Glycoprotein hormones are formed by the heterodimerization of alpha and beta subunits. In vertebrates, there are five glycoprotein hormones, four of which have a common alpha subunit (GPA1) bound to a specific beta subunit (GPB1, GPB2, GPB3, or GPB4), and the fifth, thyrostimulin, is formed by the dimerization of GPA2 and GPB5 subunits. These hormones mediate physiological events such as development, metabolism, and reproduction, although the functional role of thyrostimulin in vertebrates has not been fully elucidated. Recent reports in invertebrates, specifically in holometabolous insects, s

Sex differences in behavior-both sex-specific and shared behaviors-are fundamental to nearly all animal species. One often overlooked mechanism by which these behavioral differences can be generated is through sex-specific modulation of shared circuitry (i.e., circuits present in both sexes). In vertebrates this modulation is likely regulated by hormone-dependent mechanisms as well as by somatic sex itself; invertebrate models have particular promise for understanding the latter of these. Here we review molecular and behavioral evidence of sexual modulation of shared circuitry in the nematode

The mosquito Anopheles gambiae is an important vector for malaria, which is one of the most serious human parasitic diseases in the world, causing up to 2.7 million deaths yearly. To contribute to our understanding of A. gambiae and to the transmission of malaria, we have now cloned four evolutionarily related G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) from this mosquito and expressed them in Chinese hamster ovary cells. After screening of a library of thirty-three insect or other invertebrate neuropeptides and eight biogenic amines, we could identify (de-orphanize) three of these GPCRs as: an adipok

The Transient Receptor Potential superfamily of proteins (TRPs) form cation channels that are abundant in animal sensory systems. Amongst TRPs, the Melastatin-related subfamily (TRPMs) is composed of members that respond to temperature, pH, sex hormones, and various other stimuli. Some TRPMs exhibit enriched expression in gonads of vertebrate and invertebrate species, but their contributions to germline development remain to be determined. We identified twenty-one potential TRPMs in the planarian flatworm Schmidtea mediterranea and analyzed their anatomical distribution of expression by whole-

Ames dwarf mice and Snell dwarf mice lack growth hormone (GH), prolactin (PRL), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), live much longer than their normal siblings, and exhibit many symptoms of delayed aging. "Laron dwarf mice," produced by targeted disruption of the GH receptor/GH-binding protein gene (GHR-KO mice), are GH resistant and also live much longer than normal animals from the same line. Isolated GH deficiency in "little" mice is similarly associated with increased life span, provided that obesity is prevented by reducing fat content in the diet. Long-lived dwarf mice share many phen

The neuropeptide red pigment concentrating hormone (RPCH), which we have previously shown to activate the cardiac sac motor pattern and lead to a conjoint gastric mill-cardiac sac pattern in the spiny lobster Panulirus, also activates and modulates the pyloric pattern. Like the activity of gastric mill neurons in RPCH, the pattern of activity in the pyloric neurons is considerably more complex than that seen in control saline. This reflects the influence of the cardiac sac motor pattern, and particularly the upstream inferior ventricular (IV) neurons, on many of the pyloric neurons. RPCH inten

A radioimmunoassay was developed for insect tachykinin-related peptides with the use of an antiserum raised to the locust neuropeptide locustatachykinin I (LomTK I). Determination of tachykinin-related peptide was performed in different tissues of the cockroach Leucophaea maderae. The largest amounts of LomTK-like immunoreactivity (LomTK-LI) reside in the brain and in the midgut. Relatively large amounts were also found in the suboesophageal ganglion and throughout the ganglia of the ventral nerve cord, whereas smaller amounts of LomTK-LI were detected in the corpora cardiaca, foregut and hind

Sea star factor (SSF), a protein of 39,000 Da isolated from the coelomocytes of Asterias forbesi, was found to inhibit the induction of Ia expression on murine macrophages by concanavalin A supernatants. Addition of SSF to cultured macrophages at the same time as the lymphokine preparation significantly reduced the percentage Ia+ cells after 5 days culture, compared to cultures given lymphokine only. Intraperitoneal injection of SSF also reduced the percentage Ia+ peritoneal exudate macrophages by three-fourths in Listeria-infected mice. Addition of the cyclo-oxygenase inhibitor, indomethacin,

Besides its presence in the pineal gland, melatonin has been found in a variety of other tissues as well. The indoleamine also has been identified in invertebrates including an unicellular organism where it exhibits a diurnal rhythm. Although melatonin is mainly known for its effects on seasonal reproduction and endocrine physiology, there is evidence showing that this ubiquitously acting hormone is also a potent free radical scavenger, thereby providing protection from oxidative attack to DNA and other biomolecules. Through the years, melatonin was thought to be exclusively cytosolic. However

Sea stars are a group of marine invertebrates suitable for studying the hormonal regulation of reproduction and spawning. In spite of substantial progress in understanding how various substances such as 1-methyladenine act in their gonads, there are still many gaps concerning the fine details of their action. One such gap is how the gonadal wall contraction is induced. Recent literature data suggest that, upon 1-methyladenine stimulation, some cells within the gonadal lumen produce non-neuronal acetylcholine that, upon contact with the gonadal wall, induces contraction of myoepithelial cells.

Blood-sucking organisms produce various anticoagulant proteins that prevent blood clotting in their prey. Even in well-studied species like Hirudo medicinalis, many such proteins remain unidentified. We previously described a novel cysteine-rich anticoagulant (CRA), a distant homolog of antistasin. Later, we discovered another, much larger homolog in the medicinal leech. Its amino acid sequence is also highly cysteine-rich. Analysis of cysteine patterns showed four antistasin-like domain motifs, with one of them strongly disrupted. Since both antistasin and CRA contain two such domains, the ne

Prepatent and patent adult Hymenolepis diminuta from the intestines of rats, H. diminuta eggs recovered from the faeces of rats harbouring patent infections, and infective cysticercoids from the beetle intermediate host were analysed for free and conjugated ecdysteroids. Adult worms and eggs contained both free ecdysteroids and hydrolysable polar conjugated ecdysteroids, with comparatively large amounts of immunoreactive material also being detected following hydrolysis of the possible apolar conjugated ecdysteroid fraction. Free ecdysteroids were not detected in the cysticercoid sample. The c

Synthetic phenolic antioxidants (SPAs) are the most widely used antioxidants in the world. There is a growing concern due to their potential toxic effects and high pollution levels in aquatic environments. Existing studies have confirmed the neurotoxic, immunotoxic, and developmental toxicity of SPAs on aquatic organisms. However, there is limited research on the reproductive toxicity of SPAs, particularly in aquatic invertebrates. In this study, female Ruditapes philippinarum were selected as research objects to investigate the reproductive toxicity effects of typical SPAs 2,6-di-tert-butyl h

The endostyle is a pharyngeal organ with an opening groove and cilia in invertebrate chordates (amphioxus and ascidian) and cyclostomate (lamprey), serving as a filter-feeding tract and thyroid-secreting location. Emerging evidence implies its complex cellular composition and potentially versatile functions. Multiple cell types in the endostyle have been thought to be progenitors of complex organs in advanced vertebrates. To describe the expression profile and the potential functions, bulk RNA sequencing on the endostyle in ascidian Styela clava was conducted and distinct markers were selected

The term "endocrine disrupting chemicals" is commonly used to describe environmental agents that alter the endocrine system. Laboratories working in this emerging field-environmental endocrine research-have looked at chemicals that mimic or block endogenous vertebrate steroid hormones by interacting with the hormone's receptor. Environmental chemicals known to do this do so most often with receptors derived from the steroid/thyroid/retinoid gene family. They include ubiquitous and persistent organochlorines, as well as plasticizers, pharmaceuticals, and natural hormones. These chemicals functi

Proteins are essential biomolecules that perform critical roles in various biological processes, such as building and repairing tissues, transporting substances, signaling hormones, and providing protection. Traditional methods of meeting human protein needs, primarily through animal farming, have significant negative impacts on the environment. In many low-income countries, protein requirements often go unmet due to the high costs associated with animal farming. Additionally, the rise in food allergies has become a serious health concern, highlighting the need for alternative protein sources

Rapid cold hardening (RCH) is a short-term hormesis that occurs in many invertebrate species, especially in insects. Although RCH is best known as enhancing cold tolerance, it can also enhance anoxic tolerance. When exposed to prolonged anoxia, insects enter a reversible coma, which is associated with spreading depolarization (SD) in the central nervous system (CNS). In this study, we investigated the effects of RCH and octopamine (OA) on anoxia-induced SD in L. migratoria. OA is an insect stress hormone that has roles in many physiological processes. Thus, we hypothesized that OA is involved

To further understand the function of morphogenetic hormones in honeybee eye differentiation, the alterations in ommatidial patterning induced by pyriproxyfen, a juvenile hormone (JH) analogue, were studied by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Prepupae of prospective honeybee workers were treated with pyriproxyfen and the effects on ommatidial differentiation were described at the end of the pupal development. The results show that the entire ommatidia, i.e., the dioptric as well as the receptor systems, were affected by the JH analogue. The wave of ommatidial differentiation, whi

This paper investigates the distribution of four classes of neuropeptides, myomodulin, small cardioactive peptide (SCP), buccalin, and FMRFamide, in central neurons forming the network that underlies feeding behavior in the snail Lymnaea stagnalis. Intracellular dye-marking and immunocytochemical analysis, using antisera to the different classes of peptides, were applied to identified neurons of all three levels of the hierarchy of the circuitry: modulatory interneurons (cerebral giant cells, CGC; slow oscillator, SO), central pattern generator (CPG) interneurons (N1, N2, N3), motoneurons (B1-

Knowledge of the neuroendocrine system possibly improves the reproductive performance of captivated crustacean broodstock in aquaculture and it may substitute eyestalk ablation. In this study, we explored the luteinizing hormone (LH)-like molecule and proved the existence of the LH receptor (PpelLHR)-like mRNA in the blue swimming crab, Portunus pelagicus. Using the anti-human LH-β antibody, the immunoreactivities were found in the central nervous system (CNS) and ovary of the crab with the strongest signal in the mature ovary. The full-length PpelLHR-like mRNA sequence contained 4818 bp with
