Iron deficiency is a frequent complication in chronically ill patients and in pregnant women. Iron status can now be characterised precisely and relatively easily by determining serum ferritin, transferritin saturation and if necessary hypochromic erythrocytes and the haemoglobin content of erythrocytes (CHr). Oral iron replacement is usually restricted by limited absorption and low tolerability. Intravenous iron therapy is possible in such cases and can be combined with rHuEPO (e.g. EPREX/Epoetin alfa) in severe cases. Iron saccharate Switzerland and this permits high dose iron replacement wi

Iron deficiency is the most frequently encountered cause of suboptimal response to recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO). Carefully assessing iron status is of paramount importance in chronic renal failure patients prior to or during rHuEPO therapy. Because there is great need for iron in the EPO-stimulated erythroid progenitors, it is essential that serum ferritin and transferrin saturation levels should be maintained over 300 microg/liter and 30%, respectively. Investigators have shown that oral iron is unlikely to keep pace with the iron demand for an optimal rHuEPO response in uremics.

The growth of plague bacteria may be limited by the level of iron concentration in the nutrient medium. The virulent strains of the plague microbe possess the more pronounced mechanism of iron assimilation as compared to the vaccine strain. The iron ions are extracted by the virulent and vaccine strains only under the cell surface contact with the iron-saturated transferrin. The iron-sorbing function is peculiar to the plague microbe cell walls which is pronounced more strongly in the virulent strains.

BACKGROUND: Previous trials of prenatal iron supplementation had limited measures of maternal or neonatal iron status.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose was to assess effects of prenatal iron-folate supplementation on maternal and neonatal iron status.
METHODS: Enrollment occurred June 2009 through December 2011 in Hebei, China. Women with uncomplicated singleton pregnancies at ≤20 wk gestation, aged ≥18 y, and with hemoglobin ≥100 g/L were randomly assigned 1:1 to receive daily iron (300 mg ferrous sulfate) or placebo + 0.40 mg folate from enrollment to birth. Iron status was assessed in maternal veno

Due to high iron requirements, young children are at risk for iron deficiency anemia. Iron supplements are therefore often recommended, especially since iron deficiency anemia in children is associated with poor neurodevelopment. However, in contrast to most other nutrients, excess iron cannot be excreted by the human body and it has recently been suggested that excessive iron supplementation of young children may have adverse effects on growth, risk of infections, and even on cognitive development. Recent studies support that iron supplements are beneficial in iron-deficient children but ther

MAIN DISORDERS OF IRON METABOLISM: Increased iron requirements, limited external supply, and increased blood loss may lead to iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anaemia. In chronic inflammation, the excess of hepcidin decreases iron absorption and prevents iron recycling, resulting in hypoferraemia and iron restricted erythropoiesis, despite normal iron stores (functional iron deficiency), and finally anaemia of chronic disease (ACD), which can evolve to ACD plus true ID (ACD+ID). In contrast, low hepcidin expression may lead to hereditary haemochromatosis (HH type I, mutations of the HF

OBJECTIVE: Iron deficiency (ID) is the most common nutritional deficiency, and iron metabolism becomes further deteriorated in the presence of certain conditions, such as heart failure (HF). Atrial fibrillation (AF) has many similarities to HF, including a chronic inflammatory pathophysiology; however, the prevalence of ID and other hematinic deficiencies in AF patients have not been determined.
METHODS: In this study, the prevalence of iron (serum ferritin <100 µg/L or ferritin 100-299 µg/L with transferrin saturation <20%), vitamin B12 (<200 pg/mL), and folate deficiency (<4.0 ng/mL) was ev

INTRODUCTION: The use of oral iron in iron deficiency (ID) and ID anemia (IDA) in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is controversial. Its lower cost and ease of administration must be weighed against side effects and efficacy. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and tolerability of two oral iron formulations (Sucrosomial® iron [SI] and ferric hydroxide-polymaltose complex [FHPC] for correcting ID and IDA in IBD. As a secondary objective, we aimed to assess the impact of oral iron on correcting ID, IDA, and disability in IBD.
METHODS: This was a prospective, observational, bicentr

Iron deficiency is the most common medical condition encountered during pregnancy and remains substantially underdiagnosed when screening relies on hemoglobin alone. Even in high-income countries such as Canada, iron deficiency affects most pregnant women. Iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia are associated with increased maternal, perinatal, and neonatal morbidity and mortality, including adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. This narrative review summarizes the epidemiology, physiology, clinical consequences, screening strategies, and management of iron deficiency in pregnancy, with a f

Iron is an essential micronutrient for fetal and postnatal neurodevelopment because of its role in critical neurologic processes, including myelination, monoamine neurotransmitter metabolism, neuronal adenosine triphosphate generation and structural development, and epigenetic modification of synaptic plasticity genes and networks. All these processes begin in the fetal stage and are at risk when the fetus is iron-deficient. Pregnancy places a tremendous negative strain on maternal iron status because of the expansion of her blood volume, coupled with placental and fetal iron demand. Fetal iro

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanism between vitamin A deficiency and anemia.
METHODS: In this study, we performed animal and in vitro experiments to investigate the effect of vitamin A deficiency on iron regulator protein-2 (IRP2). In animal experiments, four parallel groups of rats were fed a control diet, a diet completely deficient in vitamin A, a diet marginally deficiency in vitamin A, and a diet marginally deficient in iron and vitamin A, respectively, for 8 wk. In the in vitro experiments, the primary hepatocytes were acquired from the livers of vitamin A-

A method is presented to estimate a cutoff for hemoglobin concentration appropriate for estimating the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia in poor Jamaican girls 13-14 y of age. Iron deficiency was determined from a three-variable model of iron status (serum ferritin, erythrocyte protoporphyrin, and mean corpuscular volume). The most appropriate hemoglobin cutoff was considered the one that minimized misclassification of iron deficiency: that yielding the maximum kappa coefficient for correctly classifying iron deficiency between 100 and 120 g/L, at 1-g/L intervals. By using this method, a he

Of the various red cell parameters used for distinguishing iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) from beta-thalassaemia trait BTT, red cell distribution width (RDW), which is an objective measure of the degree of anisocytosis, was examined by us for its discriminating value. RDW was measured in 55 patients of IDA and 56 patients of BTT at presentation with the help of an automated haematology analyser. The mean RDWs in IDA and BTT patients were 18.2 +/- 3.8 and 15.1 +/- 1.2 respectively (P < 0.001). In IDA, RDW showed an inverse relationship with the haemoglobin level (r = -0.543; P < 0.001), while no

Iron deficiency anemia in children is a public health problem. Although oral iron treatment is the first choice, common side effects and compliance problems can cause the treatment to be interrupted. This study retrospectively evaluated children treated with intravenous (IV) iron sucrose or ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) and compared the treatment processes and efficacy. The demographic characteristics and treatment details of the 44 children with iron deficiency anemia were retrospectively evaluated. Iron sucrose was administered to 25 patients and FCM was administered to 19 patients. The IV iro

The body does not possess an active export system for iron. Therefore, the amount of iron uptake is usually small; iron metabolism in the body should be considered a "semi-closed system." However, iron needed for erythropoiesis can be lacking in the case of continuous bleeding, and thus, iron deficiency anemia (IDA) would occur. IDA is the most common form of anemia; approximately 70% of anemia is IDA. Therefore, upper and lower endoscopies or gynecological procedures should be used to treat bleeding sites; in addition, the small intestine can now be widely observed and treated by double-ballo

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most common nutritional deficiency in children. Most children with IDA are treated with oral iron preparations. However, intravenous (IV) iron is an alternative for children with severe IDA who have difficulty in adhering to or absorbing oral iron. We sought to describe the safety and effectiveness of IV iron sucrose for treatment of IDA in children. Pharmacy records of children who received IV iron sucrose at a children's hospital between 2004 and 2014 were reviewed. Laboratory markers of anemia and iron studies were obtained and preinfusion and postinfusio

Like most essential nutrients, Fe needs to be maintained in the body at a defined level for optimal health, with appropriate adaptation to varying Fe needs and supply. The primary mechanism for controlling Fe level is the regulation of Fe absorption. Several different proteins have been identified as contributors to the process. Despite a complex regulatory system, Fe disorders (both Fe deficiency and Fe overload) occur. Fe deficiency is a common problem worldwide, resulting from inadequate dietary Fe and blood loss. Complications include pre-term labour, developmental delay, and impaired work

Iron supplementation, mostly with a therapeutic orientation, has been a key strategy for the short-term control of iron deficiency and ferropenic anemia. It has been used almost exclusively in antenatal clinics, but in spite of its confirmed efficacy in supervised trials, it has proven ineffective in practice in most developing countries. Poor effectiveness has been attributed to various factors including insufficient dose and time of supplementation and poor adherence. These problems have led to the administration of high iron doses, which have proven equally ineffective in practice. This pap
