Implementing evidence-based treatment for pregnant people with opioid use disorder in jail: A qualitative analysis of jail administrator and clinician perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: Overdose is a leading cause of maternal mortality in the United States, and pregnant individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) frequently interact with the criminal legal system. While the benefits of providing life-saving medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) during pregnancy are well-established, access to MOUD in jail remains limited and inconsistent. Although existing literature identifies general barriers to MOUD implementation in incarcerated settings, the specific needs of pregnant individuals are often overlooked. Our study assessed the perspectives of jail custody

A Novel Double Side Branch Protection Technique for a Left Main Trifurcation Lesion: Simultaneous Jailed Balloon and Jailed Corsair Technique.

Percutaneous coronary intervention for left main trifurcation disease is challenging. Although side branch protection techniques such as the jailed balloon technique and jailed Corsair technique are the established methods for treatment of coronary bifurcation lesions, little is known regarding the application and feasibility of these techniques for left main trifurcation disease. We herein describe a 72-year-old man with angina pectoris who was successfully treated with percutaneous coronary stent implantation for a left main trifurcation lesion. In this case, we performed a novel double side

Correlates of recovery capital among women in jails: Leveraging a dimensional recovery framework.

BACKGROUND: Recovery capital encompasses internal and external factors that support recovery from substance use disorder, such as employment, social support, and physical and mental health. There is a need for more research on recovery capital among women who are incarcerated, who often face complex barriers to recovery, such as poverty, unemployment, and histories of trauma. METHODS: Women (N = 900) were recruited from Kentucky jails as part of the broader NIDA-funded Kentucky Justice Community Opioid Innovation Network (JCOIN) cooperative project. Measures from baseline interviews (during i

Barriers to Universal Availability of Medications for Opioid Use Disorder in US Jails.

IMPORTANCE: Many of the approximately 2 million people being held in US correctional facilities are experiencing an opioid use disorder (OUD). Providing medications for OUD (MOUD) to this population is, therefore, essential to curb the opioid crisis. OBJECTIVE: To examine the types of MOUD jails are making available, factors associated with availability, and additional supports needed for jails to address implementation challenges. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This survey study used a cross-sectional survey of jails conducted between February 2 and July 1, 2023, to explore how they adm

Lost in Transition: The Behavioral Health Needs of Veterans in Eight County Jails.

The behavioral health needs, service utilization, and discharge planning provision of veterans in jails have been understudied, yet practitioners must understand each component to ensure veterans' behavioral health needs are met through linkage to culturally-appropriate services. Thus, this study asked: How do veterans differ from non-veterans regarding behavioral health needs, jail-based service engagement, and discharge planning within jails? How do jails identify veterans and are they referred to culturally-appropriate services? In a booking sample across eight jails, this evaluative, cross

Contraception Policies in U.S. Jails, Prisons, and Juvenile Detention Systems: A National Survey.

Contraception is an important health care service for incarcerated women, yet its availability in U.S. prisons, jails, and juvenile detention systems is unknown. We surveyed 6 jails, 22 state prisons, and 3 juvenile detention systems (N = 31 sites) on their contraception policies in 2016. Twenty (65%) sites had formal written contraception policies. All sites allowed people to continue a preincarceration contraceptive method with restrictions on the type of contraception and reason for use. Two sites (6%) did not allow continuation of oral contraceptive pills, 3 sites (10%) did not allow conti

A systematic review of interventions for older adults living in jails and prisons.

Objectives: The population of older adults in prison is the fastest growing demographic. Older inmates are more likely to have chronic medical conditions and cognitive decline, but these conditions occur earlier and may be more complex for older inmates. Specialized interventions to manage the unique health and mental health needs of older inmates are important to improve health and reduce burden on criminal justice systems. The aim of this research is to conduct a systematic review of empirically-tested interventions to improve the health or mental health of older adults living in jail or pri

A Survey of Health Disparities, Social Determinants of Health, and Converging Morbidities in a County Jail: A Cultural-Ecological Assessment of Health Conditions in Jail Populations.

The environmental health status of jail populations in the United States constitutes a significant public health threat for prisoners and the general population. The ecology of jails creates a dynamic condition in relation to general population health due to the concentrated potential exposure to infectious diseases, difficult access to treatment for chronic health conditions, interruption in continuity of care for serious behavioral health conditions, as well as on-going issues for the prevention and treatment of substance abuse disorders. This paper reports on elements of a cross-sectional s

Childhood trauma, substance use and mental health: Exploring differences across two Tunisian jails.

INTRODUCTION: The increasing rate of incarceration represents a significant public health issue worldwide. However, focusing on mental health issues and exploring gender differences among this vulnerable population is lacking in the literature. We aimed to assess differences in childhood trauma, substance use, and mental health among two Tunisian jails. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two cross-sectional studies were conducted in two Tunisian prisons with different gender compositions, one involving male prisoners in April 2023 and the other involving female prisoners in July 2024. We used Arabic-vali

Hepatitis C Testing Protocols Across Massachusetts Jails, 2022-2023: An Opportunity for Intervention.

OBJECTIVES: Hepatitis C virus (HCV), the most common blood-borne infection in the United States and a leading cause of liver disease, disproportionately affects populations who are incarcerated. Despite the prevalence of HCV infection among people involved in the criminal legal system, HCV testing and treatment policies are not yet standardized. Our study sought to examine the differences in HCV testing and treatment protocols across Massachusetts county jails. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we examined the HCV testing and treatment protocols of the 14 county jails in Massachusetts f

Establishing an early warning surveillance system in jails in Calabarzon, the Philippines, 2021.

The Philippines' Republic Act 11332 (2020) mandates prisons, jails and detention centres to participate in disease surveillance, but currently no surveillance system exists in these facilities. This report aims to describe the piloting of an early warning disease surveillance system in 21 selected jails in Calabarzon from July to September 2021. Sites were selected based on congestion, proximity to health facilities and logistical capacity. Data sources, collection mechanisms and reporting tools were determined and health personnel were trained in the operation of the system. During the implem

Characteristics of Substance Use Screening at Intake in a Sample of U.S. Jails.

BACKGROUND: Despite high rates of substance use among justice-involved populations, the use of substance screening tools in justice settings varies. METHODS: Data are from the National Jail Health Care Study, which surveyed jails across the U.S. about their health care practices (n=371). Jails were asked to voluntarily submit their medical intake forms. A content analysis of intake forms (n=63) specific to questions about substance use was completed. RESULTS: Seventy-three percent (73%) of intake forms used non-standardized questions to assess current substance use, and 27% did not ask any q

Identification, Referral, and Services for Individuals With Serious Mental Illness Across Multiple Jails.

Identification of serious mental illness (SMI) among those entering jail is the first step in diversion or appropriate services in jail. Although best practices guidelines for identifying SMI exist, many jails do not employ these standards. Researchers describe identification of SMI in the "practice as usual" and compare/contrast the results with a validated screening instrument for 2,961 individuals across eight jails. Overall, 20% scored positive on the screening instrument, and staff identification yielded an additional 16%. While the instrument was consistent in identifying the proportion

The mentally ill in jails and prisons: towards an integrated model of prevention.

Jails and prisons have become a final destination for persons with severe mental illness in America. Addiction, homelessness, and fragmentation of services have contributed to the problem, and have underscored the need for new models of service delivery. Project Link is a university-led consortium of five community agencies in Monroe County, New York that spans healthcare, social service and criminal justice systems. The program features a mobile treatment team with a forensic psychiatrist, a dual diagnosis treatment residence, and culturally competent staff. This paper discusses the importanc

Does a state mandate translate into jail policy? Evidence from a policy surveillance study of opioid use disorder care in Colorado jails.

BACKGROUND: People with opioid use disorder (OUD) are disproportionately represented in US jails, yet access to evidence-based treatment remains limited. In May 2022, Colorado enacted House Bill 22-1326, which mandated that all county jails provide medications of OUD (MOUD). This study sought to describe Colorado jail policies for OUD treatment after the 2022 state mandate and explore differences by county characteristics. METHODS: We conducted a policy surveillance study of all Colorado jail policies, including public-facing and requested policies, for the treatment of OUD between June and O

Digesting detention: how to document eating patterns in jail.

BACKGROUND: People incarcerated experience significant health inequities compared to the non-incarcerated population, including higher rates of many diet-related diseases. Despite widespread acceptance of the association between diet and health, research documenting the dietary intake and nutritional status of individuals incarcerated in jail is limited. Food intake is notoriously difficult to measure, and current measurement tools are not designed for the jail setting. This study aimed to assess the acceptability and feasibility of a comprehensive tool to assess food intake during incarcerati
