This study examined whether a knee flexor isometric contraction at 20% of maximal voluntary isometric contraction until exhaustion would alter the biceps femoris long head (BFlh) and semitendinosus (ST) active stiffness, assessed using ultrasound-based shear wave elastography. Twelve healthy individuals participated in 2 sessions separated by 7 days. Time to exhaustion was similar in both sessions (day 1: 443.8 ± 192.5 s; day 2: 474.6 ± 131.7 s; p = 0.323). At the start of the fatigue task, the ST showed greater active stiffness than the BFlh (p < 0.001), with no differences between days (p =

Spindle Ia afferents may be differentially involved in voluntary isometric contraction, depending on the pattern of synaptic connections in spindle reflex pathways. We investigated how isometric contraction of masseter muscles is regulated through the activity of their muscle spindles that contain the largest number of intrafusal fibers among skeletal muscle spindles by examining the effects of vibration of muscle spindles on the voluntary isometric contraction. Subjects were instructed to hold the jaw at resting position by counteracting ramp loads applied on lower molar teeth. In response to

The purpose of this study was to compare the discharge characteristics of motor units in the first dorsal interosseous (FDI) muscle when it performed low-force isometric contractions in the directions of index finger abduction, flexion, or concurrent abduction + flexion (combined). Motor-unit activity was identified from high-density surface electromyography (HD-sEMG) recordings obtained with grid electrodes attached to the skin over FDI while participants performed low-force isometric contractions at 10% of maximum in the three directions. A total of 378 motor units were identified across all

The complexity of knee extensor torque time series decreases during fatiguing isometric muscle contractions. We hypothesized that because of peripheral fatigue, this loss of torque complexity would occur exclusively during contractions above the critical torque (CT). Nine healthy participants performed isometric knee extension exercise (6 s of contraction, 4 s of rest) on six occasions for 30 min or to task failure, whichever occurred sooner. Four trials were performed above CT (trials S1-S4, S1 being the lowest intensity), and two were performed below CT (at 50% and 90% of CT). Global, centra

Although it is well known that foam rolling (FR) of the lower extremities can increase the range of motion (ROM) of a joint while likely having no detrimental effect on muscle performance, to date, this is not clear if this is the case for the upper body. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of a 2-min FR intervention of the pectoralis major (PMa) muscle on muscle stiffness of the PMa, shoulder extension ROM, and maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) peak torque. Thirty-eight (n = 15 females) healthy, physically active participants were randomly assigned to

BACKGROUND: Whole body vibration (WBV) training improves maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) of knee extensors, postural balance, functional capacity, and quality of life (QOL) in several diseases. The objective was to assess the efficacy of WBV training in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on hemodialysis (HD) in the interdialytic period.
METHOD: A randomized, controlled trial study with concealed allocation, intention-to-treat analysis, and triple blinding. Sixteen patients with CKD of both genders aged over 40 years were allocated in two groups, the WBV group or the sha

This study investigated neuromuscular variations across low to moderate target force levels, three knee joint angles and tibial rotation positions, examining their correlations with muscle morphology and their collective impact on force steadiness (FS). Twelve young adult males performed knee extension tasks under three different tibial rotation conditions: internal rotation (IR), neutral rotation (NR), and external rotation (ER). All tasks involved submaximal isometric contractions at the knee joint. Participants performed submaximal isometric contractions at three knee joint angles (30°, 60°

OBJECTIVE: Recently, the DC/TMD has become an essential tool for the diagnosis of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). However, as they fail to include functional activities, new assessment proposals have emerged, such as the isometric contraction test (IC test) of the masticatory muscles, which uses muscle contractions to identify muscular TMD. This study aimed to determine the test-retest reliability of the IC test.
METHODS: A total of 64 participants (40 women and 24 men) completed the IC test administered by two different physical therapists on two non-consecutive days. Cohen's kappa (k), P

PURPOSE: Controversy remains about whether exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) and the subsequent repeated bout effect (RBE) are caused by the stretching of an activated muscle, or the production of high force at long, but constant, muscle lengths. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of muscle fascicle stretch elicited during different muscle contraction types on the magnitude of EIMD and the RBE.
METHODS: Fourteen participants performed an initial bout of lower limb exercise of the triceps surae. One leg performed sustained static contractions at a constant long muscle len

Muscle damage after 30 maximal eccentric contractions of the elbow flexors (30MVEC) is reduced when the same exercise is performed by the opposite arm, and when two maximal voluntary isometric contractions at a long muscle length (2MVIC) are performed prior to 30MVEC by the same arm. This study investigated the hypothesis that 2MVIC would attenuate muscle damage after 30MVEC performed by the opposite arm. Untrained young (20-25 years) men were placed into 1 of 4 experimental groups that performed 2MVIC at 1 (1d), 2 (2d), 4 (4d), or 7 days (7d) before 30MVEC by the opposite arm, or one control

The effects of isometric contractions and passive stretching on muscle-tendon mechanics and muscle activity were studied in 16 healthy human volunteers. First, peak concentric and passive ankle joint moment data were recorded on an isokinetic dynamometer with electromyographic monitoring of the triceps surae; real-time motion analysis of the lower leg and ultrasound imaging of the Achilles-medial gastrocnemius muscle-tendon junction were simultaneously conducted. Second, the subjects performed six 8-s maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVICs) before repeating the passive and active tria

OBJECTIVE: In medicine and sports science, 'acute' denotes short-term or single-session effects, whereas 'non-acute' pertains to long-term, sustained training outcomes. Hypertensive patients need to exercise with caution, especially during isometric exercises, as such exercises may cause a sharp increase in blood pressure. However, long-term non-acute training may bring antihypertensive effects through mechanisms such as improving vascular function and reducing peripheral resistance, without causing acute risks. Therefore, long-term training may be safer than acute exercise. This article explo

The last code of point ruling international artistic gymnastic competitions took another step toward the necessity of strength difficulty on rings. The present study aims to analyze the relationship between bench press and iron cross maximal isometric contraction. 52 gymnasts (mean ± SD, 22.4 ± 5 years, 173 ± 5 cm, and 68.5 ± 6 kg) were randomly assigned to start by one of two exercises: (1) Maximal isometric contraction in the bench press position. The force applied by the athletes against an immobile bar was measured with handheld dynamometers. (2) Maximal contraction in the iron cross posit

Context. Maximal voluntary isometric contraction, a method quantitatively assessing muscle strength, has proven to be reliable, accurate and sensitive in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Hand-held dynamometry is less expensive and more quickly applicable than maximal voluntary isometric contraction. Objective. To investigate if hand-held dynamometry is as reliable and valid as maximal voluntary isometric contraction in measuring muscle strength in patients with an adult-onset, non-hereditary progressive lower motor neuron syndrome. Design. Two testers performed maximal voluntary isometric contra

Prolonged low-frequency force depression (PLFFD) is the disproportionate loss of force in response to low frequencies (e.g., <20 Hz) of activation compared to high frequencies (e.g., >50 Hz) following fatiguing contractions. While traditionally assessed using isometric contractions, the effect of PLFFD during dynamic contractions is much less explored. The purpose was to assess PLFFD at two loads (unloaded and 12.5% of maximal voluntary contraction) during dynamic isotonic and isometric contractions following a fatiguing task. Eighteen participants (23.3 ± 1.6 yr, 6 females) performed continuo

The purpose of our study was to determine the influence of load compliance on the discharge characteristics of the same motor units in the first dorsal interosseus (FDI) muscle during submaximal isometric contractions. Motor unit activity in FDI was recorded using high-density, surface electromyography while participants performed isometric contractions either by pushing against a rigid force transducer (force task) or supporting an equivalent inertial load (position task). The coefficient of variation for force decreased as the target force increased from 10% to 30% of maximal FDI force (inde

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed: (i) to investigate the impact of fatigue, triggered by maximal isometric contraction exercises, on the active and passive stiffness of plantar flexors (PF), and (ii) to examine the relationship between changes in mechanical parameters and neuromuscular alterations after fatigue.
METHODS: A healthy cohort (n = 12; age = 27.3 ± 5.5 y; BMI = 24.4 ± 2.35 kg/m²) was instructed to perform 60 isometric contractions, each lasting 4 s with a 1-s rest interval, using an ergometer. Several measures were taken before and after the fatigue protocol. First, the stiffness of the
