A detailed review was made of 1025 consecutive patients with "face-bone" fractures admitted to four Montreal hospitals over the five-year period 1958-1962, inclusive. In addition a survey was carried out of the other general hospitals in Greater Montreal in order to obtain admission figures for facial-bone fractures and for total hospital cases. In the study group the common causes of face-bone fractures were found to be fights, traffic accidents, falls, and athletic pursuits. Very few of these injuries occurred in industrial settings. A distinctly vulnerable group is made up of males between

Zygomatico-coronoid fibrous ankylosis of the mandible is a complication which rarely occurs if fractures of the middle third of the facial skeleton have been adequately treated. 379 zygomatic fractures in hospitalized patients were treated at the Department of Jaw Surgery of the Surgical Hospital in Helsinki between 1969 and 1975. 36 cases were characterized by convalescence being complicated by significant restriction of jaw opening. 25 patients were successfully treated by physiotherapy and 6 other by a forced opening of the jaws under general anaesthesia. In the remaining 5 cases 91.3% of t

Jaw fractures are prevalent facial injuries. Choosing the optimal intermaxillary/maxillomandibular fixation(IMF/MMF) technique is crucial for a successful conservative and surgical treatment, to achieve perfect occlusion. This network meta-analysis aimed to identify the most time-efficient and safe technique for IMF by comparing currently used techniques. A systematic search was performed in four databases, where 20,249 studies were identified; after the selection process 29 were included in the synthesis. Application time of IMF screws(IMFS)(MD -47,95% CI -62 to-33) and Hybrid Maxillomandibula

The use of bisphosphonates in treatment of osteoporosis declined significantly over the past decade. There is currently great concern, among patients and physicians, about two potential skeletal adverse effects associated with bisphosphonates- jaw osteonecrosis and atypical femur fractures. This has become a major public health issue since untreated osteoporosis carries a significant burden in terms of fracture-related morbidity and mortality, and bisphosphonates, considered first-line therapy for osteoporosis, have established efficacy in fracture and mortality reduction. Areas covered: In th

Osteoporosis is a major, growing healthcare issue. This is especially of concern in an ageing population like that of Singapore. Osteoporotic patients are at risk of fractures, which can result in increased morbidity and mortality. The use of antiresorptive therapy with bisphosphonates or denosumab has been proven to reduce fracture risk. However, the use of these medications has rarely been associated with the development of osteonecrosis of the jaw, a potentially debilitating condition affecting one or both jaws. Appropriate understanding of the patient's antiresorptive therapy regime, as we

Radiation treatment plays a mainstream role in the management of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs). Adverse effects from radiation therapy include osteoradionecrosis of the jaw, and rarely, pathologic fracture. Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) such as pembrolizumab are of growing relevance to the management of metastatic and recurrent HNSCCs. Adverse impacts on bone secondary to medications such as pembrolizumab and nivolumab have been sporadically documented in the literature. The objective of this manuscript is to raise awareness of possible increase in risk for adverse jaw o

Facial bone and especially mandibular fractures are injuries in which first aid and management of late complications require dental professionals, and consequently all dentists should be familiar with the modern principles of their treatment. Tooth involvement is common in mandibular and maxillary fractures and can require more treatment than does the jaw fracture. Nonsurgical treatment of bone fractures involves immobilization, which for the facial bones is achieved with maxillomandibular fixation (MMF) using dental fixed arch bars. Hence, associated tooth injuries are difficult or impossible

INTRODUCTION: Oral bisphosphonates are commonly prescribed for osteoporosis to arrest bone loss and preserve bone density. Complications such as atypical femoral fractures (AFF) and osteonecrosis of jaw (ONJ) are rare.
CASE REPORT: We describe a case of a 60-year-old patient who was on oral bisphosphonate therapy for osteoporosis and developed ONJ, AFF, recurrent ONJ, and subsequent mandible fracture with delayed AFF union - this is a very unique and extremely rare case. For the same, she underwent multiple surgeries - sequestrectomy in the mandible, proximal femoral nailing for femur fractur

Pyknodysostosis is a rare sclerosing bone disorder that has an autosomal dominant trait. It is characterized by short stature, brachycephaly, short and stubby fingers, open cranial sutures and fontanelle, and diffuse osteosclerosis, where multiple fractures of long bones and osteomyelitis of the jaw are frequent complications. We present a report of two cases of pyknodysostosis with evidence of long bone fractures and chronic suppurative osteomyelitis of the jaws in one of the cases. Some of the specific oral and radiological findings that are consistent with pyknodysostosis are reported, alon

This article presents two fetal cases of gnathodiaphyseal dysplasia (GDD), a rare autosomal dominant disorder, and reviews the relevant literature. The cases involved two fetuses exhibiting bone bowing, which led to the diagnosis of GDD. Genetic testing revealed two de novo variants of the ANO5 gene, confirming the diagnosis. A literature review was conducted to explore GDD's clinical and paraclinical presentation, diagnosis, and management. GDD is a rare but frequently inherited cause of bone fragility and jaw lesions characterized by a gain-of-function variant within the ANO5 gene. Clinical

Orthopantomography, i.e. a single radiograph producing a panorama-like view of the entire jaw, was originally developed for the diagnosis of dental diseases. Further developments have made this technique useful for routine ENT examination also. The main indications for orthopantomography in otorhinolaryngology are: diseases of the maxillary sinus (especially of the basal parts), fractures of the jaws, sialolithiasis, tumours of the oral cavity invading the jaw, osseous tumours and facial anomalies.

After treatment of fractures in the neck of the mandible by means of immobilization of the dentition, often more or less severe manifestations of malocclusion remain. It was hypothesized that this is caused by an altered articulation in the jaw joint on the affected side. Furthermore, it was hypothesized that an anteriorly displaced condyle, as observed frequently as a side effect of the treatment, is caused by pull of the lateral pterygoid muscle, despite maxillomandibular fixation. Intervention experiments were performed in silico to test these hypotheses. With a biomechanical model of the h

All stingrays in the family Myliobatidae are durophagous, consuming bivalves and gastropods, as well as decapod crustaceans. Durophagous rays have rigid jaws, flat teeth that interlock to form pavement-like tooth plates, and large muscles that generate bite forces capable of fracturing stiff biological composites (e.g. mollusk shell). The relative proportion of different prey types in the diet of durophagous rays varies between genera, with some stingray species specializing on particular mollusk taxa, while others are generalists. The tooth plate module provides a curved occlusal surface on w

A consecutive series of cases of dogs and cats with locked jaw syndrome (inability to open or close the mouth) are reported in this study. Dogs were significantly overrepresented (84.0%) and adult dogs were more frequently affected (81.0%). Temporomandibular joint ankylosis due to fracture was the most common cause (54.0%) of locked jaw syndrome. Additional potential causes of locked jaw syndrome are masticatory muscle myositis, neoplasia, trigeminal nerve paralysis and central neurological lesions, temporomandibular joint luxation and dysplasia, osteoarthritis, retrobulbar abscess, tetanus, a
