BACKGROUND: Kingella kingae has been increasingly identified in patients with osteoarticular infections. Our main objective was to evaluate the association between carriage of K. kingae in the oropharynx of preschool children and osteoarticular infections.
METHODS: We conducted this prospective case-control study in 2 tertiary care pediatric hospitals (Canada and Switzerland) between 2014 and 2016. Potential cases were children aged 6 to 48 months with a presumptive diagnosis of osteoarticular infection according to the treating emergency physician. Confirmed cases were those with diagnosis o

BACKGROUND: The bacterium Kingella kingae may be an under-recognized cause of septic arthritis in Canadian children because it is difficult to grow in culture and best detected using molecular methods.
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether K kingae is present in culture-negative joint fluid specimens from children in eastern Ontario using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) detection methods.
METHODS: K kingae PCR testing was performed using residual bacterial culture-negative joint fluid collected from 2010 to 2013 at a children's hospital in Ottawa, Ontario. The clinical features of children with i

Kingella kingae is the leading cause of osteoarticular infections in children under 4 years, with septic arthritis (SA) being the most common manifestation. The present study aimed to define the clinical and biological characteristics of SA of the hip and of the knee caused by K. kingae , and, secondarily, identify whether there were significant differences between them; this with the objective to assess if different possible strategies of diagnosis and treatment could be applied to different joints. Medical records of 100 children (50 hips, 50 knees) with confirmed K. kingae SA were analyzed,

INTRODUCTION: Membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN) is a rare pattern of glomerular injury that may be immune complex-mediated (ICM), most often secondary to infections, autoimmune disorders, or hematologic or less often solid tumor malignancies. Infections with Haemophilus, Aggregatibacter, Cardiobacterium, Eikenella, Kingella (HACEK) organisms are a well-known but rare cause of infective endocarditis (IE), which may be difficult to detect. Bacterial infections are more common in patients with cirrhosis, which may complicate the interpretation of clinical findings.

INTRODUCTION: Proximal femur fractures in below-knee amputees pose significant surgical challenges due to difficulties in positioning and stabilizing the residual limb for fracture reduction. In the current literature, there is no consensus on the optimal management strategy, but the inverted boot positioning method seems to be an adequate and non-invasive technique. However, in our case, this method was not possible due to limited knee flexion, so we describe our technique and compare the different modalities described in the literature, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages.

Kingella kingae is a Gram-negative coccobacillus belonging to the Neisseriaceae family. In children less than 4 years old, K. kingae invasive infection can induce septic arthritis and osteomyelitis, and more rarely endocarditis, meningitis, ocular infections, and pneumonia. In adults, it may be a cause of endocarditis. To date, K. kingae acute chorioamnionitis (AC) leading to preterm rupture of membranes (PPROM) and miscarriage has never been reported. Herein, we describe a case of intrauterine fetal death (IUFD) at 22 weeks' gestation due to K. kingae infection occurred in a patient affected

BACKGROUND: We aimed to evaluate the relevance of dual target real-time polymerase chain (PCR) assays targeting the rtxA and cpn60 genes of the paediatric pathogen Kingella kingae. We also studied for the first time the clinical and epidemiological features of K. kingae infections in a Danish population.
METHOD: Children with K. kingae-positive cultures were identified from 11,477 children and 86 children younger than 16 years old from whom blood cultures and joint fluid cultures were obtained between January 2010 and November 2016. Results were then compared to microbiological results obtain

BACKGROUND: Acute septic arthritis (SA) still remains a challenge with significant worldwide morbidity. In recent years, Kingella kingae has emerged and treatment regimens have become shorter. We aim to analyze trends in SA etiology and management and to identify risk factors for complications.
METHODS: Longitudinal observational, single center study of children (<18 years old) with SA admitted to a tertiary care pediatric hospital, from 2003 to 2018, in 2 cohorts, before and after implementation of nucleic acid amplification assays (2014). Clinical, treatment and disease progression data wer

In children under 4, septic arthritis of the hip (SAH) caused by Kingella kingae (SAH-KK) can be misdiagnosed, as it does not meet classic septic joint criteria (fever > 38.5°, pain, limited range of motion, and inability to bear weight). The objective of this study was to report clinical and paraclinical characteristics in a large cohort of children with confirmed SAH-KK and to evaluate the reliability of the Kocher (KC) and Caird criteria (CC) in predicting SAH-KK. Medical records of 140 children with confirmed SAH-KK were collected. Data on sex, age, temperature on admission, weight-bearing

BACKGROUND: Improvements in blood culture techniques and molecular-based diagnostics have led to increased recognition of Kingella kingae as an invasive human pathogen causing bacteremia, septic arthritis, osteomyelitis and endocarditis in young children. Serious disease and potentially life-threatening complications of infection due to K. kingae necessitate timely identification and appropriate antimicrobial therapy. Ceftaroline is a fifth-generation broad spectrum cephalosporin that possesses activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive pathogens similar to third-generation cephalosporin

We report the investigation methods for the diagnosis of an epidemic and culture-negative Kingella kingae endocarditis complicating a severe outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease in a childcare center. The diagnosis was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction testing performed from cardiac tissue. Our findings argue for the systematic investigation of K. kingae outbreaks by using molecular tools in such context.

BACKGROUND: Outbreaks of invasive Kingella kingae infections recently emerged as a new public health concern in daycare centers in Europe, USA and Israel. Despite this, no trigger factor has been yet identified, preventing the setting up of rational measures of control and prevention. We report an outbreak of K. kingae infections associated with hand, foot and mouth disease/herpangina outbreak, and we define the research and policy priorities.
METHODS: From April 22 to May 07, 2013, 5 toddlers presented successive osteo-articular infections in a daycare center in Marseille, France. Real-time

BACKGROUND: The use of universal 16S rDNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has recently shown that the place of Kingella kingae in osteoarticular infections (OAI) in young children has been underestimated, but this technique is not the most sensitive or the most rapid method for molecular diagnosis. We developed a specific real-time PCR method to detect K. kingae DNA and applied it to the etiologic diagnosis of OAI.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: All children admitted to a pediatric unit for OAI between January 2004 and December 2005 were enrolled in this prospective study. Culture-negative osteoarticu

BACKGROUND: Pediatric spondylodiscitis is a rare condition, primarily affecting children aged 6-48 months. Kingella kingae is the leading pathogen in this age group, often presenting with mild or atypical features, which delay diagnosis.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed pediatric spondylodiscitis cases discharged from our hospital between January 2010 and May 2026, identifying those attributable to K. kingae. In parallel, we conducted a systematic literature review using PubMed/MEDLINE and Embase (2000-2025) to identify pediatric cases confirmed by culture, nucleic acid amplification or m

Actinomyces and HACEK (Haemophilus, Aggregatibacter, Cardiobacterium, Eikenella, and Kingella) organisms are part of the oral microbiome and rarely affect the central nervous system (CNS). CNS infections with these agents can be caused by contiguous or hematogenous spread. We present a case of a 25-year-old immunocompetent male who presented with a one-week history of progressively worsening generalized headaches, photophobia, nausea, and vomiting. Despite a normal physical exam and the absence of leukocytosis, head imaging showed a right frontal lobe abscess. The patient was started empirical

Kingella kingae causes bacteremia, endocarditis, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, meningitis, spondylodiscitis, and lower respiratory tract infections in pediatric patients. Usually it demonstrates disease after inflammation of mouth, lips or infections of the upper respiratory tract. To date, therapeutic targets in this bacterium remain unexplored. We have utilized a battery of bioinformatics tools to mine these targets in this study. Core genes were initially inferred from 55 genomes of K. kingae and 39 therapeutic targets were mined using an in-house pipeline. We selected aroG product (KDPG

Kingella negevensis belongs to the Neisseriaceae family. It is implied that it has significant virulence potential due to RTX toxin production, which can cause hemolysis. It usually colonizes the orophayrynx of pediatric population, along with Kingella kingae but has also been isolated from vagina. Todate no report on its drug targets is present, therefore putative therapeutic targets were identified from its genomic sequence data. Traditional Chinese (n > 36,000) and Indian medicinal compounds (n > 2000) were then screened against its pyridoxine 5'-phosphate synthase, a vital therapeutic targ

Inoculation of blood culture vials with joint fluid samples has revealed the important pathogenic role of Kingella kingae in pediatric arthritis. However, recent studies based on broad-range 16S ribosomal DNA PCR and real-time PCR without a probe suggest that conventional methods remain suboptimal. We developed a new real-time PCR method with a probe that is highly specific for K. kingae and applied it to joint fluid samples collected from 89 children with suspected arthritis admitted to our institution during a 2-year period. Real-time PCR was also applied to blood samples obtained before sur
