The Moje Acamo carpometacarpal (CMC) implant is an uncemented large ball-and-socket joint made of a ceramic material coated with a bioactive substance (Bioverit) for osseous fixation. Nine Moje Acamo CMC prostheses were implanted into nine patients with primary osteoarthritis of the thumb CMC joint. At 12 months, three implants had been revised because of progressing pain and osteolysis. In the remaining six patients, radiographs have shown progressive osteolysis around both implants in five patients. These poor results mean that we no longer perform this operation and we recommend close follo

Synovial chondromatosis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is rare, and only about 100 cases have been reported. Among these, intracranial extension was reported in only 9. Although some patterns of clinical presentation and evolution, synovial histological changes, and diagnosis by computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging have been described, there is little information about surgical treatment. We report two new cases that focus particularly on reconstruction with costochondral graft and alloplastic TMJ prosthesis. We report what is to our knowledge the youngest reported case of

BACKGROUND: Theoretically, the motion of a bipolar hip prosthesis is most likely to occur at the inner joint if the frictional coefficients are equal at both surfaces. However, many studies have suggested that most motion occurs at the outer joint.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed an analysis of motion in a cadaveric bone model and in 50 patients during fluoroscopic examination, to determine how the motion is distributed between the two joints and what factors contribute to this distribution.
RESULTS: The motion distributions varied widely between the patients. However, there was a relativ

The first clinical results of the Lindenhof ceramic-metal composite prosthesis implanted in our hospital in Freiburg are presented. We observed that same favorable early results as the conventional prostheses in a correct position. The implants are incorporated into the bone within 8-12 weeks. The radiographic films show the adaptation of the supporting bone around the ceramic socket. We explain the failures due to our initial lack of technical experience and/or anatomical deformation of the pelvic bone. complications caused by the post-operative treatment during the 12 weeks following surgery

Transfemoral amputees are currently forced to utilize energetically passive prostheses that provide little to no propulsive work. Among the several joints and muscles required for healthy walking, the ones most vital for push-off assistance include the knee, ankle, and metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joints. There are only a handful of powered knee-ankle prostheses (also called powered transfemoral prostheses) in literature and few of them comprise a toe-joint. However, no one has researched the impact of toe-joint stiffness on walking with a power transfemoral prosthesis. This study is aimed at fil

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcomes of patients who underwent semiconstrained distal radioulnar joint arthroplasty.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on a series of patients who underwent distal radioulnar joint arthroplasty with more than a 23-month follow up. The quantitative outcome variables included the visual analog scale for pain; Disability of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) score; Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation (PRWE); and Mayo wrist score. The range of motion, grip strength, torque, and lifting capacity were measured at final follow up and co

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis is a refractory disease that is difficult to predictably treat. This study evaluated the prognosis of using standard alloplastic TMJ prostheses for the treatment of TMJ ankylosis in Chinese patients with severe mandibular deficiency. Patients treated from 2013 to 2015 were reviewed. The computer-aided design and manufacture (CAD/CAM) technique was used to guide bony mass removal and locate the TMJ prosthesis (Biomet, USA). Eleven patients were included in this study. All prostheses were successfully installed and stabilized intraoperatively. In 4 patient

BACKGROUND: The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the long-term results of a Swanson type silicone prosthesis used for the first metatarsophalangeal (FMTP) joint replacement. It compares implants with and without the use of grommets.
METHODS: Fifty-nine FMTP joints were replaced. The average follow-up period was 9 years. Subjective and clinical findings were scored according to the AOFAS-HMI (American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society-Hallux Metatarsophalangeal-Interphalangeal) score. X-ray examination was carried out by evaluation of the presence of reactive bone areas around t

20 Swanson ulnar head prostheses inserted for post-traumatic disorders of the distal radio-ulnar joint were reviewed at a mean of 44.2 months post-operatively (range 12-104 months). The indication for surgery was painful loss of forearm rotation with or without ulno-carpal impingement and ulno-carpal instability. Symptoms in 16 patients were the result of malunion following severe distal radial fractures (two Frykman 7 fractures and 14 Frykman 8 fractures), and in the remainder were due to unreduced dislocations in the distal radio-ulnar joint (two patients) or unsatisfactory Darrach procedure

The Oxford method of knee arthroplasty replaces the femoral condyles with convex spherical metal components and relines the tibial plateaus with flat metal components. Free meniscal bearings of polyethylene, spherically concave above and flat below, lie between the fixed metal components, held in place by their geometry and ligamentous tension. Advantages of the design include: congruity of the articulating surfaces; unconstrained tibiofemoral movement; preservation of all the ligaments with facility to tension them accurately from a range of bearing thicknesses; minimal bone excision; applica

Transition strides between level-ground walking and stairs are important parts of everyday locomotion that help maintain balance while sustaining the momentum of the user between these activities of daily living. However, most individuals with transfemoral amputations are unable to perform these continuous transitions with their conventional passive prostheses, instead being forced to initiate transitions with a specific leg or pause at the threshold of the staircase. Powered prostheses have the potential to allow for continuous transitions due to their ability to provide positive work and act

BACKGROUND: The design and the surgical technique of the Silent Micro Hip™ are different compared to other hip stems due to a conical shape for fixation within the metaphyseal femur. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate hip joint biomechanics of the Silent Micro Hip™ in comparison to other implants. Implant-specific differences are highlighted.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: 150 consecutive patients (each group 50 Silent Micro Hip™, Nanos™ and SL-Plus™ MIA) were analysed retrospectively. For evaluation of biomechanical parameters pre- and postoperative X-rays (pelvic AP views) were used.

Total temporomandibular joint replacement is a surgical procedure for patients with severe temporomandibular joint afflictions affecting quality of life, which have not responded beneficially to previous conventional surgery. The aim of this study was to assess the long-term outcome of the Groningen temporomandibular joint (TMJ) prosthesis in patients with chronic pain and mutilated temporomandibular joints following multiple surgical procedures, with respect to prosthesis failure, the patient's postoperative level of satisfaction and longitudinal changes in maximum mouth opening, functional m
