Physical and dental manifestations of oral-facial-digital syndrome type I.

Oral-facial-digital (OFD) syndrome is the collective name of a group of rare inherited syndromes characterized by malformations of the face, oral cavity, hands and feet. OFD syndrome type I, also known as the Papillon-League-Psaume syndrome warrants our attention because early diagnosis from an odontologic viewpoint will minimize the sequalae of developing physical and dental abnormalities. The present article highlights the clinical as well as the radiographic findings and the treatment that was done of a 10-year-old girl child diagnosed with OFD I.

[Vulvoperineoplasty].

Vulvoperineoplasty is a surgical operation consisting of: (1) wide cleavage of the posterior vaginal wall, as in posterior colpoperineorrhaphy; (2) excision of a triangular segment of perineal skin, the summit of which touches the margin of the anus; (3) full exposure of the perineal central fibrous core and reduction of its relief by radial incisions and digital dissection; (4) lowering and eversion of a posterior vaginal flap with good blood supply in order to reconstruct the fourchette of the enlarged vaginal opening. This technique is applicable not only to congenital or acquired vulvar st

Median diastema: Prevalence, novel classification, and evidence-based investigation.

BACKGROUND: Maxillary midline diastema (MMD) is a gap between the maxillary central incisors, posing cosmetic and psychosocial concerns for most patients. MMD results from multifactorial causes, including labial frenum, microdontia, genetics, and various oral habits. The purpose of this article was to review MMD, analyze its prevalence, describe a new shape-based classification, and identify potential causes with a focus on evidence-based practice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional descriptive study utilized orthodontic clinical records of Saudi adults aged 18-30 years who had not s

[Maxillary central diastema. A case study].

A case is presented with loss of two maxillary central incisors in a 12 year old girl due to the use of elastics around the teeth to close a median diastema. The patients complaint was an increased mobility of these teeth. She presented a Class I malocclusion and a supraposition of the upper central incisors. There was however an extreme periodontal destruction, as a consequence of which the central incisors had to be extracted. In connection with this case report considerations are made concerning the normal development of the dentition and the need for orthodontic treatment of a median diast

[Median cleft of the lower lip. Apropos of a case].

The authors report a case of median cleft of the lower lip and mandible. This is rare malformation (60 cases published in the literature) with anomalies of the tongue and sometimes midline cervical cord. Cleft of the lower lip is repaired early between one and six months, but the correction of mandibular defect by bone graft will be done at the age of ten years. In this way the authors hope to preserve mandibular and teeth growth.

A longitudinal study of isolated gingival recession in the mandibular central incisor region of children aged 6-8 years.

A 2-year longitudinal investigation of isolated gingival recession was undertaken in 42 children aged 6-8 years at the commencement of the study. Gingival inflammation was controlled by supervised tooth brushing or professional plaque control. Mandibular anterior crowding considered to have contributed to the degree of recession was untreated in 11 subjects, while in 13 subjects serial extractions had been undertaken. No attempt was made to correct frenal involvement in those subjects (9) where it might have been considered a contributing etiologic factor. After 2 years, improvement in gingiva

Etiological Factors of the Midline Diastema in Children: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Midline diastema in children is a prevalent developmental entity, and this pathological condition may remain in many children due to various factors. Nonetheless, the evidence on etiological factors of the midline diastema in children is minimal. PURPOSE: To evaluate the etiological factors of midline diastema causes in children below 12 years of age from the published data. METHODS: A literature search was confined to the English language using MeSH terms conferring to PICO format in PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Ovidsp covering the period from January 1960 to December 2019. Root coverage with a modified lateral sliding flap - a case series.

The necessity of surgical root coverage is often encountered in daily clinical practice, mainly because of esthetic reasons. Despite the variety of available surgical techniques, delicate clinical scenarios may require refined surgical therapy approaches. The presented double sliding flap technique is designed to meet the special requirements encountered in the often-fragile incisal mandibular area. This surgical approach combines two laterally repositioned flaps with the dissection of the frenulum, to cover two deep neighboring recessions in the area of the central incisors. Providing that co

Chondroectodermal dysplasia (Ellis-van Creveld syndrome): a case report.

Ellis-van Creveld (EVC) syndrome is a form of skeletal and chondroectodermal dysplasia, occurring with and without systemic involvement. Taurodontism of permanent and primary molars and upper posterior supernumerary teeth are rarely associated with this syndrome. A 5-year-old girl presented with early childhood caries and hypodontia. She had labiogingival adhesion, labiogingival frenulum hypertrophy, accessory labiogingival frenula, and a serrated appearance of the gingiva. She was also short in stature. All major features of chondroectodermal dysplasia were present. EVC syndrome requires mult

Root coverage technique with enamel matrix derivative.

Various periodontal plastic surgical techniques are employed in obtaining root coverage. Recently, the use of an enamel matrix derivative (EMD) has been reported in such treatment. We report 2 cases of root coverage surgery with a coronally positioned flap in combination with EMD (CPF+EMD) and connective tissue graft in combination with EMD (CTG+EMD). Case 1: The patient was a 25-year-old woman referred to Suidobashi Hospital, Tokyo Dental College for root coverage surgery on the lower right first premolar. Gingival recession was classified as Miller Class II, as no alveolar bone loss or loss

Labial dystonia after facial and trigeminal neuropathy controlled with a maxillary splint.

A 27-year-old woman with bruxism suffered a spider bite (Loxosceles rufescens) on the left cheek that caused severe local cellulitis, facial palsy, and painful hyperesthesia over the two lower trigeminal nerve divisions. Facial but not trigeminal neuropathy improved, and she developed a labial dystonia that only corrected while pressing the right medial incisor. A specially designed maxillary splint that continuously pressed it suppressed both dystonia and related spontaneous firing of motor unit potentials in electromyography. Overstimulation of the contralateral trigeminal territory possibly

Association of hypertrophic maxillary frenulum with hypoplastic left heart syndrome.

We report a previously unrecognized association between a hypertrophic frenulum separating the alveolar portion of the maxillary palatine suture with hypoplastic left heart syndrome in one fetus and seven children. A hypertrophic frenulum was not found in 25 pediatric cardiology patients without hypoplastic left heart syndrome. This finding may provide a marker for suspecting hypoplastic left heart syndrome in the neonate.

Correction of Single-Tooth Crossbite in Children: A Report of Three Cases.

Single-tooth anterior dental crossbite is a commonly observed malocclusion in the mixed dentition of children. Early intervention is crucial since malocclusion does not correct itself and can contribute to enamel wear, periodontal disease, and disturbances in temporomandibular joint function. Several treatment methods have been proposed to correct it, including removable appliances and uncomplicated interceptive techniques. This case report shows three pediatric patients diagnosed with single-tooth anterior crossbite. In one case, the crossbite was successfully treated with a Hawley's applianc

Efficacy of diode laser versus conventional scalpel in labial frenectomy: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

High labial frenum attachments may cause diastema, gingival recession, and hygiene difficulties. Conventional scalpel frenectomy is effective but may cause pain and bleeding. This meta-analysis compared the use of a diode laser versus a conventional scalpel for maxillary labial frenectomy, focusing on postoperative pain, swelling, intraoperative bleeding, and operative time. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Embase were searched through September 2025 using MeSH and free-text terms related to "diode laser" and "labial frenectomy." Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) compari

Diode versus CO2 Laser Therapy in the Treatment of High Labial Frenulum Attachment: A Pilot Randomized, Double-Blinded Clinical Trial.

Background: The labial frenula are triangular plicas departing from the alveolar mucosa and attaching themselves at different heights of the gingiva. Sometimes a high attachment can determine a gingival recession. The most suitable surgical resolution is the use of laser devices. The aim of this study was to compare the labial frenulectomy through the use of Diode and CO2 laser techniques in pediatric patients with a high labial frenulum attachment, clarifying at the same time the preventive role of the surgical treatment to avoid further recession. Methods: A pilot randomized, double-blinded
