Pain Management and Opioid Therapy: Persistent Knowledge Gaps Among Primary Care Providers.

INTRODUCTION: Given the opioid epidemic in the US, it is vital that clinicians who prescribe opioids for pain management to do so in an evidence-based manner, eg considering all pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic options, assessing risk of opioid use disorder prior to initiating opioids. Continuing education regarding the evidence-based prescribing of opioids is now required for US healthcare providers who prescribe opioids. A "blueprint" of the content to be included in continuing education programs was developed by the US Food and Drug Administration and updated in 2018. METHODS: To unders

Association between asthma self-management knowledge and asthma control in the elderly.

BACKGROUND: Considerable evidence points to the importance of patient education in achieving better asthma control. However, little is known about the effect of older adults' asthma knowledge on asthma control. OBJECTIVE: To identify the relation between asthma self-management knowledge and short-term asthma control in older adults. METHODS: The study included 82 patients with asthma undergoing usual asthma care who were interviewed by the same trained allergist. At the same time, the authors conducted an asthma knowledge questionnaire, an Asthma Control Test, skin prick testing, spirometry,

BACKGROUND: Food allergy (FA) disproportionately affects communities of color in the United States. However, few studies have evaluated adult-specific disparities in FA. OBJECTIVE: To explore differences in FA prevalence, knowledge, and care among US adults. METHODS: A survey of adults with FA which collected data on self-reported allergens, anaphylaxis knowledge, epinephrine autoinjector (EAI) prescriptions, and health care utilization. Outcomes were compared by race/ethnicity, insurance type, and geographic region. RESULTS: Among the 1006 survey respondents, FA rates to common allergens d

Knowledge, attitude and practice of rehabilitation management of the caregivers of pediatric patients with hemiplegia.

This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of caregivers managing rehabilitation for pediatric hemiplegia patients. Conducted at our hospital from January 25 to July 20, 2024, self-developed questionnaires were used to evaluate KAP scores among caregivers and compare demographic factors. Spearman correlation analysis explored relationships between variables, and structural equation modeling (SEM) examined direct effects. A total of 547 valid questionnaires were analyzed, with 71.48% female respondents and 90.86% parents of pediatric patients. The mean KAP scores wer

Knowledge, attitudes, and practices on anthrax in selected game management areas in Zambia.

In this study, we investigated anthrax, a zoonotic disease, at the human-wildlife-livestock interface in Zambia, focusing on Simalaha Conservancy, Blue Lagoon, and Lochinvar National Parks. These areas represent key points where illegal wildlife trade and anthrax risk coexist. Although anthrax remains endemic in Zambia, there is limited data on community knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAPs) related to anthrax transmission and the role of wildlife trade value chains in its spread and maintenance. Therefore, we examined how these community KAPs influence anthrax transmission through the il

Simulation to improve trainee knowledge and comfort in managing maternal cardiac arrest.

BACKGROUND: Maternal cardiac arrest is a rare outcome, and thus there are limited opportunities for specialists in obstetrics and gynecology to acquire the skills required to respond to it through routine clinical practice. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate gaps in medical education in maternal cardiac arrest and whether a simulation-based training program improves resident knowledge and comfort in the diagnosis and treatment of maternal cardiac arrest. STUDY DESIGN: A 2-hour training for obstetrics and gynecology residents at an academic medical center was conducted, consisting of a d

Hepatoprotective agents in the management of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy: current knowledge and prospects.

Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is characterized by unexplained distressing pruritus in the mother and poses significant risk to the fetus of perinatal mortality. Occurring in the second and third trimester, the serum bile acid and aminotransferase are usually elevated in ICP patients. Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) is the first line drug for ICP but the effectiveness for hepatoprotection is to a certain extent. In ICP patients with severe liver damage, combination use of hepatoprotective agents with UDCA is not uncommon. Herein, we reviewed the current clinical evidence on applicatio

Evaluation of the knowledge of hematologists about the management of infectious complications in hematologic patients.

INTRODUCTION: Infection is a serious complication among patients with hematologic malignancies (HMs) and in hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) recipients. In most centers, the management of these complications is provided by the hematologist in person, thus demanding a knowledge of basic aspects of infection. METHODS: To evaluate the knowledge of the hematologist on infections, we invited clinicians to answer two questionnaires with 20 multiple-choice questions covering epidemiology, prophylaxis, diagnosis and treatment of infection in patients with HMs and HCT. RESULTS: We obtained 289 ans
