding. She had received a T-shaped copper IUD 2 years prior. Transva

A premenopausal woman with fragmentation of a nonexpired copper intrauterine device and concomitant presence of Actinomyces species.

Actinomyces spp. has been shown to form biofilms when exposed to copper, possibly enhancing its degradation. Fragmentation and migration of the copper coil on an intrauterine device (IUD) is rare, but the concomitant presence of Actinomyces spp. may increase its incidence. We present the first case of a fragmented copper IUD within its lifespan of 10 years, with documented Actinomyces genitourinary tract colonization in a premenopausal woman.

Ruptured ectopic pregnancy after hysterectomy with copper intrauterine device in place: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Ectopic pregnancy after hysterectomy is a rare event, with 72 cases being reported since 1895. Concomitant use of reliable contraception at the time of hysterectomy makes pregnancy extremely unlikely, but, as this case illustrates, does not completely rule out the possibility of post-hysterectomy ectopic pregnancy. CASE: A 30-year-old woman experienced a ruptured fallopian tube ectopic pregnancy four weeks after a laparoscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy and left salpingo-oophorectomy. At the time of her hysterectomy, a copper intrauterine device was in place. CONCLUSION: Wom

Timing of copper intrauterine device insertion after medical abortion: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: To compare intrauterine device (IUD) use at 6 months in women randomized to receive an intrauterine copper contraceptive 1 week compared with 1 month after medical abortion. METHODS: We recruited women undergoing medical abortion with mifepristone and misoprostol and choosing the copper IUD for contraception. We randomly assigned participants to "immediate" insertion 1 week after mifepristone or "delayed" insertion 4-6 weeks later. We followed rates of IUD insertion, 6-month utilization, expulsion, removal, and pregnancy. Participants recorded bleeding in a diary for 4 weeks. RESU

Differential regulation of endometrial receptivity markers by levonorgestrel-releasing and copper intrauterine devices: A cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: Copper and levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine devices (IUDs) primarily prevent pregnancy through pre-fertilization mechanisms; however, their potential effects on endometrial receptivity remain incompletely understood. This study aimed to compare the regulation of selected adhesive and anti-adhesive endometrial receptivity markers in women using copper and levonorgestrel-releasing IUDs. METHODS: Observational cross-sectional study was conducted at a tertiary referral center between November 2025 and January 2026. Endometrial samples were obtained from women undergoing elective I

The incidence of actinomyces-like organisms in Papanicolaou-stained smears of copper- and levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine devices.

Actinomyces-like organisms (ALOs) are a common finding in Papanicolaou-stained cervico-vaginal smears (PAP smears) of women using an intrauterine device (IUD). The incidence of ALOs positive PAP smears depends on the type of IUD. Pelvic actinomycosis is a severe disease that may require hysterectomy and salpingo-oophorectomy. In a retrospective study we compared the incidence of ALOs positive PAP smears in users of the new levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine device (LNG-IUD) (n = 52) with the incidence in Multiload Copper IUD (ML375) users (n = 104). All IUDs had been inserted from 1996-1998

Menstrual bleeding pattern and iron status in women fitted with copper and non-medicated intrauterine contraceptive devices.

A prospective study of the menstrual bleeding pattern and iron status was conducted in 42 healthy Nigerian women volunteers before and after being fitted with either a medicated, copper T (TCu.200B) (n = 20) or a non-medicated, Lippes loop (n = 22) intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD). After about six months of use, the mean fasting serum iron and packed cell volume (PCV) were significantly higher (+32% and +6% respectively), mean serum ferritin was significantly decreased (-14%) compared to the pre-insertion levels in the copper T IUD users. In the Lippes loop IUD users, mean fasting serum
