Variation of corticospinal excitability during kinesthetic illusion induced by musculotendinous vibration.

Despite being studied for more than 50 years, the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying vibration (VIB)-induced kinesthetic illusions are still unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate how corticospinal excitability tested by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is modulated during VIB-induced illusions. Twenty healthy adults received vibration over wrist flexor muscles (80 Hz, 1 mm, 10 s). TMS was applied over the primary motor cortex representation of wrist extensors at 120% of resting motor threshold in four random conditions (10 trials/condition): baseline (without VIB), 1 s

Motor imagery training: Kinesthetic imagery strategy and inferior parietal fMRI activation.

Motor imagery (MI) is the mental simulation of action frequently used by professionals in different fields. However, with respect to performance, well-controlled functional imaging studies on MI training are sparse. We investigated changes in fMRI representation going along with performance changes of a finger sequence (error and velocity) after MI training in 48 healthy young volunteers. Before training, we tested the vividness of kinesthetic and visual imagery. During tests, participants were instructed to move or to imagine moving the fingers of the right hand in a specific order. During MI

Foot-ground interaction during upright standing in children with Down syndrome.

This study aimed to quantitatively characterize the main foot-ground contact parameters during static upright standing and to assess foot evolution with increasing age in young individuals affected by Down syndrome (DS). To this end, 99 children with DS of mean age 9.7 (1.7) were tested using a pressure sensitive mat, and the raw data were processed to extract information about overall and rearfoot, midfoot and forefoot contact area, Arch Index (AI) and average contact pressure. The values obtained were then compared with those calculated from a sample of age- and gender-matched participants (

Abnormal vibration-induced illusion of movement in idiopathic focal dystonia: an endophenotypic marker?

The frequency of symptomatic dystonia in relatives of patients with idiopathic focal dystonia (IFD) is higher than expected from epidemiologic studies implying that genetic factors may be involved. Perception of the vibration-induced illusion of movement (VIIM) is subnormal in patients with IFD compared with healthy volunteers and the abnormality corrects with volitional fatigue of the vibrated arm. The aim of the study was to establish the heritability of the abnormality of VIIM. The perception of illusion of movement elicited by vibration of the biceps brachii tendon before and after fatigue

Kinesthetic sense of the shoulder in patients with impingement syndrome.

A proprioceptive deficit is an important determinant of disability in various shoulder disorders, such as instability and osteoarthrosis. In 15 patients with impingement syndrome stage II (Neer 1983), who were treated by arthroscopic subacromial decompression, we measured movement sense by determining threshold levels for the perception of motion of the shoulder. The patients were placed in a specially designed chair allowing continuous passive motion of the shoulder joint, while avoiding cutaneous, auditory and visual stimuli. To assess movement detection thresholds, passive abduction movemen

Spatial performance of unilateral vestibular defective patients in nonvisual versus visual navigation.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of unilateral vestibular neurotomy on humans ability to perform navigation tasks. These tasks provided self-motion feedback by way of either locomotor activity only (nonvisual navigation or "locomotor task") or visual motion cues only (visually simulated navigation or "visual task"). After exploration of an environment in which 4 locations were marked by different objects, subjects attempted to navigate to those locations either by reproducing the same paths as those followed during exploration, by reversing routes, or by making spatial

Evaluation of kinesthetic deficits indicative of balance control in gymnasts with unilateral chronic ankle sprains.

If ankle proprioception can be determined to be impaired, then treatment can be more specifically directed toward correcting the proprioceptive deficit, thereby improving functional ability. The purpose of this study was to determine if collegiate level gymnasts with unilateral, multiple ankle sprains (ie., chronic ankle sprains) had decreased ability to detect passive plantar flexion of the ankle (ie., decreased ankle proprioception) and to determine if balance deficits existed during one-legged stance. Eleven gymnasts participated in 30 passive movement trials (15 movement and 15 nonmovement

Perceptual and motor effects of agonist-antagonist muscle vibration in man.

Perceptual and motor effects of vibration applied simultaneously to the distal tendons of the Biceps and Triceps muscles, in isometric conditions and without sight of the stimulated arm, have been studied in human volunteers. Motor effects, measured by surface EMG, are inexistent when the flexor and extensor muscles are simultaneously vibrated at the same frequency. However, EMG activity appears in the muscle being vibrated at the lower frequency when simultaneous vibration is applied at different frequencies. The sensations felt by the subjects were reproduced by the nonvibrated arm and recor

Specific spatial defect in a child with septo-optic dysplasia.

A blind girl with septo-optic dysplasia was compared with a blind, age-matched control on three spatial tests. Previous observations had suggested a specific spatial learning disorder. Results of the tests showed good verbal intelligence but severe impairment of topographical orientation, route-learning and kinaesthetic memory. It is argued that these dysfunctions were a direct consequence of the malformation syndrome, and could not be accounted for by factors such as sex or congenital blindness.

[Sex character of human movement answers in the Rorschach test in transsexual and transvestite patients].

As a complement to a former study on the sexual character of the kinaesthetic human movement responses in the Rorschach tests of healthy and neurotic men and women, the same characteristic was investigated in Rorschach records of transsexuals and transvestites from the Psychiatric Out-Patient Department of the University Hospital of Zurich. In none of these groups was the distribution of masculine, feminine and neuter movement responses congruent with that in one of the preceding groups. The anatomically male transsexuals who desired a change of sex to female (TXmw) gave considerably more inte

HapticGiant: A Novel Very Large Kinesthetic Haptic Interface With Hierarchical Force Control.

Research in virtual reality and haptic technologies has consistently aimed to enhance immersion. While advanced head-mounted displays are now commercially available, kinesthetic haptic interfaces still face challenges such as limited workspaces, insufficient degrees of freedom, and kinematics not matching the human arm. In this paper, we present HapticGiant, a novel large-scale kinesthetic haptic interface designed to match the properties of the human arm as closely as possible and to facilitate natural user locomotion while providing full haptic feedback. The interface incorporates a novel ad

The role of parietal cortex in awareness of self-generated movements: a transcranial magnetic stimulation study.

Awareness of self-generated movements arises from comparing motor plans, and the accompanying (hypothetical) efference copy, with the visual and proprioceptive consequences of movement. Here we used repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to investigate the role of a posterior region in the superior parietal lobule (SPL) in this process. Nine healthy volunteers performed a finger extension actively and passively while wearing a CyberGlove; the glove recorded these (actual) finger movements and used this information in real time to move a virtual hand displayed on a computer screen.

Kinesthetic alexia due to left parietal lobe lesions.

To investigate the neuropsychological mechanisms of kinesthetic alexia, we asked 7 patients who showed kinesthetic alexia with preserved visual reading after damage to the left parietal region to perform tasks consisting of kinesthetic written reproduction (writing down the same letter as the kinesthetic stimulus), kinesthetic reading aloud, visual written reproduction (copying letters), and visual reading aloud of hiragana (Japanese phonograms). We compared the performance in these tasks and the lesion sites in each patient. The results suggested that deficits in any one of the following func

A motion sickness maximum around the 0.2 Hz frequency range of horizontal translational oscillation.

BACKGROUND: Low frequency translational oscillation can provoke motion sickness in land vehicles, ships and aircraft. Although controlled motion experiments indicate a progressive increase in nauseogenicity as frequency decreases toward 0.2 Hz, few data are available on the existence of a definite maximum nauseogenic potential of motion around 0.2 Hz, or decreased nauseogenicity below this frequency. HYPOTHESIS: Nauseogenicity should be maximal around 0.2 Hz. METHODS: We selected 12 subjects for high motion sickness susceptibility, and they were exposed to horizontal sinusoidal motion (1.0 m

Relations between biased tonicity of the body and vertical judgement in poststroke hemiplegic persons.

The influence of muscular tension upon visual vertical judgement in a standing posture was investigated in 16 hemiplegic persons and 12 normal elderly persons. The normal elderly group showed that their judgements of verticality were accurate and stable. In hemiplegic persons, judgements were displaced opposite to the side in which there was high tension in the body. Differences between groups in body tension and the side to which judgement was displaced were significant. The peculiar judgement errors made by hemiplegic persons are thus an overcorrection for tonicity. It was related to one's o

Locomotion of the hindlimbs after neurectomy of ankle flexors in intact and spinal cats: model for the study of locomotor plasticity.

To study the potential plasticity of locomotor networks in the spinal cord, an important issue for locomotor rehabilitation after spinal injuries, we have investigated the locomotor performance of cats before and after a unilateral denervation of the ankle flexors tibialis anterior (TA) and extensor digitorum longus (EDL) both in cats with intact spinal cord and after spinalization. The effects of the inactivation of the ankle flexors were studied in three cats with intact spinal cord during periods of 4-7 wk. Cats adapted their locomotor performance very rapidly within a few days so that the

Midway through the experiment, the key corresponding to the isolated letter was physically switched with another key on the keyboard, and subjects typed the letter in its new location (for 140 trials). Motion sickness susceptibility and the utilisation of visual and otolithic information for orientation.

Movement of large portions of the visual field can induce a static observer to experience illusory self-motion, changes in perceived orientation and motion sickness. Two experiments were performed to determine whether susceptibility to motion sickness might be related to an inability to ignore misleading visual information for orientation, measured here in terms of the magnitude of the apparent tilt of the vertical induced by rotation of the visual field about the line of sight. Significant and additive effects of sex and motion sickness susceptibility were demonstrated. Females susceptible to
