Learning disabilities: Developmental dyscalculia.

Developmental dyscalculia (DD) is a developmental learning disability that manifests as a persistent difficulty in comprehending even the most basic numeric and arithmetic concepts, despite normal intelligence and schooling opportunities. Given the predominant use of numbers in modern society, this condition can pose major challenges in the sufferer's everyday life, both in personal and professional development. Since, to date, we still lack a universally recognized and psychometrically driven definition of DD, its diagnosis has been applied to a wide variety of cognitive profiles. In this cha

Statistical Learning and Spelling.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this article is to provide a tutorial on statistical learning and its role in learning to spell and to discuss the implications of the research for educators. METHOD: The tutorial begins with a discussion of statistical learning and its characteristics. It then discusses research on how statistical learning plays out in learning to spell, how spelling should be taught, and similarities and differences among learners. The focus is on the learning of English, although studies of other alphabetic writing systems are also considered. Research shows that, from an early age,

Statistical Learning and Bilingualism.

PURPOSE: Over the last 2 decades, research on statistical learning has demonstrated its importance in supporting language development. Notably, most of the research to date has focused on monolingual populations (or has not reported the language background of participants). Several recent studies, however, have begun to focus on the impact of bilingualism on statistical learning. To date, the results have been quite mixed, with a handful of studies finding differences between monolinguals and bilinguals and several other studies reporting no differences. Thus, the purpose of this manuscript is

Procedural learning and dyslexia.

Three major 'neural systems', specialized for different types of information processing, are the sensory, declarative, and procedural systems. It has been proposed (Trends Neurosci., 30(4), 135-141) that dyslexia may be attributable to impaired function in the procedural system together with intact declarative function. We provide a brief overview of the increasing evidence relating to the hypothesis, noting that the framework involves two main claims: first that 'neural systems' provides a productive level of description avoiding the underspecificity of cognitive descriptions and the overspec

Implicit learning and dyslexia.

Several studies have reported an association between dyslexia and implicit learning deficits. It has been suggested that the weakness in implicit learning observed in dyslexic individuals may be related to sequential processing and implicit sequence learning. In the present article, we review the current literature on implicit learning and dyslexia. We describe a novel, forced-choice structural "mere exposure" artificial grammar learning paradigm and characterize this paradigm in normal readers in relation to the standard grammaticality classification paradigm. We argue that preference classif

[Non-verbal learning disabilities].

In 1975, Myklebust proposed a special form of learning disabilities characterizes by impairment of spatial cognition, social interaction and conceptualization, and named it as non-verbal learning disabilities (NLD). Since the brain locus for spatial cognition was thought to be localized in the right hemisphere, NLD was regarded as a disorder of the right hemispheric function. The clinical characteristics of NLD are almost identical to those of Asperger syndrome (AS), which was introduced in English literature in 1981. Since Asperger syndrome is regarded as one of the autistic spectrum disorder

The sales learning curve.

When a company launches a new product into a new market, the temptation is to immediately ramp up sales force capacity to gain customers as quickly as possible. But hiring a full sales force too early just causes the firm to burn through cash and fail to meet revenue expectations. Before it can sell an innovative product efficiently, the entire organization needs to learn how customers will acquire and use it, a process the authors call the sales learning curve. The concept of a learning curve is well understood in manufacturing. Employees transfer knowledge and experience back and forth betwe

Autism and learning disability.

In this article a short overview is given of the relationship between autism and learning disability. Autism exists with any level of intelligence, but many individuals with autism suffer also from learning disability. Although both disorders show overlap in some behaviours they are different in many aspects. Are they distinct syndromes which influence each other, or do they belong to a broad spectrum of a condition?

Isotropic sequence order learning.

In this article, we present an isotropic unsupervised algorithm for temporal sequence learning. No special reward signal is used such that all inputs are completely isotropic. All input signals are bandpass filtered before converging onto a linear output neuron. All synaptic weights change according to the correlation of bandpass-filtered inputs with the derivative of the output. We investigate the algorithm in an open- and a closed-loop condition, the latter being defined by embedding the learning system into a behavioral feedback loop. In the open-loop condition, we find that the linear stru

Developmental language learning impairments.

Developmental language learning impairments (LLI) are one of the most prevalent of all developmental disabilities, can occur in children for a wide variety of reasons, and have been shown to co-occur frequently with other developmental social, emotional and behavioral disorders, as well as with academic achievement problems. Research pertaining to developmental LLI of unknown origin, with an emphasis on the continuum between oral and written language impairment, is the focus of this review. Given the complexity of language learning, research has focused on multiple levels of analysis, includin

Metacognition in motor learning.

Research on judgments of verbal learning has demonstrated that participants' judgments are unreliable and often overconfident. The authors studied judgments of perceptual-motor learning. Participants learned 3 keystroke patterns on the number pad of a computer, each requiring that a different sequence of keys be struck in a different total movement time. Practice trials on each pattern were either blocked or randomly interleaved with trials on the other patterns, and each participant was asked, periodically, to predict his or her performance on a 24-hr test. Consistent with earlier findings, b

Learning in respiratory control.

In this article, it is argued that learning participates to fulfill the metabolic requirements by adapting respiratory control to changing internal and external states. Recent classical-conditioning experiments in newborn mice or adult rats show the close link between conditioned respiratory and arousal responses. The conditioned fear model may be a suitable and largely unexplored model of emotionally induced hyperventilation. The parabrachial nucleus and periacqueducal grey may play a pivotal role in the ventilatory component of conditioned fear. The sensitivity of breathing to conditioning i

Ageing and learning disability.

BACKGROUND: Ageing is a continuation of the developmental process and is influenced by genetic and other biological factors as well as personal and social circumstances. AIMS: To identify some key biological, psychological and social issues relevant to how ageing might particularly effect people with learning disabilities. METHOD: This selected review considers the extent to which there are similarities and differences relative to people without learning disabilities. RESULTS: There is a convergence, in later life, between people with a learning disability and those without, owing to the re

[Epilepsy and learning disorders].

INTRODUCTION: Children with epilepsy have more behavioral and cognitive problem than children with other chronic illness and children in the general population. Risk factors are multiple probably involving a combination of seizure, family and child variable, behavioral problems (depression, occur frequently but may be unrecognized). Anxiety disorders and psychoses are less common. DEVELOPMENT: The learning and behavioral found in epileptic children is multifactorial, first the effects of the conditions causing the epilepsy, in addition the epilepsy itself may cause, change in the nervous syst

Triggering learning in midwifery.

The delivery of the head with or without forceps may have been quite easy, but more commonly there has been a little difficulty in completing the extension of the head. The hairy scalp slides with reluctance. When the forehead has appeared it is necessary to press back the perineum to deliver the face. Fat cheeks eventually emerge. A double chin has hooked over the posterior commissure, to which it remains tightly opposed. Restitution seldom occurs spontaneously for the head seems incapable of movement as a result of friction with the girdle of contact at the vulva... time passes. The child's
