Neuropsychological assessment of learning disabilities: a discriminant analysis.

The neuropsychological test scores of 23 learning disabled children were compared with those of a matched population of normal children in the 9-1 to 13-1 age range. All children were administered the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R), a dichotic listening task involving both free and directed recall conditions, a handedness inventory, the Tactile Performance Test and the Category Test from the Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Test Battery. A multivariate analysis of variance resulted in a significant separation between groups (p less than .001) using these procedures

Learning disabilities in children with sex chromosome anomalies.

Studies of clinical populations have suggested that genetic factors may be involved in the etiology of learning disabilities. The present study included 44 children (ages 7-16) with sex chromosome anomalies (SCA) who were identified in a 10-year sex chromosome screening of all newborns in 2 large hospitals and thus represents an unbiased sample of children with a genetic etiology. 17 chromosomally normal siblings are included as controls. All subjects were given IQ and achievement tests, and extensive, repeated school histories were taken from parents and school personnel. Results demonstrate

Toward operationalizing a psychoeducational definition of learning disabilities.

An operational definition of "learning disabilities" is presented from the standpoint that classificatory psychoeducational definitions must ultimately relate to educational processes. Thus the condition should be described in terms of abilities crucial to educational achievement, and noneducational criteria should not be employed. It is pointed out that the most generally accepted current definition--which identifies children as "learning-disabled" on the basis of behavioral criteria, while excluding others because of etiological and other nonbehavioral factors--overlooks functional similarit

Learning on the Job for People with Disabilities.

Possessing the skills needed to successfully perform higher-paying jobs in the 21st century remains a significant barrier to employment for people with disabilities. (1) The labor participation rate for people with disabilities is 20 percent, compared to 68 percent for those without a disability. (2) The U.S. Army offers a summer apprenticeship program for high school students from groups historically under-represented in science, technology, engineering and math subjects, including students with disabilities.

Emotional false memories in children with learning disabilities.

Research has shown that children with learning disabilities (LD) are less prone to evince associative illusions of memory as a result of impairments in their ability to engage in semantic processing. However, it is unclear whether this observation is true for scripted life events, especially if they include emotional content, or across a broad spectrum of learning disabilities. The present study addressed these issues by assessing recognition memory for script-like information in children with nonverbal learning disability (NLD), children with dyslexia, and typically developing children (N=51)

Contribution of tobacco smoke exposure to learning disabilities.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the contribution of exposure to prenatal tobacco smoke (PTS) and environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) to parent-reported learning disabilities. DESIGN: A nationally representative, cross-sectional survey conducted in the United States, the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999 to 2002, was used to explore the association between reported learning disability and exposure to PTS and ETS. PARTICIPANTS: Data were analyzed from 5,420 children ages 4 to 15 years old. METHODS: Secondary data analysis was conducted using logistic regression controllin

Learning Abilities and Disabilities: Generalist Genes, Specialist Environments.

Twin studies comparing identical and fraternal twins consistently show substantial genetic influence on individual differences in learning abilities such as reading and mathematics, as well as in other cognitive abilities such as spatial ability and memory. Multivariate genetic research has shown that the same set of genes is largely responsible for genetic influence on these diverse cognitive areas. We call these "generalist genes." What differentiates these abilities is largely the environment, especially nonshared environments that make children growing up in the same family different from

Learning disabilities and mental ill health: care plans.

Comprehensive multidisciplinary assessment and treatment are particularly important for clients who present with learning disabilities and mental health problems (O'Hara and Sperlinger, 1997). This should not be restricted to professionals who work in services for people with learning disabilities and should include a wider network of professionals from statutory services and the independent sector. This arrangement can be complex as different agencies and even different departments of the same agency may differ fundamentally in their philosophy, vision and understanding of their own and other

Screening for learning disabilities with teacher rating scales.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the use of teacher assessments in screening for learning disabilities. In a longitudinal study, 603 children were rated by their teachers in the second grade (age 8 to 9 years), and the ratings were correlated with examinations of reading, spelling, and intelligence in the third grade. The third-grade tests for reading, spelling, and intelligence classified children into groups with low achievement and dyslexia, and these two groups were compared with normally achieving children. The accuracy of teacher assessments, measured with correlation analysis

Concerns of families of children with learning disabilities.

The purpose of this report is to share the experiences and concerns of a group of parents of children with learning disabilities. Parents of eight different families were interviewed in depth, and seven themes emerged from the interviews. Parents discussed their involvement in their child's education, and their positive and negative experiences with school personnel as well as with seeking other sources of support. They expressed concerns about the social isolation and future well-being of their children with learning disabilities. They indicated many emotional strains from parenting children

Practical management of children with apparent learning disabilities.

There should be a collaborative evaluation of a child with apparent learning disabilities. This article describes what the neurologist can expect from the other disciplines and how the services can be coordinated, using either the multidisciplinary services of a clinic or comprehensive assessment by a private practitioner.

A developmental study of learning disabilities and memory.

Seven-, ten-, and thirteen-year-old learning-disabled (LD) and non-learning-disabled (NORM) children were presented specially structured lists of 38 words each and tested for free recall. Each list contained only four semantically related words. Two of the four related words were presented contiguously (serial positions 9 and 10) and the other two words were spaced (serial positions 20 and 30). All children recalled disproportionately more adjacent words (item 9 or 10) than any other words. Spaced words (items 20 and 30) were less likely to be recalled by the younger children than by the older

Increased morphological variants in children with learning disabilities.

Previous studies have shown that children with learning disabilities have more morphological variants or anomalies than normal children, suggesting that the morphological and central nervous system effects may be the result of the same prenatal factors. The morphological variants were assumed to have arisen in the first 3 months of prenatal development, which may not be so. We have partitioned variants into those that probably arise early in fetal development ("early" variants) and those that could arise later and could be due to altered growth ("late" variants). There was an increase in both

Are we exacerbating students' learning disabilities? an investigation of preservice teachers' attributions of the educational outcomes of students with learning disabilities.

While claims of the importance of attribution theory and teachers' expectations of students for student performance are repeatedly made, there is little comprehensive research identifying the perceptions preservice teachers have of students with learning disabilities (LD). Accordingly, 444 Australian preservice primary school teachers were surveyed using vignettes and Likert-scale questions, to ascertain their responses to students with and without LD. It was found that preservice primary school general education teachers held a negative attribution style towards students with LD. Preservice p

Physical activity and learning disability.

The inclusion of people with learning disabilities in sporting activities promotes a number of positive outcomes. These may include opportunities for social inclusion, the creation of positive role models for other people with learning disabilities, the opportunity to present people with learning disabilities in valued social roles to a global community, sharing of common interests and experiences, and social and competitive rewards. There is also the potential for positive physical and mental health outcomes. Current data suggests that people with learning disabilities are physically less act
