Organ transplantation has become a valuable and accepted treatment for many patients with organ failure. A major limitation to transplantation is the shortage of organ donors. Due to lack of willingness by medical examiners to release child abuse cases for organ donation, child abuse victims are a greatly underutilized pool of potential donors. This study examined the effect of the co-occurrence of multiple categories of maltreatment on adolescent alcohol use. Data were from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health which used a nationally representative sample of adolescents (n = 14,078). In-depth unstructured interviews are conducted with previously abused divorced mothers about their experience with law guardians of their children. Interviews are transcribed and their content analyzed using ATLAS.ti software. Nine themes clustered in the following three groups emerge: perceived performance of law guardians; perceived shortcomings of the system, which provides a context for interaction with law guardians; and emotional effects on women. These themes are discussed and illustrated, and implications for practice are suggested.
