Job Satisfaction, Leadership Behaviors, and Turnover Intention Among Nurses in Saudi Arabia: A Mediation Analysis.

AIM: To examine the associations among nurses' perceived leadership behavior, job satisfaction, and turnover intention in Saudi Arabia and to determine whether perceived leadership behavior mediates the relationship between job satisfaction and turnover intention. BACKGROUND: Nurses' turnover intention remains a major challenge for healthcare systems worldwide. High turnover contributes to nursing shortages, negatively affects patient outcomes, and increases healthcare costs. Although job satisfaction is a well-established predictor of turnover intention, limited research has explored the pot

User Violence and Nursing Staff Burnout: The Modulating Role of Job Satisfaction.

Exposure to patient violence in health staff can lead to the onset of burnout in these workers. The main goal of this investigation is to study how exposure to this kind of violence affects onset of burnout and to appraise the role of job satisfaction as a modulating variable. A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out using a self-administered anonymous questionnaire with the nursing staff of all the public hospitals of the Region of Murcia (Spain), obtaining a sample of 1,489 health professionals. From the results obtained, we underline the modulating role of extrinsic job satisfac

Artificial intelligence exceeds humans in epidemiological job coding.

BACKGROUND: Work circumstances can substantially negatively impact health. To explore this, large occupational cohorts of free-text job descriptions are manually coded and linked to exposure. Although several automatic coding tools have been developed, accurate exposure assessment is only feasible with human intervention. METHODS: We developed OPERAS, a customizable decision support system for epidemiological job coding. Using 812,522 entries, we developed and tested classification models for the Professions et Catégories Socioprofessionnelles (PCS)2003, Nomenclature d'Activités Française (NA

Are nurses in mental health services providing physical health care for people with serious mental illness? An Australian perspective.

People with serious mental illness are at high-risk for physical illnesses and premature death, and nurses can contribute to ensuring mental health services address these risks. There is very little research examining the role of nurses in mental health who provide physical health care. To identify the levels of participation in physical health care of people with serious mental illness (SMI), a national Internet-based survey of nurses working in mental health in Australia was conducted (n = 643). The survey included an adapted version of the Robson and Haddad Physical Health Attitude Scale. D

Age, job characteristics and coronary health.

BACKGROUND: Workplace demographics are changing in many European countries with a higher proportion of older workers in employment. Research has shown that there is an association between job strain and cardiovascular disease, but this relationship is unclear for the older worker. AIMS: To investigate the association between job strain and a coronary event comparing younger and older male workers. METHODS: Cases with a first-time coronary event were recruited from four coronary/intensive care units (1999-2001). Matched controls were recruited from the case's general practitioner surgery. Phy

Time-period mortality patterns in a Gaseous Diffusion Plant workforce.

BACKGROUND: We sub-divided a cohort of 6820 workers at the Paducah (KY) Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP) which was traced from 1953 to 2003. The subdivisions were made to assess the mortality risks in a sub-group of workers employed solely during the plant's refit period, a time of suspected higher exposure to metal dusts (nickel, arsenic, chromium and uranium) and trichloroethylene. METHODS: This article describes a comparison of exposures and causes of death for 754 workers employed exclusively during the period of 1975-1979, with 1554 workers who worked in this period as well as other years.

Workplace exacerbation of asthma symptoms: findings from a population-based study in Maine.

In this population-based study of asthma in the State of Maine, the authors investigated how often asthma symptoms were exacerbated in the workplace. Participants from 5 hospital service areas in Maine completed a telephone questionnaire. Of 474 adult participants (18-65 yr of age) employed during the preceding year and for whom information on occupation and industry was available, 64 (13.5%) were identified with current asthma, including 28 (5.9%) with current physician-diagnosed asthma and 36 (7.6%) who met criteria for symptoms consistent with asthma. Jobs were identified a priori as "high-

Analysis of practice-role perceptions of physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language therapy students.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether physical therapy (PT), occupational therapy (OT), and speech-language therapy (SLP) students shared common perceptions of the practice roles of the three disciplines. The survey instrument used in this study contained 55 questions that addressed practice-role perceptions. The questions were based on a case study. A total of 172 undergraduate students (PT 71, OT 52, SLP 49) from a southeastern university participated. Chi-square test of association was used to analyze the data. Results showed that PT, OT, and SLP students shared common percepti

Exploring cell apoptosis and senescence to understand and treat cancer: an interview with Scott Lowe.

Scott W. Lowe is currently principal investigator at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. After beginning his studies in chemical engineering, he decided to take another path and became fascinated by biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology, which ultimately led to an interest in human disease, particularly cancer. During his PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Scott had the opportunity to benefit from the exceptional mentorship of Earl Ruley, David Housman and Tyler Jacks, and contributed to elucidating how the p53 (TP53) tumor suppressor gene limits oncogenic t

The Diesel Exhaust in Miners Study: II. Exposure monitoring surveys and development of exposure groups.

Air monitoring surveys were conducted between 1998 and 2001 at seven non-metal mining facilities to assess exposure to respirable elemental carbon (REC), a component of diesel exhaust (DE), for an epidemiologic study of miners exposed to DE. Personal exposure measurements were taken on workers in a cross-section of jobs located underground and on the surface. Air samples taken to measure REC were also analyzed for respirable organic carbon (ROC). Concurrent measurements to assess exposure to nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), two gaseous components of DE, were also taken. The REC me

[The nurse--construction of a behavior model, based on the medical discourse at the beginning of the century].

The purpose of this study is to trace a parallel between the medical discourse content and the expected and stereotyped nurses behavior at the beginning of the twentieth century. It is a historic-social approach in which authors analysed the speeches used by nurses and physicians at nursing and medicine schools. The analysis of the physicians discourse compared to nurses discourse revealed the formation of a mentality shaped by the medical power that wanted them "holy" and servile.

Psychological work capacity demands, according to Mini-ICF-APP-WS, on different health professionals - A naturalistic observation study.

PURPOSES: Capacity-oriented workplace-description is on the one hand, the basis for occupational health action, e.g. for reintegration and work adjustment. On the other hand, it is also necessary for preventive action, e.g. mental hazard analysis or job-matching. When self-ratings are used for a work description, that description must not be confused by an affective judgment about the workplace, e.g. work-satisfaction. Health professionals are especially prone for high workload and potentially a very broad spectrum of work-duties. Studying health professionals is valuable for gaining empirical

Ruminations of a geriatric Emeritus Regius Professor of Medicine.

The potential for the holder of a senior academic post to influence the medical world is usually enshrined in their job description. Even though Oxford University failed to provide one, this account of 25 years of undirected activity suggests that such posts can influence events, albeit to a limited extent and not always in the expected direction.

A critical, worldwide shortage of thoracic organs exists. The donor management program at Papworth Hospital, National Health Service Trust, Cambridge, United Kingdom, allows satisfactory transplantation of thoracic organs that initially appear unsuitable. The perioperative organ retrieval team members assess the cardiovascular status of all potential donors and manage suboptimal hemodynamics with hormonal replacement therapy consisting of triiodothyronine, antidiuretic hormone, epinephrine, and insulin. These donors' cardiovascular and pulmonary functions must be within acceptable limits at th
