Microorganisms in Ixodes ricinus ticks in southern and southwestern Norway.

Tick-borne diseases constitute a major group of emerging vector-borne infections and represent a growing public health concern in many European countries. In Europe, the most clinically significant agents transmitted by Ixodes ricinus are tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) and Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, the causative agents of tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme borreliosis, respectively. Ixodes ricinus also serves as a vector for other pathogenic microorganisms, including louping-ill virus (LIV) and Anaplasma phagocytophilum. Various endosymbionts, such as Wolbachia pipientis and Midichl

First report of the taiga tick Ixodes persulcatus in Norway.

The distribution range of the taiga tick, Ixodes persulcatus, has increased in the last decade in Northern Europe. We performed samplings at nine locations in Nordland County, east and northeast of Brønnøysund, south of the Arctic Circle in July 2023. Four of 62 ticks collected were identified as I. persulcatus (one female, two males and one nymph), the remaining were identified as Ixodes ricinus (9 females, 2 males and 47 nymphs). This is the first report of I. persulcatus in Norway. Given the importance of I. persulcatus as vector of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and more pathogenic subtyp

Illustrated redescription of the male of Ixodes simplex Neumann, 1906.

Ixodes simplex is a tick species of bats, mainly reported from Schreibers' Bent-winged bat, Miniopterus schreibersii, all over its host's range. While being a common parasite of cave-dwelling bat species, the initial description of males is poor (based on a sole damaged specimen), lacking distinctive features. This study describes the male of I. simplex also providing measurements for a number of characters, using a series 10 of specimens. Males of I. simplex show the following characteristics distinct from males of I. ariadnae and I. vespertilionis: idiosoma is shorter (2.6 mm vs. 3.4-4.7 mm)

Deer density and the abundance of Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae).

The abundance of Ixodes scapularis Say (Ixodes dammini Spielman, Clifford, Piesman & Corwin), the vector tick of the Lyme disease spirochete and other human pathogens, is related to the presence of its primary reproductive stage host, white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus Zimmerman). However, this relationship has not been quantified in terms that would guide wildlife management in areas in which the public is, or is likely to become, exposed to infected ticks. In this study, deer density and tick abundance were measured in an emergent area for Lyme disease at three spatial scales using es

Evaluation of Vector Competence of Ixodes Ticks for Kemerovo Virus.

Tick-borne viruses are responsible for various symptoms in humans and animals, ranging from simple fever to neurological disorders or haemorrhagic fevers. The Kemerovo virus (KEMV) is a tick-borne orbivirus, and it has been suspected to be responsible for human encephalitis cases in Russia and central Europe. It has been isolated from Ixodes persulcatus and Ixodes ricinus ticks. In a previous study, we assessed the vector competence of I. ricinus larvae from Slovakia for KEMV, using an artificial feeding system. In the current study, we used the same system to infect different tick population/

Identification of microRNAs in the Lyme Disease Vector Ixodes scapularis.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of small non-coding RNAs involved in many biological processes, including the immune pathways that control bacterial, parasitic, and viral infections. Pathogens probably modify host miRNAs to facilitate successful infection, so they might be useful targets for vaccination strategies. There are few data on differentially expressed miRNAs in the black-legged tick Ixodes scapularis after infection with Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease in the United States. Small RNA sequencing and qRT-PCR analysis were used to identify and validate different

[Ixodic tick-borne borreliosis: clinical and laboratory features.].

For a differentiation of clinical forms of ixodic tick-borne borreliosis clinical laboratory assessment of features of the most often defined hemostasis and complete blood count (CBC) indicators is carried out. Ixodic tick-borne borreliosis in the territory of the Republic of Bashkortostan is characterized by mainly erythematous forms of a disease with a medium-weight current. At the same time some increase in quantity of platelets was noted that could be caused by irritation of a megakaryocytic sprout of bone marrow in the conditions of infectious process and have compensatory character where

Life cycle of Ixodes luciae (Acari: Ixodidae) in the laboratory.

The life cycle of Ixodes luciae was evaluated for five consecutive generations in the laboratory. Wild mice Calomys callosus and laboratory rats Rattus norvegicus were used as hosts for larvae and nymphs. For adult ticks, opossums Didelphis aurita were used as hosts. Off-host developmental periods were observed in an incubator at 27 degrees C and 95% RH. The life cycle of I. luciae lasted 95-97 days, excluding prefeeding periods. C. callosus, one of the natural host species for I. luciae immature stages, was shown to be much more suitable than the artificial host R. norvegicus. Significantly (

Insight into the sialome of the castor bean tick, Ixodes ricinus.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, there have been several sialome projects revealing transcripts expressed in the salivary glands of ticks, which are important vectors of several human diseases. Here, we focused on the sialome of the European vector of Lyme disease, Ixodes ricinus. RESULTS: In the attempt to describe expressed genes and their dynamics throughout the feeding period, we constructed cDNA libraries from four different feeding stages of Ixodes ricinus females: unfed, 24 hours after attachment, four (partially fed) and seven days (fully engorged) after attachment. Approximately 600 rand

Human toxicosis caused by the tick Ixodes redikorzevi in Israel.

The clinical symptoms of a tick toxicosis caused by Ixodes redikorzevi in northern Israel are described. The patient was a nine-year-old Arab boy from an agricultural village who was admitted to a local hospital and had been suffering for 4 days from fever and torticollis. A partially engorged female tick was removed from the nuchal area of the scalp, and the symptoms disappeared within 2 hours. Morphometrical measurements indicated that the tick was attached to the skin for 3-4 days.

Powassan virus in Ixodes cookei and Mustelidae in New England.

Powassan virus was recovered from a pool of 3 nymphal and 1 adult female Ixodes cookei removed from a striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis) trapped in Massachusetts during 1967 and from a pool of 9 nymphal I. cookei from a long-tailed weasel (Mustela frenata) captured in Connecticut during 1978. Virus was detected in the blood of both mammals. Hemagglutination-inhibiting (HI) antibody to Powassan virus was demonstrated in 16.0% of the skunks sampled in Connecticut, and neutralizing antibody was detected in 83.3% of the skunks tested from Massachusetts. HI antibody was found in 1 of 6 long-tailed w

Complete Mitogenomes of Ticks Ixodes acutitarsus and Ixodes ovatus Parasitizing Giant Panda: Deep Insights into the Comparative Mitogenomic and Phylogenetic Relationship of Ixodidae Species.

Ticks rank second in the world as vectors of disease. Tick infestation is one of the factors threatening the health and survival of giant pandas. Here, we describe the mitogenomes of Ixodes acutitarsus and Ixodes ovatus parasitizing giant pandas, and perform comparative and phylogenetic genomic analyses on the newly sequenced and other available mitogenomes of hard ticks. All six newly determined mitogenomes contain a typical gene component and share an ancient Arthropoda gene arrangement pattern. Our study suggests that I. ovatus is a species complex with high genetic divergence, indicating t

Molecular identification of Salp15, a key salivary gland protein in the transmission of lyme disease spirochetes, from Ixodes persulcatus and Ixodes pacificus (Acari: Ixodidae).

Salp15 is a multifunctional protein, vital to the tick in its need to obtain vertebrate host blood without stimulating a host inflammatory and immune response. The Salpl5 protein from both Ixodes scapularis Say and Ixodes ricinus (L.), the principal vectors of the Lyme disease spirochete in eastern North America and Europe, respectively, have been well characterized and found to bind the murine CD4 receptor, DC-SIGN, and the OspC protein of Borrelia burgdorferi. In the current study, we characterized the full salp15 gene in Ixodes pacificus Cooley & Kohls and Ixodes persulcatus Schulze, the pr

Detection of suitable habitat areas in Japan of the Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis vectors Ixodes ovatus and Ixodes persulcatus based on abiotic factors.

In Japan, Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) are primarily in the northernmost prefecture Hokkaido, where their primary vectors Ixodes ovatus and Ixodes persulcatus are most abundant. Recently, tick surveillance activities have collected both species across Japan, indicating potential expansion of their tick-borne pathogens (TBPs). We built a machine-learning (ML) model using available tick surveillance and environmental data to predict suitable habitat areas for I. ovatus and I. persulcatus and identify potential higher-risk areas of Lyme disease and TBE across Japan. Data on the

Variability of the tick-borne encephalitis virus genome in the 5' noncoding region derived from ticks Ixodes persulcatus and Ixodes pavlovskyi in Western Siberia.

We report the prevalence of Siberian and Far Eastern subtypes of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) in Ixodes persulcatus and Ix. pavlovskyi ticks collected in Tomsk and its suburbs during 2006-2008. The TBEV was detected in 5.7% ticks collected in the city, where Ix. pavlovskyi ticks were dominated and 7.5% ticks from suburban foci with prevalence Ix. persulcatus ticks. Genotyping of the virus showed that Siberian subtype (89.5%) is predominant in individual ticks of Tomsk suburbs; however, the proportion of Far Eastern subtype in two urban sites reached 47%. Sympatric Ixodes trianguliceps and Ixodes ricinus ticks feeding on field voles (Microtus agrestis): potential for increased risk of Anaplasma phagocytophilum in the United Kingdom?

The importance of wild rodents as reservoirs of zoonotic tick-borne pathogens is considered low in the United Kingdom because, in studies to date, those parasitized by exophilic Ixodes ricinus ticks carry almost exclusively larvae and thus have a minor role in transmission cycles. In a cross-sectional study, 11 (6.7%) of 163 field voles (Microtus agrestis) captured at field sites in Northern England were PCR-positive for Anaplasma phagocytophilum. The voles were found to act as hosts for both larval and nymphal I. ricinus and all stages of the nidicolous tick I. trianguliceps, and eight indivi

Reported County-Level Distribution of Seven Human Pathogens Detected in Host-Seeking Ixodes scapularis and Ixodes pacificus (Acari: Ixodidae) in the Contiguous United States.

Tickborne disease cases account for over 75% of reported vector-borne disease cases in the United States each year. In addition to transmitting the agents of Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi sensu strict [Spirochaetales: Spirochaetaceae] and Borrelia mayonii [Spirochaetales: Spirochaetaceae]), the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis, and the western blacklegged tick, Ixodes pacificus collectively transmit five additional human pathogens.
