Facts and frictions: conflicts of interest in medical research.

I'm going to give you a bird's eye view, as an editor-in-chief, of why conflict of interest in medical research is such a vital problem today in medicine. By the time I am finished, I hope that I will convince you that we physicians and medical scientists need to make sure we take control of our profession to protect our patients in a way that only we can do. The first definition of "conflict of interest" that I could find goes back to 1850 in Webster's Dictionary: "To conflict between the private interests and the official responsibility of a person in a position of trust." That sounds famili

Global disparities and data transparency in editorial boards of prominent Internal medicine journals including allied super specialities: A wake-up call.

BACKGROUND: Global healthcare research suffers from inequalities, favouring high-income countries, which hampers fair healthcare access. Low and lower-middle-income nations face limited participation and editorial bias, posing concerns for research integrity. Potential reasons for this pattern might be the overrepresentation of researchers from the Global North on editorial boards, disparities in the quality of scientific research, lack of support for local research initiatives, and challenges posed by language barriers. The aim of this study was to assess data transparency and representation

Academic nightmares: Predatory publishing.

Academic researchers who seek to publish their work are confronted daily with a barrage of e-mails from aggressive marketing campaigns that solicit them to publish their research with a specialized, often newly launched, journal. Known as predatory journals, they often promise high editorial and publishing standards, yet their exploitive business models, poor quality control, and minimal overall transparency victimize those researchers with limited academic experience and pave the way for low-quality articles that threaten the foundation of evidence-based research. Understanding how to identif

The most cited works in Tourette syndrome.

The impact of scientific articles is proportional to the citations they have received. In this study, the most cited works ("citation classics") related to Tourette syndrome (TS) were identified as articles with more than 100 citations according to the Web of Science. We retrieved 89 highly cited articles, which were published in 26 journals: 54 clinical studies, 27 laboratory studies, 7 reviews, and 1 classification article. Clinical studies consisted of phenomenologic evaluations of TS and comorbid behavioral problems (n = 22) and studies on pharmacotherapy (n = 16) and clinical genetics (n

Publication bias is present in blood and marrow transplantation: an analysis of abstracts at an international meeting.

Publication bias is the preferential publication of research with positive results, and is a threat to the validity of medical literature. Preliminary evidence suggests that research in blood and marrow transplantation (BMT) lacks publication bias. We evaluated publication bias at an international conference, the 2006 Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR)/American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (ASBMT) "tandem" meeting. All abstracts were categorized by type of research, funding status, number of centers, sample size, and direction of the results.

Ultrasound Collaboration across Europe: An EFSUMB success story in politically troubled times?

In these days of political vagueness, to use a kinder term, although many would describe the situation as turmoil, in Europe, there are success stories to be lauded. Notwithstanding the direction individual countries choose in relation to closer or not so close co-operation in Europe and the direction the political agenda will travel over the next few years, I believe science and in particular medicine has benefited enormously form close co-operation across the European Union and with colleagues outside this political and trading block of nations.
