The Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is a cystic lesion of the jaws, which has high growth and recurrence rates compared to other cysts of the jaws (for instance, radicular cyst, which is the most common jaw cyst type). For this reason OKCs are considered by some to be benign neoplasms. There exist two sub-types of OKCs (sporadic and syndromic) and the ability to discriminate between these sub-types, as well as other jaw cysts, is an important task in terms of disease diagnosis and prognosis. With the development of digital pathology, computational algorithms have become central to addressing this

Plasma cell neoplasms (plasmacytoma) are discrete, solitary masses of lymphoid neoplastic proliferations of B cells. Plasmacytomas comprise three groups: multiple myeloma, solitary plasmacytoma (SP) and extramedullary plasmacytoma. SP originates as a clone of transformed malignant plasma cells in the bone marrow. SP of the jaw is a rare condition; therefore diagnosis is quite difficult and often results in misdiagnosis. MM is a lymphoproliferative disease the prognosis of which is worse than SP. SP can progress to MM in a few months to years after diagnosis. In this regard, early diagnosis of

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS) is an inherited sequence variant in TP53 characterized by the early onset of various core malignancies including adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC), sarcomas, breast cancer, leukemias, and central nervous system tumors. We present a case of a patient with LFS who developed endocrine neoplasms not classically seen in LFS in addition to developing ACC.
CASE REPORT: A 26-year-old nonbinary individual assigned female at birth with a history of LFS complicated by osteosarcoma of the jaw was incidentally found to have thyroid and sellar masses on surveil

Solitary plasmacytoma is a rare plasma cell neoplasm, most often arising in vertebrae and long bones; among these, mandibular involvement is exceptional. The following report documents a rare mandibular presentation in a 48‑year‑old female patient who presented with pain and swelling in the right lower jaw. Clinical examination, radiographic findings, and histopathology confirmed the diagnosis. The lesion was managed surgically with hemi‑mandibulectomy and reconstruction, with no recurrence to date. This case highlights the importance of early recognition of maxillofacial plasmacytomas by dent

Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) is an uncommon tumor of odontogenic origin, characterized histologically by the formation of ductlike structures with amyloid-like deposits. Histogenesis of AOT is still uncertain and it is often considered as a hamartomatous lesion rather than a true neoplasm. AOT has a benign behavior and conservative surgical enucleation or curettage is sufficient. We report a case of AOT in a 15-year-old female who presented with left-sided jaw swelling with tooth resorption. Histopathology revealed intraosseus follicular variant of AOT. A brief review of literature is a

Non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHLs) in the head and neck region are malignant lymphoid neoplasms that usually originate from B-lymphocytic cell lines. Primary extranodal manifestations of this hematolymphoid tumor in the oral cavity are rare and involve the maxillary jaw including the palatal soft tissues, the mandible, and gingival tissues in patients between 60 and 70 years of age without sex predilection. This case report of an extra-nodal NHL in the palate of a 75-year-old patient emphasizes the importance of accurate clinical, radiographic, and histologic diagnostic procedures to avoid delayed d

Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS, basal cell naevus syndrome, Gorlin syndrome) is an autosomal dominant disorder, caused by mutations in the PTCH gene mapped to chromosome 9q22.3. It is characterised by multiple basal cell carcinomas, keratocysts of the jaws, palmar and plantar pits, cerebral ectopic calcification and several skeletal anomalies. Occasionally, patients with NBCCS develop other neoplasms, particularly medulloblastomas and ovarian fibromas, indicating that the PTCH gene is a tumor-suppressor gene. Early recognition and careful follow-up are needed. Guidelines for manag

INTRODUCTION: Submandibular region is surgically significant in the head and neck field and a mass in this region may have multiple differential diagnoses.
CASE REPORT: An elderly man came with a single 4×2.5 cm swelling in the neck on the right side, just below the lower jaw, since one month. Ultrasound showed an irregular heterogeneous hypoechoic lesion in the right submandibular space measuring 37×23 mm with mild internal vascularity. The submandibular gland appeared separate but compressed. Fine needle aspiration was suggestive of spindle cell neoplasm. The swelling was excised under gene

BACKGROUND: Lymphomas in the oral and oropharyngeal regions are relatively uncommon, and their diagnosis is challenging and complex due to the myriad histopathological subtypes. Herein, we report a large series of oral and oropharyngeal lymphomas and compare our data with the currently available literature.
METHODS: All cases diagnosed as lymphomas affecting the oral and oropharyngeal regions were retrospectively retrieved from seven Brazilian institutions. Clinicodemographic data and histopathological features were evaluated and described, while a comprehensive literature review was undertak

BACKGROUND: Familial neoplastic syndromes are distinguished by the presence of specific neoplasms which serve as critical indicators for their suspicion and diagnosis. Among these, only a limited subset includes tumors with distinctive oncocytic features, highlights the necessity for pathologists and clinicians to pursue further investigation in affected patients and their families.
SUMMARY: Advances in genetic research and diagnostic pathology have highlighted the germline predispositions underlying these tumors, which manifest across multiple organ systems, including thyroid, parathyroid, r

A carotid body tumor is a rare neoplasm, generally benign, that predominantly affects people between their fourth and fifth decades of life. It manifests as a pulsatile and generally painless cervical mass with firm consistency, located below the angle of the jaw. It can progress to the extent that it causes localized pain, dysphagia, hiccups, hoarseness and hypersensitive carotid body syndrome. This article reports the cases of two female patients diagnosed with this tumor who were treated surgically. The first was treated with block resection of the tumor, while the second patient, who had a

Central Giant Cell Granuloma constitutes approximately 7% of benign tumors of the jaws. The aggressive form of CGCG clinically behaves like a classic semi-malignant neoplasm. In the literature, the suggested method of treatment of aggressive forms of CGCG is curettage or resection with the margin of 0.5 cm. Surgical treatment, especially in the developmental age, entails disturbances in the growth and differentiation of tissues and deforms and disturbs the functioning of the stomatognathic system. Alternative treatment methods of the CGCG presented in this article lead to the patient avoiding

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common tumor of the kidney. Although RCC often metastasizes to other organs, metastasis to the head and neck region is rare, and metastasis to the mandible is very unusual. Given the fact that metastasis of primary neoplasms is not always predictable, it is essential to rule out metastatic carcinoma in jaw lesions. We herein report a rare presentation of metastasis of RCC to the mandible, in which the metastatic lesion in the oral cavity was found first, followed by the primary lesion, in a 22-year-old girl who suffered from pain in the left temporomandib

BACKGROUND: Malignancies in the head and neck region are difficult to diagnose because of their deep location and presence of symptoms mimicking those of temporomandibular disorders or other orofacial pain disorders.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 75-year-old woman reported experiencing right-sided jaw pain, temporal discomfort and paresthesia. She had undergone conservative therapy for temporomandibular joint disorder, which was unsuccessful. A magnetic resonance image of the midface revealed a mass on the base of the tongue along with possible metastatic lesions to the brain. Further investigation of

Significant histological overlap exists between fibro-osseous lesions and diagnosis is made on a clinicopathological basis. Ossifying fibroma is a benign fibro-osseous neoplasm of the jaw and craniofacial complex that has generated a degree of controversy regarding diagnosis and classification, especially with respect to the psammomatoid variant. Orbital lesions mainly arise from the paranasal sinuses affecting the medial or inferior orbital wall. Lateral orbital wall ossifying fibroma is, therefore, a rare condition with only a single previous case report. We present a second case of lateral

Ameloblastoma (adamantinoma) is a benign neoplasm deriving from the enamel organ. Its etiology has not been ultimately determined. It constitutes about 1% of all head and neck tumours, and about 11% of teeth-originating tumours. Usually it occurs in the mandible near premolar and molar teeth, more rarely in its anterior part. About 20% of described cases of ameloblastoma relate to the jaw, its very rare location is gingiva or cheak tunica mucosa. The essay presents a case of ameloblastoma of a maxillary sinus in a 65-year-old man. The diagnostic and treatment algorithm in ameloblastoma is disc

Myofibroma (MF) is an uncommon benign mesenchymal neoplasm composed of myofibroblasts. Traumatic neuroma (TN) is a non-neoplastic proliferative disorder of the nerve sheath in response to injury or surgery. Both are uncommon in the jaws. We present a case of a 39-year-old Afro-descendant woman with a unilocular radiolucent lesion in the posterior mandible, showing mild expansion and cortical disruption. Biopsy revealed proliferation of fascicularly arranged spindle cells strongly positive for α-SMA and podoplanin, with low Ki-67 (<5%), and the final diagnosis was central MF. Ten months after e

Ghost cell odontogenic carcinoma (GCOC) is a rare malignant neoplasm, representing 3% of all ghost cell lesions of the jaws. They can arise de novo or from a pre-existing calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) or dentinogenic ghost cell tumour (DGCT). A systematic review of the literature reported only 12 cases of a GCOC arising from a pre-existing COC. This report highlights an additional case of a GCOC arising from a pre-existing COC after 3 years in an adolescent male. The patient initially presented with a painless swelling of the right mandibular corpus. Panoramic radiographic examination show
