OBJECTIVE: To investigate taste, a component of flavor perception, using electrogustometry (EG) in patients with congenital anosmia associated with Kallmann syndrome (KS).
METHODS: Four patients with KS and 4 control subjects participated in this study. During the first phase of the investigation, the study subjects were administered the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test. During the second phase of the study, EG testing of 2 regions on the anterior tongue tip was performed through an electrode.
RESULTS: Patients with KS, as expected, scored in the anosmic range on the Univ

A 19-year-old man was admitted to our hospital for delayed puberty. At birth, he had macrocephalia and showed delayed physical and mental development. At 9 years of age, right cryptorchism was diagnosed. His parents had noticed that he could not recognize any smells since his infancy. Physical examination on admission revealed ocular hypertelorism, high myopia, high arched palate, and intermittent external strabismus. Sense of smell was scaled out by olfactometry. External genitalia were infantile. Neurological examination showed on IQ of 83, and mild truncal ataxia. Magnetic resonance imaging

We report a case of Kallmann's syndrome (KS) in a previously untreated 30-year-old Caucasian male, admitted to our Endocrinology Department, presenting with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and hypoosmia, and reporting a history of rickets in early childhood and a rapid growth pattern. On admission, his main complaints were back-pain and a decreased tolerance to physical exercise. The patient gave no family history of hypogonadism or hypoosmia, and his case was assumed to be sporadic KS. On physical examination hypogonadism (micropenis, small testes, no puberty), hypoosmia and severe scoliosis, k

BACKGROUND: Kallmann's syndrome (KS) was first mentioned in 1944 as an association of anosmia and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. Causes are multiple genetic defects the most common of which is the x-linked KS appearing mostly in men. However, autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive forms have also been described.
PATIENT: We present a case of KS with normosmia (male, 39 years of age). All symptoms of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism were present.
RESULTS: Psychophysical olfactory testing revealed left-sided anosmia with right-sided normosmia which was confirmed by electrophysiological measur

Kallmann syndrome and schizophrenia share several clinical features, including dysfunctional olfactory ability, hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism, an excess of affected males, and psychiatric presentation. Because of this congruence, it has been proposed that up to 70% of male schizophrenics might have mutations affecting the function or expression of the gene mutated in Kallmann syndrome, KAL-X. We identified and studied 9 unrelated males with schizophrenia (as defined by DSM-IIIR criteria) who also have severe anosmia (first percentile of normal range) and low sex drive (seventh percentile of t

Gonadal and olfactory features of Kallmann's syndrome, usually considered to be inherited as an X-linked recessive trait, were found in a father and son who both had cryptorchidism, hypogonadism, and hyposmia. The father's fertility had been induced with chorionic gonadotropin, leading to the birth of three children. Olfactory and gonadal functions were normal in the mother and two siblings. The father had low basal plasma testosterone and subnormal follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) response to luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LH-RH). The affected son and his healthy brother were prepub

SUMMARY: The underlying genetic drivers of Kallmann syndrome, a rare genetic disorder characterized by anosmia and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism due to impairment in the development of olfactory axons and in the migration of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GNRH)-producing neurons during embryonic development, remain largely unknown. SOX10, a key transcription factor involved in the development of neural crest cells and established as one of the causative genes of Waardenburg syndrome, has been shown to be a causative gene of Kallmann syndrome. A 17-year-old male patient, who was diagnosed with

BACKGROUND: Kallmann syndrome (KS) is a rare developmental disorder. Our previous metabolomics work showed substantial changes in linoleic acid and glycerophospholipid metabolism in KS. Here, we performed targeted lipidomics to further identify the differential lipid species in KS.
METHODS: Twenty-one patients with KS (treatment group) and twenty-two age-matched healthy controls (HC, control group) were enrolled. Seminal plasma samples and medical records were collected. Targeted lipidomics analysis of these samples was performed using ultraperformance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of

The proper development and coordination of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis are essential for normal reproductive competence. The key factor that regulates the function of the HPG axis is gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH). Timely release of GnRH is critical for the onset of puberty and subsequent sexual maturation. Misregulation in this system can result in delayed or absent puberty and infertility. Congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (CHH) and Kallmann syndrome (KS) are genetic disorders that are rooted in a GnRH deficiency but often accompanied by a variety of non-repr

BACKGROUND: The majority of Kallmann patients have anosmia or hyposmia. This is how the disease is diagnosed. Some of them don't have such complaints but olfactory dysfunction is diagnosed via olfactometry. Nowadays there is the lack of information about correlation between olfactometry results and subjective complaints. Correlation between olfactory bulbs size and olfactory dysfunction has been little studied.
AIM: To explore olfactory bulb size and olfactory function in patients with congenital isolated hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. To correlate olfactory bulb sizes and smell test scores.

Kallmann syndrome (KS) is a rare hereditary disease with high phenotypic and genetic heterogeneity. Congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and hyposmia/anosmia are the two major characterized phenotypes of KS. Besides, mirror movements, dental agenesis, digital bone abnormalities, unilateral renal agenesis, midline facial defects, hearing loss, and eye movement abnormalities can also be observed in KS patients. Because of the phenotypic heterogeneity, genetic diagnosis become increasingly valuable to distinguish KS from other disorders including normosmic congenital hypogonadotropic hypogona

One of the challenging issues in patients with complex problems is that the various diseases and their treatment can influence each other and present unusual hurdles in management. We investigated one such complex case. A 34-year-old XY male presented with azoospermia, detected on semen analysis for pre-orchidectomy sperm banking. He had a 20-year history of gender dysphoria and bilateral breast swelling. The patient suffered a deep vein thrombosis at the age of 19 years. Examination confirmed clinical features of Kallmann syndrome including unilateral cryptorchidism, micropenis, congenital an

Kallmann syndrome (KS) is a genetic disorder characterized by the simultaneous occurrence of idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (IHH) and anosmia. Here, we present 3 cases of KS with detailed description. In Case 1, testicular morphology was examined by testicular biopsy, and Leydig cells were examined by immunohistochemistry using antibodies against Ad4BP/SF1. Contrary to our predictions, the present study revealed the presence of Leydig cells in the testis. Testicular morphology in the patients with KS is more varied than expected, and further investigation is required to elucidate hor

Kallmann syndrome is characterized by hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism and anosmia. The syndrome can be caused by mutations in several genes, but the X-linked form is caused by mutation in the Kallmann syndrome 1 (KAL1). KAL1 plays a critical role in gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neuronal migration that is essential for the normal development of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Interestingly, KAL1 appears to be missing from the rodent X, and no orthologue has been detected as yet. We investigated KAL1 during development and in adults of an Australian marsupial, the tammar wallaby

Kallmann syndrome is a genetic disorder with the hallmarks of anosmia and hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism. It has a male preponderance. With the elucidation of the genetic pathways involved, affected females and inheritance patterns are becoming more clearly identified. It is an eminently treatable disorder, but it must first be recognized by the physician. With treatment, favorable reproductive outcomes can be attained in addition to maturation of secondary sex characteristics.

A 16-year-old boy with a diagnosis of bilateral cryptorchidism was referred for preoperative evaluation. He had diminished hearing and difficulty in vision since birth, with inattentiveness, poor school performance and delayed milestones. He was previously operated on for cleft lip. General survey revealed bilateral short fourth metacarpals and an operative scar mark over the left nostril and upper lip. He had a micropenis, small soft testes with anosmia, and sensory-motor deafness. The hormonal assay was consistent with hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain a
