[Language disorders in children with morphologic abnormalities of the hippocampus].

PURPOSE: Morphologic abnormalities of the hippocampal formations (MAHF) are more frequently observed in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We wished to specify the types of disorders associated with these malformations based on a retrospective case series by studying the language of the children presenting these abnormalities. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From the data of all the MRIs taken in the neuroradiology ward of our center over 16 months in patients under 18 years of age, we retrospectively selected the children with an MAHF, isolated or associated with other malformations. The MAHFs were def

[Long-term prognosis for developmental language disorder].

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of neurologic and psychiatric comorbidity on the prognosis of developmental language disorder. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 470 pre-school children (4-7 years) with language learning impairment were investigated in the period 1969-1976 at the Institute for Language Impairment in Risskov (SIT) during a 3-6 week observation period. Deaf children were excluded. Questionnaires were sent to the 470 participants in 2006. They were then 36-45 years of age. RESULTS: A total of 200 responses were received. The answer group and the n

Is expressive language disorder an accurate diagnostic category?

PURPOSE: To propose that the diagnostic category of "expressive language disorder" as distinct from a disorder of both expressive and receptive language might not be accurate. METHOD: Evidence that casts doubt on a pure form of this disorder is reviewed from several sources, including the literature on genetic findings, theories of language impairments, and the outcomes of late talkers with expressive language delays. Areas of language that are problematic in production but not readily amenable to comprehension testing are also discussed. CONCLUSIONS: The notion of expressive language disord

[Language and neurodevelopmental disorders. A review of their clinical characteristics].

INTRODUCTION: Language is a keystone in the normal social and cognitive development of any group of children and early, fitting interventions can largely reduce the repercussions that the deficit has in this area. The article analyses the definition of language as 'the result of a complex nervous activity that allows individuals to communicate mental states by the production of multi-modal signs that symbolise these states in accordance with a linguistic community's own convention'. Other language-related terms are also dealt with. DEVELOPMENT: Different classifications of language disorders

Mothers' estimates of their children with disorders of language development.

The authors' objective in this article was to explore the accuracy of mothers' estimates concerning their children's developmental functioning, especially with respect to vocabulary and gross motor development, by comparing the results of diagnostic tests administered to both the children and their mothers. The authors studied 55 children with disorders of language development (LD) between the ages of 3 and 6 years using several diagnostic scales concerning child development. The authors assessed the mothers' estimates regarding vocabulary and gross motor development by the same scales as thos

Multimodal Language Processing in Children With Developmental Language Disorder: The Influence of Verbal and Visuospatial Memory.

PURPOSE: This study investigates how verbal and visuospatial memory capacities contribute to the processing and comprehension of pragmatic meanings that are expressed multimodally in children with and without developmental language disorder (DLD). METHOD: Seventy-seven children (33 with DLD, 44 typically developing [TD]), aged 5-10 years, completed standardized memory tasks and participated in a visual-world eye-tracking experiment assessing both online processing and offline comprehension of sentences with simple and complex pragmatic meanings (interrogativity and indirect requests, respecti

Children screening positive for language delay at 2.5 years: language disorder and developmental profiles.

PURPOSE: To characterize language disorder and developmental profiles in children who screened positive for language delay but negative for autism at 2.5 years of age. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The first 100 children who screened positive for language delay - but negative for autism - in 2016 were assessed in detail by speech language pathologists. Parents completed a newly developed questionnaire covering eight domains - Motor, Executive functions, Perception, Memory, Language, Learning, Social skills and Child's behaviour - with impairment scored for each domain. RESULTS: ICD-10 language disor

A First-Person Account of Developmental Language Disorder.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to share the lived experiences of an adult with developmental language disorder (DLD) and relate her experience to the evidence base and issues in clinical practice. METHOD: We co-wrote a first-person account grounded in the research literature. We organized the account into six main sections: (a) the early signs of DLD; (b) diagnosis; (c) treatment; (d) the impact of DLD on family relationships, social-emotional health, and academic performance; and (e) considerations for practicing speech-language pathologists. We close with (f) the first author's current p

Predicting Dyslexia in Children With Developmental Language Disorder.

Purpose In this study, we examine how well kindergarten letter identification and phonological awareness predict 2nd grade word reading and dyslexia in children with developmental language disorder (DLD) and their age- and grade-matched peers with typical language (TL). Method We employ (a) logistic regression to determine how letter identification and phonological awareness predict dyslexia, that is, dichotomous categorization of good or poor word reading, in children with DLD and TL and (b) quantile regression to determine how letter identification and phonological awareness are associated w

Gender differences in language are small but matter for disorders.

Gender differences in language can be signs of cognitive differences, but can also by themselves be the cause for such differences. Females have a slight linguistic advantage over males, but effect sizes are small, and gender explains very little of the variance seen in the normal population (1%-2%). However, males outnumber females in the lowest 10th percentile in language tests (2:1), causing males to more often be diagnosed with developmental disorders, which rely on tests of language development. Thus, gender differences in language are negligible, if you focus on the whole population, but

Mathematical Abilities in Children With Developmental Language Disorder.

Purpose This review article provides a scoping review of the literature on mathematical abilities in developmental language disorder (DLD). Children with DLD typically struggle with learning in school; however, the mechanism by which DLD impacts academic success is unclear. Mathematics involves demands in the multiple domains and therefore holds potential for examining the relationship between language and academic performance on tasks mediated by verbal and nonverbal demands. Method A scoping review was performed via computerized database searching to examine literature on mathematics and DLD

[Specific developmental disorder of speech and language in adulthood].

Specific developmental disorder of speech and language is part of a more general category of neurodevelopmental disorders, which is encountered in 7-10% of the childhood population. These children exhibit a significant impairment in speech and language development, which cannot be justified by hearing impairment, cognitive impairment, neuromuscular or orofacial disorders, as well as by emotional or environmental factors. Specific developmental disorders of speech and language are often comorbid with other neurodevelopmental disorders, such as motor coordination disorder and ADHD. These disorde

Progressive language disorder due to lobar atrophy.

Sixteen patients with progressive language disorder have been studied longitudinally. Anomia was a prominent presenting characteristic and mutism ultimately occurred. Patients, however, were clinically heterogeneous. Some exhibited nonfluent, agrammatic features, whereas others demonstrated a fluent aphasia, with profound loss of word meaning. Although language disorder remained the sole symptom in a minority of patients, in others an associative agnosia or personality and behavioral changes, or both, emerged. Findings on computed tomography and single photon emission tomography mirrored the a

Behavioral correlates of developmental expressive language disorder.

The association of behavior problems with preschool language disorders has been documented extensively. However, researchers have typically failed to differentiate subgroups of language-impaired children, to use observational data in documenting the behavior disorders, or to study children at the youngest ages. Using a multimodal assessment, this study examined parent-child interaction and behavior problems in a clearly defined subgroup of language-impaired children, those with developmental expressive language disorder (ELD). These children exhibit a delay in expressive language compared with

Speech and language pathologists' diagnostic approaches to developmental language disorders in German-speaking children with intellectual disability.

INTRODUCTION: Children with an intellectual disability (ID) often manifest a developmental language disorder (DLD). However, conventional standardized DLD diagnostic tools often prove unsuitable for this population. Furthermore, no guidelines are provided on how speech and language pathologists (SLPs) should conduct the assessment. This study investigated how practitioners in German-speaking countries assess DLD in children with ID, including the role of multilingualism and practitioners' self-perceived competence. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted with 102 practitioners

Language considerations for children of parents with substance use disorders.

Parents with substance use disorders are highly stigmatized by multiple systems (e.g., healthcare, education, legal, social). As a result, they are more likely to experience discrimination and health inequities [1, 2]. Children of parents with substance use disorders often do not fare any better, as they frequently experience stigma and poorer outcomes by association [3, 4]. Calls to action for person-centered language for alcohol and other drug problems have led to improved terminology [5-8]. Despite a long history of stigmatizing, offensive labels such as "children of alcoholics" and "crack

New genes for focal epilepsies with speech and language disorders.

The last 2 years have seen exciting advances in the genetics of Landau-Kleffner syndrome and related disorders, encompassed within the epilepsy-aphasia spectrum (EAS). The striking finding of mutations in the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor subunit gene GRIN2A as the first monogenic cause in up to 20% of patients with EAS suggests that excitatory glutamate receptors play a key role in these disorders. Patients with GRIN2A mutations have a recognizable speech and language phenotype that may assist with diagnosis. Other molecules involved in RNA binding and cell adhesion have been implicate

[Cerebellum and language: speech therapy intervention to treat their disorders].

INTRODUCTION: Advances in neuroimaging techniques have sparked a growing interest in the study of the cerebellum and its role in the cognitive processes. It is becoming increasingly clear that there is a relationship between this organ and linguistic production, and between pathologies of the cerebellum and some language disorders, such as cerebellar dysarthria. AIMS: To review the contribution made by the cerebellum to the linguistic functions, to analyse the language disorders that derive from cerebellar diseases and to propose the use of speech therapy intervention in conditions of this ki
