OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence of Isospora belli infection in HIV-infected patients in France, and to study risk factors.
METHODS: The French Hospital Database on HIV (FHDH) is a prospective cohort study that collects demographic, clinical and therapeutic data on patients managed in 62 hospitals. We reviewed all cases of I. belli infection recorded between 1992 and 2003. We compared the incidence in 1992-1994 [before the use of dual therapy and combination antiretroviral therapy (cART)] and in 1997-2003 (when use of cART was widespread), after stratification for CD4 cell count (< 50, 5

This study reports the prevalence of Cryptosporidium, Giardia and Isospora species in cats showing signs of gastrointestinal disease. Records from a United Kingdom commercial diagnostic laboratory between December 2003 and December 2005 were reviewed. Of 1355 cats, Cryptosporidium species oocysts were found in 13 cats (1%), Giardia species trophozoites in 74 (6%), and Isospora felis oocysts in 46 (3%). In a second group of 48 cats, prevalence of Giardia species was 15% using an immunoassay for detection of antigen compared to 4% detected with microscopy. Prevalence of Giardia (9%) and Isospora

72 patients with AIDS, having diarrhoea and admitted in the Unit of Infectious diseases, Fann Hospital from 1989 to 1991 were investigated for Cryptosporidium sp. and Isospora belli isolation by the modified Ziehl-Neelsen technique, after stolls' concentration by Ritchie technique. The prevalence were 13.9% for Cryptosporidium sp, and 15.3% for I. belli. In two patients (2.8%), these 2 coccidiae were associated. Cryptosporidium sp. and I. belli were the single parasites found respectively in 6 (8.3% and 7 (9.7%) of the patients. In the other faecal samples with a positive result for Cryptospor

Forty-nine pigs from 6 litters were inoculated at 3 days of age with 300,000 sporulated oocysts of Isospora suis to determine the effects of neonatal coccidiosis on morbidity, mortality, and weight gain in nursing pigs. Fifty-one control pigs from 6 litters were not inoculated. Three to 5 days after inoculation, the inoculated pigs developed a nonhemorrhagic diarrhea, generally lasting 6 to 10 days, that lead to visible dehydration, loss of condition, and 20.4% mortality. Control pigs did not die or develop coccidiosis during the 3-week study and had significantly (P less than 0.05) greater bo

The summer tanager, Piranga rubra (L., 1758) is a medium-sized songbird formerly belonging to the tanager family Thraupidae but now has been placed within the family Cardinalidae. Nothing is known about the coccidian parasites of this stunningly colorful bird. Feces from 2 P. rubra found dead in McCurtain County, Oklahoma were collected and examined for coccidia; 1 was found to be passing a new species of Isospora. Oocysts of Isospora mccurtainensis n. sp. are subspheroidal to ovoidal with a smooth bilayered wall, measure (length × width [L × W]) 21.7 × 19.5 μm, and have a L/W ratio of 1.1; a

House sparrows (Passer domesticus biblicus Hartert, 1904) caught in the Jordan valley, the coastal plain, and the desert region in Southern Israel were found massively infected with extraintestinal proliferative stages of Isospora, previously named Atoxoplasma. Infection coincided with Isospora spp. infections in the digestive tract. Prevalence of infection reached 70% among sparrows of all three regions; however, only in the Jordan valley did the severity of the sparrows compromised their survival. Healthy appearing captured birds showed symptoms of "going light" syndrome -- diarrhea, emaciat

BACKGROUND: The gnateaters Conopophaga spp. are insectivorous passerines commonly observed in high and humid forests, where they remain lodged in thin branches and, sometimes, they fly to the ground to catch insects. The insectivorous feeding habit is related to low prevalence and density of coccidians in passerines; however, several coccidian species are recorded for families of insectivorous passerines.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine the feces from gnateaters Conopophaga spp. captured in the municipality of Barra Mansa and in the Itatiaia National Park, State of Rio de Janeiro, Southe

Coprological analysis of a sample from one free-living hedgehog was done with the use of a direct flotation method with additional incubation of fecal material. The study revealed three types of eggs and oocysts in the feces. The most commonly diagnosed were oocysts of Isospora rastegaievae (543/3g), while oocysts of Monocystis sp. (267/3g) and eggs of Aonchotheca/Eucoleus spp. (52/3g) were seen less often. This is the first report of coccidia I. rastegaievae (Apicomplexa: Eimeriida) and acephaline gregarine Monocystis sp. (Apicomplexa: Eugregarinida) infection in a hedgehog in Poland.

The aim of the present study was to use small-subunit (SSU)-rRNA sequences of Isospora belli to design specific primer pairs and a hybridization probe for the detection of Isospora belli in human samples by PCR and Southern blot hybridization. PCR amplification with the primer pairs produced correct DNA fragments with target DNA from samples of Isospora belli-infected patients and from cloned SSU-rRNA of Isospora belli. The nature of the PCR products was confirmed by Southern blot hybridization. No amplification was seen with template DNA extracted from other parasites. Although Isospora belli

A new Coccidia species is reported from the natural population of Pied Flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) in northern Germany. Sporulated oocysts were found in faeces from 6 of 8 sampled adults. The spherical oocysts of the new Isospora species have a brownish, smooth, bi-layered wall. Average size of sporulated oocysts was 19.4 x 19.3 microm (17.5-22.8 microm x 17.5-22.8 microm ) with a shape index (length/width) of 1.0. The sporulated oocysts have no micropyle or residuum, but enclose several small polar granules that often cluster into 2-3 dumbbell-shaped formations. Sporocysts are slightly el

The aim of this study was to investigate the intra-litter infection dynamics of Isospora suis under natural conditions, and to study any association between parasite transmission and the contamination level of the farrowing pen by applying different interventions in order to reduce the transmission of I. suis infection within the litter. The study was divided in 2 trials including in total 22 litters (254 piglets). The first trial included 4 litters (where standard procedures practiced routinely on the farm piglets were applied) and the piglets were followed coprologically from farrowing until

Based on a review of species mortalities, systemic Isospora species was identified as the primary cause of death in 22% (19 of 87) of blue-crowned laughing thrushes (BCLTs; Garrulax courtoisi) at the Jersey Zoo between 1997 and 2016. Fifty-eight percent of the affected birds were between 1 and 2 years old, and in 89% of cases, death occurred between August and December. Abnormal clinical findings in BCLTs with Isospora species infections included hepatomegaly and pectoral muscle myositis in 79% of the cases. The results of diagnostic blood testing in 90% of infected BCLTs 30 days before death
