BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to look for any possible associations in 58 consecutive cases of Fuchs heterochromic iridocyclitis (FHI) in a South Indian patient population. Fifty-eight consecutive cases (59 eyes) of FHI underwent a detailed ocular and systemic evaluation. INTRODUCTION: Iridocyclitis associated with retinitis pigmentosa is rarely described in the medical literature. We report an unusual case of this association.
OBSERVATION: A 55-year-old woman with a history of Behçet's disease presented with acute red and painful eyes and moderately blurred vision. Ophthalmologic examination concluded in bilateral acute hypertensive uveitis. Funduscopy and fundus fluorescein angiogram showed retinitis pigmentosa. The same fundus changes were found in the patient's siblings. Recurrences were frequent and topical steroids were always successful.

AIMS: To determine whether macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) levels were increased in sera of the patients with iridocyclitis.
METHODS: Sera were obtained from 41 patients with acute iridocyclitis, 13 patients with chronic iridocyclitis, and 44 healthy control subjects. MIF levels were determined by a human MIF ELISA.
RESULTS: The average levels of MIF in the sera of patients with both acute and chronic iridocyclitis were significantly higher than that of healthy subjects.

PURPOSE: We aimed to discuss the possible role of developmental embryologic factors in neural crest cells in the aetiology of keratoconus and Fuchs' heterochromic iridocyclitis by presenting this case.
CASE REPORT: We diagnosed bilateral keratoconus and unilateral Fuchs' heterochromic iridocyclitis in a 19 year old women complaining of progressively blurring vision in her left eye. We also examined most of her first and second degree relatives. One niece had FHI in addition to a choroidal nevus in the inferior temporal quadrant of her left eye.

In the present study we have reconfirmed an earlier observation of the association of iridocyclitis with limited joint involvement in children with JRA. Children who develop iridocyclitis are predominantly girls whose sera are positive for antinuclear antibodies. Iridocyclitis was found to be asymptomatic at onset. A 51-year-old man presented with acute iridocyclitis with no evidence of vitritis on B-scan that progressed to endogenous endophthalmitis. Systemic work-up revealed a large liver abscess. Urine, blood, liver abscess, and vitreous aspirate cultures all grew Klebsiella pneumoniae. The eye was enucleated secondary to severe pain from neovascular glaucoma and loss of vision.

BACKGROUND: Fuchs heterochromic iridocyclitis is a chronic, unilateral iridocyclitis characterized by iris heterochromia. The gradual progression of the disease leads to the development of cataracts, glaucoma, and, occasionally, vitreous infiltration. The trigger for inflammation of the iris and ciliary body is still unknown. There are several as yet unconfirmed theories about the mechanism of occurrence, including Toxoplasma gondii infection, immune dysfunction, infiltration of sensitized lymphocytes, and chronic herpes virus infection.
