Cutaneous and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis resembling borderline-tuberculoid leprosy: a new clinical presentation?

Both cutaneous and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis are endemic in Northern Ethiopia. The different clinical presentations depend on the responsible organism and the host's immune response. Localized cutaneous leishmaniasis is the type most frequently seen. Diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis is relatively rare and usually associated with mucous membrane involvement. Diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis presents with multiple lesions, can be difficult to diagnose and responds less favourably to treatment. We report here 2 patients with unusual presentations of diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis presenting with

Leishmania mexicana mexicana: genetic heterogeneity of mexican isolates revealed by restriction length polymorphism analysis of kinetoplast DNA.

Leishmania mexicana mexicana isolates from 23 patients with localized, diffuse, and an atypical "pseudodiffuse" form of cutaneous leishmaniasis were obtained in various endemic regions of Mexico. Restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of kinetoplast DNA was done with nine different endonucleases in addition to an in vitro growth pattern analysis. We found that the 23 L. mexicana mexicana isolates could be consistently classified into six groups, according to the endonuclease digestion patterns obtained with HaeIII, HpaII, and MseI. Whereas localized cutaneous leishmaniasis isolates

[Cutaneous leishmaniasis].

Leishmaniasis is a group of parasitic conditions due to a flagella protozoan of the Leishmania genus and transmitted to man by phlebotomine sandflies. Cutaneous leishmaniasis exists all over the world. Those of the Old World are, in the vast majority of cases, purely cutaneous and spontaneously regress in several weeks to several months. In general, local treatment is sufficient. Those of the New World, due to multiple leishmaniasis complexes, involve a major risk of developing into a secondary mucosal form when rapid means of identifying the genus are not available. First-line treatment consi

SOD1 plasma level as a biomarker for therapeutic failure in cutaneous leishmaniasis.

We show that increased plasma superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) levels are statistically significant predictors of the failure of pentavalent antimony treatment for cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania braziliensis. In Leishmania amazonensis-infected patients, host SOD1 levels can be used to discriminate between localized and drug-resistant diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis. Using in situ transcriptomics (nCounter), we demonstrate a significant positive correlation between host SOD1 and interferon α/β messenger RNA (mRNA) levels, as well as interkingdom correlation between host SOD1 and para

[Miltefosine for disseminated cutaneous leishmaniasis].

Disseminated cutaneous leishmaniasis is a rare presentation characterized by hematogenous dissemination of the parasite that causes the appearance of multiple nodules and plaques in the skin of the whole body and even including the nasal mucous membrane. It differs from diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis because the alteration in cellular immunity is lower and the lesions may have epidermal desquamation. On the other hand, diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis presents nodular lesions and a specific anergy in the immune response directed against the parasite. This article describes the case of a Colomb

Differential Susceptibility to Antimony in Strains and Clinical Isolates of Leishmania amazonensis from Brazil: In Vitro and In Vivo Studies and Implications for Drug Response and Treatment Failure.

In Brazil, cutaneous leishmaniasis is endemic and may be caused by Leishmania amazonensis. This species is the second most prevalent species in that country, and it is responsible for localized cutaneous and diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis. Pentavalent antimony is still the first-line drug for cutaneous leishmaniasis treatment in Brazil. In this study, we investigated the in vitro susceptibility to antimony of a panel of L. amazonensis strains and clinical isolates responsible for cutaneous and diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis. There was a significant variation in susceptibility to antimony not

Clinical pattern and treatment outcome of cutaneous leishmaniasis patients in Somali region, eastern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Neglected tropical diseases, affecting over a billion people, include leishmaniasis, a protozoan parasite found in over 20 species. It is classified into three types: visceral, cutaneous, and muco-cutaneous leishmaniasis, with cutaneous leishmaniasis being the most common. Dogs and rodents are the primary reservoirs of leishmaniasis, which is transmitted by infected female sandflies. Cutaneous leishmaniasis, found on exposed parts such as the arms, face and legs, presents with diverse clinical manifestations, including erythematous lesions, large, painless nodules, ulceration and a

Leishmaniasis.

Leishmaniasis is a protozoan disease whose diverse clinical manifestations are dependent both on the infecting species of Leishmania and on the immune response of the host. Transmission of the disease occurs through the bite of a sand fly infected with Leishmania parasites. Infection may be restricted to the skin in cutaneous leishmaniasis, limited to the mucous membranes in mucosal leishmaniasis, or spread throughout the reticuloendothelial system in visceral leishmaniasis or kala azar. Three rare clinical variants of cutaneous leishmaniasis include diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis, leishmania

[Case report: disseminated cutaneous leishmaniasis (LCD)].

The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified leishmaniasis as an uncontrolled and emerging disease. In Ecuador, the only anecdotal cases of diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis were recorded in 1994 and have not been formally published. This form can be differentiated from classical localized cutaneous leishmaniasis by the number of injuries, the clinical type of the main elementary lesions (papular and acneform), and a weak response to standard treatments. The case we report is a 34-year-old woman who presented with disseminated nodular lesions and ulcers of various sizes with erythematous e

Disseminated cutaneous leishmaniasis due to Leishmania guyanensis: case of a patient with 425 lesions.

Disseminated cutaneous leishmaniasis is characterized by the presence of a large (> or =10) number of lesions at several anatomic sites (head, limbs, and trunk). Most of the lesions are small, papular, and appear simultaneously with or secondarily to one or several ulcerated lesions of localized cutaneous leishmaniasis. We report the first case of disseminated cutaneous leishmaniasis in French Guiana. It concerns a 24-year-old woman who tested negative for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The disease began with three lesions that became ulcerated. One week later, multiple papulo-nodular les

Mucocutaneous Leishmaniasis/HIV Coinfection Presented as a Diffuse Desquamative Rash.

Leishmaniasis is an infectious disease that is endemic in tropical areas and in the Mediterranean. This condition spreads to 98 countries in four continents, surpassing 12 million infected individuals, with 350 million people at risk of infection. This disease is characterized by a wide spectrum of clinical syndromes, caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania, with various animal reservoirs, such as rodents, dogs, wolves, foxes, and even humans. Transmission occurs through a vector, a sandfly of the genus Lutzomyia. There are three main clinical forms of leishmaniasis: visceral leishmaniasis,

Histocompatibility antigens in Egyptians with cutaneous leishmaniasis: a preliminary study.

The frequency of human leucocytic antigens (HLA) were studied in 27 patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis to evaluate the role of HLA antigens as genetic markers in the pathogenesis of this protozoal skin infection. A significant statistical association was observed between HLA-A11, -B5 and -B7 antigens and diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis. In conclusion, study of immune response genes could be of value to understand the pathogenic mechanisms responsible for cutaneous leishmaniasis.

[Disseminated cutaneous leishmaniasis revealing human immunodeficiency virus infection].

BACKGROUND: Unlike visceral leishmaniasis, cutaneous leishmaniasis is uncommonly described in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection. Diffuse cutaneous forms due to Leishmania infantum are always accompanied by visceral parasite infection. CASE REPORT: We report a case of cutaneous leishmaniasis without visceral extension which was the inaugural sign of immunodeficiency virus infection. Polymerase chain reaction amplification of the genome was used to identify Leishmania infantum. Pentamidine (2 injections at the dose of 4 mg/kg, separated by one week) followed by maintenance th

Differing antibody IgG isotypes in the polar forms of leprosy and cutaneous leishmaniasis characterized by antigen-specific T cell anergy.

Leprosy and American cutaneous leishmaniasis are tropical diseases which present a spectrum of clinical and immunological manifestations. Lepromatous leprosy and diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis are the severe, progressive polar forms of disease characterized by persistent T cell anergy. Relative concentrations of antibodies belonging to the four IgG isotypes have been determined in these forms of disease as well as active visceral leishmaniasis, which presents transitory T cell anergy. Leishmania-specific IgG4 antibodies predominated in 19/20 sera from patients with diffuse cutaneous leishmani

Unusual presentation of mucocutaneous leishmaniasis in HIV-infected patient.

Leishmaniasis is caused by protozoan parasite of genus leishmania. Visceral leishmaniasis, diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis, and atypical forms of cutaneous leishmaniasis are common in HIV-infected patients. Our patient presented with an obstructive mass in nasal cavity and was diagnosed as a case of mucocutaneous leishmaniasis. Spontaneous healing of lesions in HIV-infected patients is rare rather they are unresponsive to treatment and have frequent relapses, especially in patients with low CD4 count. However, in our patient, the lesion improved significantly after 2 months of highly active an

Clinical and immunopathological spectrum of American cutaneous leishmaniasis with special reference to the disease in Amazonian Brazil: a review.

The wide variety of Leishmania species responsible for human American cutaneous leishmaniasis combined with the immune mechanisms of the host results in a large spectrum of clinical, histopathological, and immunopathological manifestations. At the middle of this spectrum are the most frequent cases of localized cutaneous leishmaniasis (LCL) caused by members of the subgenera Leishmania and Viannia, which respond well to conventional therapy. The two pathogenicity extremes of the spectrum generally recognized are represented at the hypersensitivity pole by mucocutaneous leishmaniasis (MCL) and

Cutaneous leishmaniasis: A case report.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is the most common form of leishmaniasis caused by flagellate protozoa of the genus Leishmania transmitted by sand fly bites. Old World leishmaniasis is endemic in the Mediterranean Sea and the neighbouring countries. We present a case of a 10-year-old boy with a cutaneous leishmaniasis in form of papules on the nose, right and left lower leg. Histopathological examination showed diffuse dermal infiltrate predominantly of macrophages with admixture of few lymphocytes, eosinophils and plasma cells. In most of macrophages amastigotes were seen. Because of higher rate of t
