Diversity of Moraxella spp. strains recovered from infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis cases in Uruguay.

BACKGROUND: Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) is the most common ocular disease that affects cattle throughout the world and it has a very significant economic impact. IBK is caused by members of the genus Moraxella and therapeutic and preventive measures have shown limited success. Vaccines, most of them chemically inactivated bacterins, generally induce a limited protection. METHODOLOGY: In this study, the genetic diversity of Uruguayan clinical Moraxella bovis and Moraxella bovoculi isolates was assessed by RAPD-PCR, ERIC-PCR and BOX-PCR fingerprinting. Also, antibiotic resistan

Putative quantitative trait loci associated with the probability of contracting infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis.

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis, also known as pinkeye, is an economically important disease in cattle. The objective of this study was to detect QTL associated with infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis in offspring from a Brahman x Hereford sire. The sire was mated to Hereford, Angus, and F1 cows to produce 288 offspring in 1994 and mated to MARC III ((1/4) Hereford, (1/4) Angus, (1/4) Red Poll, and (1/4) Pinzgauer) cows in 1996 to produce 259 offspring (547 animals total). Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis was diagnosed by physical examination in 36 animals of the family. Recor

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis in cattle vaccinated and medicated against Moraxella bovis before parturition.

A vaccination and prophylactic treatment study for infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) was conducted on selection line purebred Hereford and recombination mixed-breed cattle. In February, prepartum cows were allotted to 4 groups: group 1--mixed-breed cows vaccinated with a formalin-killed trivalent Moraxella bovis bacterin; group 2--Hereford cows vaccinated and treated with tylosin; group 3--Hereford cows treated with tylosin; and group 4--mixed-breed cows neither vaccinated nor treated (controls). Groups 2 and 3 were pastured together greater than 3 km for other cattle; cattle added

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis: effects of vaccination on Moraxella bovis carrier state in cattle.

A study was conducted to determine whether vaccination of cattle while they were undergoing an acute episode of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK), would cause vaccinated cattle to abort Moraxella bovis infection sooner than nonvaccinated cattle. Fourteen calves were allotted into two groups of seven calves each, and the eyes of each calf were exposed to a virulent culture of M bovis. Twenty days after calves were infected and showing signs of IBK, seven calves were vaccinated with M bovis pilus vaccine made from the exposure strain. Ocular and nasal discharges were collected and exa

[Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) in cows, clinical and lab review at four farms].

After several reports to the GD (Dutch Animal Health Service) from practitioners in The Netherlands concerning serious Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) in dairy herds during summer and autumn 2003, the GD has carried out a pilot-study to determine the most responsible agent. This pilot was thought to be important because of the painfulness of the illness and problems like, (for the farmer) an intensive and difficult therapy. Also the report of a Chlamydophilae infection causing IBK in a dairy herd in the UK prompted to this study. The most frequently isolated infectious agent in ou

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis: evidence for genetic modulation of resistance in purebred Hereford cattle.

A vaccination study was conducted in a herd of purebred Hereford cattle representing 4 selection (genetic) lines. For each of 2 years, half of the cattle were vaccinated with a pilus-enriched Moraxella bovis bacterin. Cows were vaccinated before parturition, and calves were vaccinated at 2 to 3 months of age. None of the cattle was vaccinated for 1 year preceding and 1 year after the 2 years in which cattle were vaccinated. There was a significantly (P less than 0.05) lower percentage of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) in calves during years cattle were vaccinated than during year

To compare the immune response elicited by 3 routes of vaccination, 36 calves were randomly allotted to 4 groups of 9 calves each. Group I was vaccinated subconjunctivally only. Group II was vaccinated concomitantly, both subconjunctivally and in the dewlap. Group III was vaccinated in the dewlap only. Group IV was not vaccinated and served as a virulence control for the Moraxella bovis culture. Calves in groups I, II, and III were given 2 inoculations with 14 days between inoculations. Twenty-one days after the last inoculation, the ventral conjunctival sac of all calves was instilled with ce

Alterations to the bovine bacterial ocular surface microbiome in the context of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis.

BACKGROUND: Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) is a common cause of morbidity in cattle, resulting in significant economic losses. This study aimed to characterize the bovine bacterial ocular surface microbiome (OSM) through conjunctival swab samples from Normal eyes and eyes with naturally acquired, active IBK across populations of cattle using a three-part approach, including bacterial culture, relative abundance (RA, 16 S rRNA gene sequencing), and semi-quantitative random forest modeling (real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)). RESULTS: Conjunctival swab samples were obta

Perceptions and practices of Australian cattle farmers for the treatment of pinkeye (infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis).

Pinkeye or infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis is a globally significant disease and occurs in every state of Australia. Economic loss due to pinkeye can be considerable and it is a major welfare concern, but not all cattle with the disease are treated by farmers. This study was conducted to understand the perceptions and practices of Australian farmers regarding the treatment of pinkeye: factors influencing when farmers treat pinkeye, treatments used and considered effective, and reasons for not treating. Data were gathered using a custom designed online questionnaire. Farmer responses sui

Chlamydia pecorum Associated With an Outbreak of Infectious Keratoconjunctivitis in Semi-domesticated Reindeer in Sweden.

Infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC), the most common ocular disease in ruminants worldwide, has affected semi-domesticated Eurasian reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) for over 100 years, both as individual cases and in outbreaks affecting tens to hundreds of animals. Recurrent IKC outbreaks have been affecting a semi-domesticated reindeer herd in Östra Kikkejaure (Norrbotten county, Sweden) from 2014. The latest episode of these recurrent outbreaks, in winter 2016/2017, was investigated in this study. Clinical findings were in line with previous reports of IKC in semi-domesticated reindee

Molecular and phenotypic analysis of Moraxella spp. associated with infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis in Uruguay.

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) is a common ocular disease of cattle, which is generally thought to be caused by Moraxella bovis. However, a recently characterized Moraxella, M. bovoculi, has been isolated from animals with IBK. The aim of this study was to identify and characterize strains of Moraxella spp. obtained from IBK cases in different geographic locations within Uruguay. Ribosomal gene sequencing indicated that there were two groups of isolates that showed homology with either M. bovis or M. bovoculi. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed the presence of two species as the iso

Occurrence, quantification, and genotyping of Mycoplasma conjunctivae in wild Caprinae with and without infectious keratoconjunctivitis.

Mycoplasma conjunctivae, the causative agent of infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC), was recently detected in asymptomatic Alpine ibex (Capra ibex ibex). This suggested that an external source of infection may not be required for an IKC outbreak in wildlife but might be initiated by healthy carriers, which contradicted previous serologic investigations in chamois. Our aims were to 1) assess the prevalence of M. conjunctivae among asymptomatic ibex and Alpine chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra rupicapra) and its frequency in IKC-affected animals, 2) determine mycoplasma loads in different disease s

Effectiveness of a cytolysin-enriched vaccine for protection of cattle against infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the immunogenicity of a Moraxella bovis cytolysin-enriched vaccine for prevention of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK). ANIMALS: 104 mixed-breed beef calves ranging between 4 and 8 months of age. PROCEDURE: Vaccines were prepared by the diafiltration of broth culture supernatant from hemolytic M bovis or sterile media. The diafiltered retentate was combined with Quil A adjuvant. Calves were randomly assigned to receive either the cytolysin vaccine (n = 35) or, as controls, adjuvant (35) or saline (0.9% NaCl) solution (34). Eyes of all calves were examined w

The identification of Mycoplasma conjunctivae as an aetiological agent of infectious keratoconjunctivitis of sheep in South Africa.

Ovine keratoconjunctivitis was successfully reproduced in lambs under 1 year of age, in four separate transmission trials, by the use of mycoplasma isolates obtained from field outbreaks of ovine infectious keratoconjunctivitis. Mycoplasma isolates used in one of these trials, were identified as M. conjunctivae by means of immunofluorescence. Mycoplasma was isolated from approximately 87% of field cases examined. Branhamella ovis was isolated from 22% of field cases examined. No Chlamydia sp. or viruses were isolated from any of the outbreaks.

A Field Trial of a Pilated Moraxella bovis Bacterin for the Prevention of Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis.

Two field trials were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of a Moraxella bovis bacterin in the control of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis. The bacterin did not affect the incidence of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis in either trial but did appear to reduce the severity of lesions, treatments required and withdrawals from pasture required in one trial. Possible reasons for the apparently contradictory results are offered. It is suggested that the bacterin may be of some value when used in conjunction with other preventive measures.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of the antibiotic treatment for infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis: an update.

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) is a common and important disease of calves. Without effective vaccines, antibiotic therapy is often implemented to minimize the impact of IBK. This review updates a previously published systematic review regarding comparative efficacy for antibiotic treatments of IBK. Available years of Centre for Biosciences and Agriculture International and MEDLINE databases were searched, including non-English results. Also searched were the American Association of Bovine Practitioners and World Buiatrics Congress conference proceedings from 1996 to 2016, review
