The Association Between the Single Leg Hop Test and Lower-Extremity Injuries in Female Athletes: A Critically Appraised Topic.

Clinical Scenario: Female college student-athletes (SA) often experience time loss from musculoskeletal injuries to the lower extremities. This can lead to lengthy rehabilitation, expensive medical bills, and declines in health-related quality of life. Identifying at-risk athletes prior to the start of an athletic season may allow coaches or athletic trainers to prescribe an injury prevention program. Clinical Question: In female college SA, are preseason single leg hop (SLH) scores associated with identifying those at risk for lower-extremity musculoskeletal injuries? Summary of Key Findings:

Leg Dominance as a Risk Factor for Lower-Limb Injuries in Downhill Skiers-A Pilot Study into Possible Mechanisms.

Leg dominance has been reported as one potential risk factor for lower-limb injuries in recreational downhill skiers. The current study proposed and tested two possible mechanisms for a leg dominance effect on skiing injuries-imbalance of the knee muscle strength and bilateral asymmetry in sensorimotor control. We hypothesized that the knee muscle strength (Hypothesis 1; H1) or postural control (Hypothesis 2; H2) would be affected by leg dominance. Fifteen well-experienced recreational downhill skiers (aged 24.3 ± 3.2 years) participated in this study. Isometric knee flexor/extensor muscle str

Continuous Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Demonstrates Limitations in Monitoring the Development of Acute Compartment Syndrome in Patients with Leg Injuries.

BACKGROUND: We recorded measurements of muscle perfusion using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and intramuscular pressure (IMP) in a study designed to develop a decision rule for predicting acute compartment syndrome (ACS). The purpose of this study was to report our experience measuring NIRS data in the context of this broader investigation and to explore factors related to variations in data capture. METHODS: One hundred and eighty-five patients with lower-leg injuries had data consisting of continuous NIRS measurement of the O2 saturation in the anterior compartment of the injured limb a

Decomposition of leg movements during overground walking in individuals with traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: Walking requires precise coordination of bilateral lower extremity motions at all joints. This ability can be affected by traumatic brain injury (TBI). The study investigated inter-joint coordination of lower extremities during overground walking after TBI. METHODS: Ten individuals with post-injury ataxia, postural stability and gait abnormalities, as well as 10 sex- and age-matched control subjects were involved in the study. Participants walked at self-selected speed in three experimental conditions: normal walking without any additional task; walking with a narrow base of suppor

Survival Model for Foot and Leg High Rate Axial Impact Injury Data.

OBJECTIVES: Understanding how lower extremity injuries from automotive intrusion and underbody blast (UBB) differ is of key importance when determining whether automotive injury criteria can be applied to blast rate scenarios. This article provides a review of existing injury risk analyses and outlines an approach to improve injury prediction for an expanded range of loading rates. This analysis will address issues with existing injury risk functions including inaccuracies due to inertial and potential viscous resistance at higher loading rates. METHODS: This survival analysis attempts to min

Hip proprioceptors preferentially modulate reflexes of the leg in human spinal cord injury.

Stretch-sensitive afferent feedback from hip muscles has been shown to trigger long-lasting, multijoint reflex responses in people with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI). These reflexes could have important implications for control of leg movements during functional activities, such as walking. Because the control of leg movement relies on reflex regulation at all joints of the limb, we sought to determine whether stretch of hip muscles modulates reflex activity at the knee and ankle and, conversely, whether knee and ankle stretch afferents affect hip-triggered reflexes. A custom-built servomot

Effect of progesterone on recovery from nerve injury during leg lengthening in rats.

We investigated the effect of progesterone on the nerve during lengthening of the limb in rats. The sciatic nerves of rats were elongated by leg lengthening for ten days at 3 mm per day. On alternate days between the day after the operation and nerve dissection, the progesterone-treated group received subcutaneous injections of 1 mg progesterone in sesame oil and the control group received oil only. On the fifth, tenth and 17th day, the sciatic nerves were excised at the midpoint of the femur and the mRNA expression level of myelin protein P0 was analysed by quantitative real time polymerase c

[Therapeutic concepts in neurologic damage following severe soft tissue and bone injuries of the distal lower leg and foot].

In less than 1% of the cases nervous lesions after severe lower leg lesions demand surgical treatment: Neurosurgical Clinic: 28 reconstructive interventions on the lower leg, however, 362 on the forearm in 15 years; Clinic of Accident Surgery: 264 severest lower leg- and foot-injuries, among them only two nervous lesions. The n. peronaeus is more frequently affected than the n. tibialis. Even if continuity of the nerve is maintained, endoneural bleeding and internal ruptures can lead to extensive axonal lesions. The kind of nervous lesion (neurapraxia, axonotmesia, neurotmesia) should be clari

Evaluation of Leg Joint Injury Risk Following Aerial Basketball Catching Movements.

The primary objective of the study was to evaluate the risk of lower-extremity injury during landing, after catching a basketball in the air for a rebound or a steal. A total of 32 (15 females and 17 males) recreational basketball players were asked to perform 4 different arm-reaching movements during the flight phase: no reaching, left (LAR), right (RAR), and bilateral (BAR) arm reaching. Knee and hip flexion and abduction angles at initial ground contact, peak ground reaction force within 100 milliseconds after contact, and peak moments for the hip and knee joints were analyzed. LAR, RAR, an

An unusual patterned injury from homicidal craniocerebral impalement with a metal chair leg.

A 26-year-old young man died shortly after he had suffered craniocerebral impalement from a metal chair leg during an affray at an airport bar. At autopsy a 25 mm diameter circular wound was present in the left parietal region with protruding brain tissue. Death was due to craniocerebral trauma from a penetrating injury to the head. Examination of the chair used in the assault showed a metal chair with smeared blood on the front right leg that matched the blood group of the decedent. The fatal wound had been inflicted by the assailant with the victim leaning forward while kneeling on the floor
