Young female migrants and job placement brokers in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION: Rates of urbanization in Ethiopia are high and adolescent girls and young women are predominant among those who move from rural to urban areas. Young women frequently undertake rural-urban migration on their own or with a friend, and with little planning for their initial settlement in the city. They frequently rely on job placement brokers to place them into jobs upon arrival, with positions such as domestic work normally including accommodation. METHODS: This is a qualitative study undertaken at the two largest bus stages in Addis Ababa, which are points of arrival for a large

Speaking up under constraints: a configurational JD-R explanation of safety voice among young construction workers.

INTRODUCTION: Young construction workers are exposed to high levels of occupational safety risk while often occupying relatively vulnerable positions in work groups. Safety voice is an important participatory mechanism for early hazard identification and occupational injury prevention. However, existing studies have mainly examined the net effects of individual predictors, offering limited insight into how multiple job demands, job resources, and personal capabilities combine to enable or constrain safety voice. METHODS: Drawing on the job demands-resources framework, this study adopted a con

Economic roots of cognitive decline: Tracing early-life shocks to late-life health.

This study investigates the long-term associations between early-life economic shocks and cognitive decline in later years, emphasizing the mediating roles of education, unemployment, and health-related factors. Using data from the Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), we examine the relationship between childhood economic adversity, such as parental job loss, poverty, and limited access to educational material at home, and cognitive performance in old age. Applying the Karlson-Holm-Breen (KHB) method, we assess how economic and health factors throughout life mediate this

Antibiotics as infrastructure: Labour, precarity and healthcare ecology in a Nepali industrial town.

In industrial work environments with limited labour protection and frequent injuries, medicines may function to sustain work capacity rather than facilitate recovery. Focusing on steel production in Nepal, we explored how the local healthcare ecology framed care pathways for steel workers. The analysis draws on concepts of pharmaceuticalisation, local healthcare ecology and the political economy of labour to examine how medicines-particularly antibiotics-enable continued productivity under exploitative work conditions. Ethnographic fieldwork in a steel factory included survey and qualitative i

Building a strategic security organisation.

In everyone's day-to-day jobs there is constant need to deal with current and newly detected matters. This is now a world of immediacy, driven by the cadence of the business and its needs. These concerns should not be ignored, as failing to deal with these issues would not bode well for the future. It is essential that the gears are kept spinning. The challenge for any security organisation is to identify its short-term tactical requirements, while developing longer-term strategic needs. Once done, the differences can be accounted for and strides can be made toward a desired future state. This

Common Mental Disorders and Economic Uncertainty: Evidence from the COVID-19 Pandemic in the U.S.

Mental health disorders represent an enormous cost to society, are related to economic outcomes, and have increased markedly since the COVID-19 outbreak. Economic activity contracted dramatically on a global scale in 2020, representing the worst crisis since the Great Depression. This study used the COVID Impact Survey to provide insights on the interactions of mental illness and economic uncertainty during COVID-19. We used a probability-based panel survey, COVID Impact Survey, conducted in the U.S. over three waves in the period April-June 2020. The survey covered individual information on e

[Sleep disorders and medical work capacity].

Excessive daily sleepiness attribute to sleep disturbances can be a problem for occupational physician concerning the work ability to security works, night shift work and vehicle driving. It's difficult to detect those pathologies because the workers don't identify their symptoms as serious diseases or because they mask these symptoms for fear of the loose of their job. We've studied one case of SAS (sleep apnea syndrome) and one case of narcolepsy to demonstrate: 1) the criterions of the occupational forecast; 2) the sometimes serious social and occupational consequences of a medical inaptitu

Abnormally Low Hemoglobin A1c as Harbinger of Hemoglobinopathy.

The umbrella of employment-based health benefits is growing increasingly threadbare. As a result, health benefits are once again a major arena of labor-management strife, and once again calls for universal health care by many labor leaders mask important differences between them over health care reform. Some labor leaders advocate a bottom-up mobilization in support of a single-payer solution that would dismantle the system of job-based benefits rooted in private insurance. Others stake their health care strategy on wooing key business leaders to be constructive partners in some kind of unspec

The health effects of gendered and devalued work: health outcomes of incarcerated women engaging in sex work and care/service work.

BACKGROUND: Women with a history of incarceration are often engaged in highly gendered work, either sex work or low-wage care/service work jobs. While employment is an important element of reentry plans, low-wage jobs may not necessarily help women leave illicit activities, including commercial sex work. Incarcerated women often move between care/service work and sex work to supplement income, putting them at greater risk for negative health outcomes. RESULTS: Using survey data from 400 women detained in a large urban jail, we examined how incarcerated women's experience with sex work and low

The importance of employment to workers with preexisting behavioral health disorders during the COVID-19 pandemic.

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about the employment experiences of people with preexisting behavioral health conditions during the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, despite the recognized importance of work for this group. METHOD: Two hundred and seventy two adults with behavioral health conditions, recruited through statewide mental health networks in NJ and NY, completed an online survey in April-May 2020. Multivariable analysis examined the effects of sleep and dietary changes, COVID-19 exposure, anxiety (Generalized Anxiety Disorder-2), and depressive symptoms (Patient Health Q

Measurement of precarious work in Brazil: translation, adaptation and dimensionality of the Employment Precariousness Scale (EPRES-Br).

This study analyzed the psychometric properties - acceptability, reliability, and factorial structure - of the Brazilian version of the Employment Precariousness Scale (EPRES-Br), applied to two samples of Brazilian workers: workers with diseases that have been notified compulsorily by the Brazilian Unified National Health System in Salvador and physical therapists in Bahia. Overall, 638 individuals with formal and informal work contracts answered the instrument. The acceptability, internal consistency, and dimensionality of the scale were evaluated using descriptive and analytical statistics,

Unemployment, job insecurity, and partner mental health: Longitudinal dyadic evidence from Germany.

Researchers have long argued that unemployment affects the mental health of both, individuals and their partners, but findings remain inconsistent. Evidence on job insecurity is even scarcer, despite its widespread occurrence. This study tracks shifts in mental health related to unemployment and job insecurity in couples, testing for gender and educational differences. We analyzed data from the German Socio-Economic Panel (v39.1, years 2002-2022) covering working-age economically active heterosexual cohabiting couples observed without gaps over a nine-year period (five biennial waves, N = 2244

Clusters of out-of-home care trajectories and precarious school-to-work transitions: A Norwegian national register study.

BACKGROUND: Trajectories through child protection services involving out-of-home care (OHC) are diverse, yet studies of OHC and school-to-work transitions often overlook this heterogeneity. METHODS: Using monthly records for three complete Norwegian birth cohorts (1994-1996; N = 172,638), we identified five OHC trajectory clusters among individuals with OHC before age 18 (N = 4789). These clusters were based on placement timing, duration and type. Individuals without OHC were included as a non-OHC group. We examined how cluster membership, together with care instability, is associated with pr

The influence of social norms on safety practices among warehouse employees: Workplace behavior as a moderator.

INTRODUCTION AND METHOD: Employing an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, data were collected from 340 survey respondents and 35 interviewees across logistics facilities. Quantitative analysis using moderated multiple regression revealed that social norms (β = 0.19, p = 0.002) and workplace behavior (β = 0.48, p < 0.001) significantly predict safety practices. However, workplace behavior did not moderate this relationship (p = 0.329). RESULTS: Qualitative findings elucidated this null effect, highlighting dominant operational logics where productivity pressures and conformity overrid

Job loss and mental disorders: International evidence from the early stages of COVID-19 outbreak.

Using a rich individual level dataset from six countries, we examine the relationship between job loss and mental disorders during the first phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. We consider four indicators of mental disorders based on their severity, viz. anxiety, insomnia, boredom, and loneliness. We draw our conclusions based on two groups of countries that differ by the timing of their peak infections count. Using a logit and a two-stage least squares (TSLS) regression methods, we find that the people who lost their jobs due to the pandemic are more likely to suffer from mental disorders, especi

Community perspectives on the Zambian Farm Block Development Program and an evaluation of household income factors: Lessons from Kawambwa district.

Since 2002, the Farm Block Development Program was one of the flagship initiatives within Zambia's agricultural policy. This program was designed to promote commercialization of rural agricultural lands, to contribute to national food security, economic growth, and improved rural livelihoods. However, host community concerns remained untold. This paper aimed at shedding light on those concerns, and the factors associated with household incomes. A qualitative evaluation of submissions from Luena Farm Block residents in Kawambwa district in Zambia, showed that reticent project reception; fears o
