The use of medical leeches for venous congestion. A review and case report.

The medicinal leech, Hirudo medicinalis, has been used for hundreds of years in human medicine for a variety of diseases, most recently including venous congestion following reconstructive surgeries (skin flaps and reimplantations), excessive lingual and periorbital swelling, and non-traditional treatments for osteoarthritis, compartment syndrome and sialoadenitis. The treatment of venous congestion in animals using leeches has been mentioned anecdotally, but the only published report pertains to the use of leeches in a cat suffering from polycythemia vera. We report the use of medical grade l

Bugs as drugs, part two: worms, leeches, scorpions, snails, ticks, centipedes, and spiders.

In this second of a two-part series analyzing the evidence for the use of organisms as medicine, the use of a number of different "bugs" (worms, leeches, snails, ticks, centipedes, and spiders) is detailed. Several live organisms are used as treatments: leeches for plastic surgery and osteoarthritis and the helminths Trichuris suis and Necator americanus for inflammatory bowel disease. Leech saliva is the source of a number of anticoagulants, including the antithrombin agent hirudin and its synthetic analogues, which have been approved for human use. Predatory arthropods, such as certain speci

Comparative genomics of three non-hematophagous leeches (Whitmania spp.) with emphasis on antithrombotic biomolecules.

Leeches are well known for blood-feeding habits and are widely used for medicinal purposes as they secrete various antithrombotic substances. However, some leeches exhibit non-hematophagous habits and their significance for medicinal use is controversial. Here we provide the chromosome-level genomes of two non-hematophagous leeches, Whitmania acranulata and Whitmania laevis, and, in combination with previous results from Whitmania pigra, we compared these genomes with an emphasis on antithrombotic biomolecules. All three species had the same chromosome number of 11. The genome size, repeat sit

Management of herpes zoster in Ayurveda through medicinal leeches and other composite Ayurveda Treatment.

Herpes zoster commonly known as shingle's caused by varicella zoster virus (VZV). Recent studies have shown that exosomes play important role in pathogenesis as well as spread of herpes. Leeches when applied over affected part of herpes sucks the blood and there by interferes with extracellular communication through these exosomes and their by showing pain reduction, reduction in burning and arrest progression of disease. This technique is cost effective and easy to apply. In Ayurveda herpes can be correlated with Pittaj visarpa. Principle of treatment is Raktmokshan (~Bloodletting) and Pradeh

Mechanisms and Research Progress of Leech in Diabetic Ulcer Fibrosis.

Delayed wound healing is a major complication of diabetes, with its core pathological process being pathological fibrosis driven by persistent inflammation, metabolic disorders and vascular dysfunction under hyperglycemia. This process involves pathological retention of inflammatory cells, abnormal expression of pro-fibrotic factors, and excessive deposition of extracellular matrix. As a traditional Chinese medicine, leech possesses multiple pharmacological effects including anticoagulation, anti-inflammation and improvement of microcirculation, exerting its therapeutic roles through regulatin

Hirudins and fenestrins of the African medicinal leech Asiaticobdella fenestrata.

African hematophagous leeches are largely underinvestigated both in terms of their biodiversity and the characterization of the repertoire of bioactive components of their salivary gland secretions. Asiaticobdella (formerly Aliolimnatis) fenestrata Moore, 1939, also referred to as the African medicinal leech, is hence a promising candidate for the identification and functional characterization of putative anticoagulants that may serve as inspirations for the development of new or the enhancement of existing drugs for medical purposes. A. fenestrata inhabits flooded plains of southern African r

Ocular infestation by a juvenile leech, Myxobdella sinanensis in Japan.

PURPOSE: The case of ocular infestation by a leech is rare. We reported that Myxobdella sinanensis infests conjunctiva. OBSERVATIONS: A 5-year-old girl presented with blood clots in the inner corner of the left eye, and a history bloody eye discharge and bloody tears for 5 days. She was prescribed 0.5% levofloxacin ophthalmic drops for conjunctival damage. However, her parent watched a worm moving in her conjunctiva while taking a bath. She presented again the same day, and a worm was found in the left eye of the lower conjunctival fornix and was adsorbed to the inner corner. We removed a wor

An Unusual Cause of Recurrent Epistaxis: Nasal Leech Infestation.

Though a common symptom, epistaxis should never be overlooked as the implications may be consequential. Nasal leech infestation represents an unusual etiology of recurrent epistaxis. The leeches release enzymes to anaesthetize the attachment site to facilitate the feeding process. Given the inconspicuous area of infestation and the absence of pain, there is often a delayed treatment. A detailed history taking and physical examination remain paramount in the assessment of recurrent epistaxis.

Characterization of a monoacylglycerol lipase in the medicinal leech, Hirudo verbana.

Endocannabinoids are a class of lipid neuromodulators found throughout the animal kingdom. Among the endocannabinoids, 2-arachydonoyl glycerol (2-AG) is the most prevalent endocannabinoid and monoacylglycerol lipase (MAGL) is a serine hydrolase primarily responsible for metabolizing 2-AG in mammals. In the medicinal leech, Hirudo verbana, 2-AG has been found to be an important and multi-functional modulator of synaptic transmission and behavior. However, very little is known about the molecular components of its synthesis and degradation. In this study we have identified cDNA in Hirudo that en

An Unusual Cause of Bleeding on the Floor of Mouth: Leech Infestation.

Leech infestation is a very rare phenomenon in humans. It mostly occurs in humans when rural untreated water is drunk or while swimming in streams or lakes. When leeches adhere to the mucous membrane, they ingest blood. Thus, they can sometimes cause severe anemia that may require blood transfusion. We report a case that was referred to emergency service with bleeding in the floor of the mouth. A 10-year-old child was referred to the emergency service of a city hospital with a complaint of swelling in the floor of the mouth and spitting of blood. The patient was promptly taken to the operating

An unusual cause of dysphonia with hemoptysis: a laryngeal live leech.

INTRODUCTION: Foreign bodies in the upper airway are one of the most challenging otolaryngology emergencies and have various presentations depending on their physical properties and location. Leeches are blood-sucking hermaphroditic worms that vary in color, length, and shape. They usually reside in fresh-water streams and lakes. When rural untreated water is drunk, leeches may localize in the nose, pharynx, and esophagus, or rarely in the larynx. CASE REPORT: This case is a man who was referred to our otolaryngology clinic with a complaint of hemoptysis and mild respiratory distress. The pat

Rectal bleeding due to leech bite: a case report.

We present herein a case with a four-day history of fresh rectal bleeding due to leech bite. The cause was found to be a leech in the rectum by anoscope. This pathological condition is extremely rare in urban areas. Leech endoparasitism, although rare, may cause serious, even lethal, complications. Suspicion of leech infestation should be kept in mind when faced with intermittent or severe rectal bleeding in humans, and should be investigated surgically as with all other foreign bodies. In the current study, we present a patient who admitted with rectal bleeding due to leech bite. The leech wa

Aquatic leech as a rare cause of respiratory distress and hemoptysis.

This paper presents a 73 years old male with three weeks history of intermittent hemoptysis, dysphagia, dyspnea, stridor, and suffocations sensation. By means of fibrotic bronchoscopic examination, the cause was found to be a leech in the glottis. It was removed by injection of 4 ml lidocaine 2%. Infestation into the respiratory tract by a leech may become lethal because of hypoxia and death secondary to airway obstruction. A high index of suspicion of leech infestation sould be considered in patients presenting with hemoptysis, hoarseness and respiratory distress and a history of recent conta

Unusual cause of unilateral epistaxis: nasal leech infestation.

Common causes for unilateral nasal bleeding in adults are benign or malignant tumors and deviated nasal septum. Here we present two cases of recurrent unilateral nasal bleeding due to leech infestation. Though it is not a common cause for nasal bleeding, a clinician should suspect leech infestation for a recurrent nasal bleeding specially in tropical countries like Nepal.

Voltage-dependent Ca2+ influx into identified leech neurones.

We determined the relationships between the intracellular free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) and the membrane potential (Em) of six different neurones in the leech central nervous system: Retzius, 50 (Leydig), AP, AE, P, and N neurones. The [Ca2+]i was monitored by using iontophoretically injected fura-2. The membrane depolarization evoked by raising the extracellular K+ concentration ([K+]o) up to 89 mM caused a persistent increase in [Ca2+]i, which was abolished in Ca(2+)-free solution indicating that it was due to Ca2+ influx. The threshold membrane potential that must be reached in the diff

Expression of surface glycoproteins early in leech neural development.

Cell migration and axon growth during neural development rely upon cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions mediated by surface glycoproteins. The surface glycoprotein recognized on leech neurons by monoclonal antibody Lan3-2 has previously been implicated in the process of axon fasciculation during regeneration in adults. In adult leeches, Lan3-2 binds to a carbohydrate epitope of a 130 kD protein. The present study demonstrates that in embryos the antibody binds to the same carbohydrate epitope of glycoproteins with molecular weights of 130 kD and higher. As a first step in evaluating a possib
