In vitro screening of lactobacilli with antagonistic activity against Helicobacter pylori from traditionally fermented foods.

Helicobacter pylori may cause stomach diseases such as chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, and gastric cancer, and several studies reported that lactobacilli have inhibitory effects on H. pylori. In this study, 38 Lactobacillus strains were screened for anti-H. pylori activity using in vitro methods, including survivability under the simulated gastric conditions, agar plate diffusion, urease activity, coaggregation, autoaggregation, and hydrocarbon analysis. The results indicate that 2 Lactobacillus strains showed potential anti-H. pylori activity in vitro. Lactobacillus plantarum 18 had the larg

The analysis of Lactobacillus spp. distribution in the vaginal microbiota of Polish women with abnormal Pap smear result.

INTRODUCTION: A healthy vaginal microbiota is represented mainly by Lactobacillus spp. and plays a vital role in maintaining the functional balance in the vaginal environment. Scientists have drawn attention to possible correlations between the vaginal microbiome and gynecological neoplasms. Several recent studies have shown a potential link between the vaginal microbiome and the risk of developing cervical cancer from human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. This study aimed to compare the prevalence and abundance of various lactic acid bacteria species (LABs) in vaginal swabs from healthy contr

Body site-specific micro- and lactobiota in genitourinary infections during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Immunological, metabolic, and hormonal changes occur during pregnancy, which can affect the composition and function of the microbiota in diverse body sites. These changes can influence pregnancy outcomes and the health of the mother and baby. We aimed to characterize the microbiota of pregnant women across various body sites and examine the clinical and population-specific factors associated with its composition. The role of lactobacilli in genitourinary infections during pregnancy was analyzed as well. MATERIAL AND METHODS: One hundred and five pregnant women with gestational ag

A Hippo-thesis: Can bacteria turn back reproductive time?

Fertility declines with age, partly because the endometrium ages alongside the oocyte. In this issue, Li et al. show that Lactobacillus gasseri and its exopolysaccharide reduce endometrial senescence and improve implantation in aged mice. Although senescence markers responded similarly in human endometrial cells, effects on human pregnancy rates remain unclear.

Development of in vitro methods to model the impact of vaginal lactobacilli on Staphylococcus aureus biofilm formation on menstrual cups as well as validation of recommended cleaning directions.

INTRODUCTION: Menstrual cups (MC) are a reusable feminine hygiene product. A recent publication suggested that Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) biofilms can form on MCs which may lead to increased risk of menstrual Toxic Shock Syndrome (mTSS). Additionally, there is concern that buildup of residual menses may contribute to microbial growth and biofilm formation further increasing mTSS risk. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of in vitro tests were utilized to determine if S. aureus biofilm could form on MC in the presence of the keystone species Lactobacillus after 12 h of incubation. The

Pathogenesis and in vivo interactions of human Streptococcus agalactiae isolates in the Galleria mellonella invertebrate model.

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a gram positive bacterium colonizing the gastrointestinal and urogenital tracts in humans. However under certain conditions GBS invades leading to severe infections in neonates, pregnant women, immunocompromised patients and the elderly people. The precise mechanisms involved in the transition from colonizer to pathogen remain to be elucidated, however it has been suggested that environmental determinants may regulate gene expression resulting in GBS invasion. We have assessed the potential of the moth Galleria mellonella as a model to study the in vivo virulence

Dysbiosis of the rat vagina is efficiently rescued by vaginal microbiota transplantation or probiotic combination.

Vaginal dysbiosis is characterised by a disturbed vaginal microbiota and is associated with various gynaecological diseases. Owing to its high recurrence rate, there is an urgent need for the development of effective therapeutic agents. In the present study, a vaginal dysbiosis model was developed to study the effect of vaginal microbiota transplantation (VMT) or probiotic combination (containing Lactobacillus helveticus, Lactobacillus crispatus, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus gasseri and Lactobacillus salivarius) on vaginal dysbiosis. Our results indicated that VMT or probiotic comb

An exploratory pilot study evaluating the supplementation of standard antibiotic therapy with probiotic lactobacilli in south African women with bacterial vaginosis.

BACKGROUND: To reduce acquisition and relapse of bacterial vaginosis (BV), lactobacilli must be maintained in the vaginal microbiome. Probiotic lactobacilli may aid this purpose. We investigated whether vaginal probiotics (containing Lactobacillus rhamnosus DSM 14870 and Lactobacillus gasseri DSM 14869) would result in vaginal colonisation with lactobacilli in women with and without BV. METHODS: This prospective, partially randomised, exploratory pilot study was conducted in Soweto, South Africa. Thirty-nine sexually-active, HIV negative women were enrolled from October 2014 to May 2016 into

Human Milk Oligosaccharides Modulate Nitrogen Utilization in Lactobacillus crispatus in a Glucose-Dependent Manner.

The vaginal microbiome's transition to a dysbiotic state increases susceptibility to pathogens like group B Streptococcus. While human milk oligosaccharides are established prebiotics in the neonatal gut, their impact on the vaginal niche remains largely unexplored. This study investigated the effects of pooled human milk oligosaccharides on the growth and physiology of vaginal (Lactobacillus crispatus, Lactobacillus gasseri, Lactobacillus iners) and gut-derived (Lactobacillus reuteri, Lactobacillus rhamnosus) commensals. Growth analyses revealed that human milk oligosaccharides significantly

Using of the 16S rDNA sequencing for identification of Lactobacillus species.

INTRODUCTION: Lactobacilli play an important role in maintaining vaginal health and pro- tecting the genital tract from bacterial infections, so very often they are used as probiotics. Despite the scientific consensus on the significance of the genus Lactobacillus, its species identification still poses several difficulties. The aim of this study was to find out if the 16S rDNA sequencing method allows exact genotyping of Lactobacillus species. METHODS: 78 isolates from healthy pregnant women were tested: 57 from the vagina and 21 from the rectum. We also examined seven reference strains: L.

Ellagic acid mitigates rotavirus-induced intestinal injury via bidirectional "immune-microbiota" regulatory effect.

INTRODUCTION: Rotavirus (RV) is a major cause of childhood gastroenteritis, leading to intestinal damage, inflammation, and gut microbiota dysbiosis. This study investigated whether ellagic acid (EA), a natural polyphenol, can alleviate RV-induced intestinal injury by modulating both host immunity and the gut microbiota. METHODS: In this study, RV was used to infect BALB/c suckling mouse models to explore whether ellagic acid could alleviate intestinal damage following rotavirus infection through bidirectional regulation of "immunity and microbiota". The viral load of RV, the expression level

Lactobacillus isalae sp. nov., isolated from the female reproductive tract.

A novel strain of the genus Lactobacillus, named AMBV1719T, was isolated from the vagina of a healthy participant in our large-scale citizen science project on the female microbiome, named Isala. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the 16S rRNA gene of AMBV1719T is most similar to that of Lactobacillus taiwanensis with a sequence similarity of 99.873 %. However, a genome-wide comparison using average nucleotide identity (ANI) revealed that isolate AMBV1719T showed the highest ANI with Lactobacillus paragasseri JCM 5343T, with a value of only 88.17 %. This low ANI value with the most closely rela
