A Component-Based Leisure Activity Assessment for Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Preliminary Investigation.

Reference values for Fatty Acids (FAs) are not well defined in the Indian population. Therefore, it is critical to establish FAs reference range for the healthy non-pregnant and pregnant Indian population. The present multi-centric, and cross-sectional study determines the 95% reference interval for FAs in an apparently pregnant Indian population and compare it to the healthy non-pregnant women. Physicians identified 164 reference individuals as healthy (56 non-pregnant and 108 pregnant) at various government and private hospitals of northern India. The 95th and 97.5th percentile reference lim

Causal relationships of physical activity and leisure sedentary behaviors with COPD: A Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have been linked to low levels of physical activity (PA) and higher frequency of leisure sedentary behavior (LSB). The main causes of COPD include respiratory and peripheral muscle dysfunction, low levels of PA, and LSB which are associated with a higher risk of developing COPD. The attribution relationship between PA or LSB and COPD risk or COPD respiratory insufficiency is unclear. To explore this further, we conducted a Mendelian randomization (MR) study using a genotype-simulated randomized trial group to sys

Why are some groups physically active and others not? A contrast group analysis in leisure settings.

BACKGROUND: This field study aims to investigate the determinants of physical activity of particularly active and inactive groups in their leisure environments. In order to consider the context in which physical activity occurs and to investigate whether cultural settings may influence physical activity, we conducted the study at pools in different cultural environments - Hawai'i and Germany. METHODS: This study presents the quantitative data of a systematic (covert) participant observation. We recorded the physical activity of face-to-face interacting groups and analysed categories such as g

Leisure-Time Physical Activity and Risk of Fracture: A Cohort Study of 66,940 Men and Women.

Physical activity has been associated with reduced risk of fracture, but it is not known how the intensity or frequency of physical activity influences this risk reduction. We aim to compare the risk of hip fracture and fracture of any locale between men and women with different levels of leisure-time walking/bicycling and exercise. A total of 37,238 women (born 1914-1948) from the Swedish Mammography Cohort and 45,906 men (born 1918-1952) from the Cohort of Swedish Men were followed for a maximum of 17 years. Exposure and covariate information was collected through a self-administered questio

Maternal Leisure-time Physical Activity and Risk of Preterm Birth: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

PURPOSE: Heart-rate variability (HRV) as a measure of autonomic function may increase in response to training interventions leading to increases or decreases in performance, making HRV interpretation difficult in isolation. This study aimed to contextualize changes in HRV with subjective measures of training tolerance. METHODS: Supine and standing measures of vagally mediated HRV (root-mean-square difference of successive normal RR intervals [RMSSD]) and measures of training tolerance (Daily Analysis of Life Demands for Athletes questionnaire, perception of energy levels, fatigue, and muscle

Leisure time activity as a determinant of survival: a 26-year follow-up of a Swedish cohort.

An individual's leisure time (pastime) engagements are in a way important for society. Irrespective of whether leisure time activities are causal determinants of health or health is a prerequisite for taking full part in society, the interaction is a challenge for Public Health. The first question is whether the sum of their influence results in coherence between enjoying good health and having leisure time activity. The aim of this study was to estimate their covariance.A random sample was drawn from the adult population of Stockholm County, Sweden. The residents were mailed a questionnaire r

Leisure-time physical activity and psychosocial well-being in adolescents after cancer diagnosis.

This preliminary study examined the relationship between leisure time physical activity (LTPA) and psychosocial well-being in 53 adolescents who were previously diagnosed with cancer. Participants completed a mailed, self-administered questionnaire in which they recalled their LTPA (including leisure time exercise and organized sport) at three time points (prediagnosis, treatment, and posttreatment). They also reported their current psychosocial well-being by using measures of depression and self-concept. Examination of the LTPA data revealed four main patterns across the cancer experience tha

Mental and chronological age as predictors of age-appropriate leisure activity in children with mental retardation.

Effects of MA and CA on everyday leisure-time behaviors of children with mild and moderate mental retardation were examined by comparing 40 children with mental retardation to groups of 40 MA- and 40 CA-matched children without mental retardation on an adult-reported scale. Child's overall score, highest single behavior performed by the child, and highest behavior not performed because it was considered below the child's level were measured. Children with retardation performed most similarly to their MA-matches and well-below levels of CA-matches. Older children received higher scores in all g

Social networks, social isolation and leisure-time physical activity in Brazilian adolescent students.

The objective of this article is to investigate the association between social networks, social isolation, and leisure-time physical activity among Brazilian schoolchildren. This national cross-sectional study included 101,927 9th-grade students (aged 13-15) from 3,040 schools. Leisure-time physical activity was assessed based on frequency and duration over the previous seven days and categorized into four levels: ≥300, 150-299, 1-149, and 0 minutes per week. Social isolation and social networks were measured by the frequency of feeling lonely and the number of close friends. Multinomial logis

Association of Sex and Race With Leisure Physical Activity Among Adults After Myocardial Infarction.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about leisure physical activity (PA) behavior among people with previous myocardial infarction. This cross-sectional study within a cohort compared leisure PA behavior between women and men ≤61-year post myocardial infarction, overall and by race. We also examined factors that explain low leisure PA by sex-race category. METHODS: We used data of participants from the second and third waves of the Myocardial Infarction and Mental Stress Study. Least squares means of the Baecke Habitual Physical Activity Questionnaire (leisure component) were estimated for 4 sex-race

The relationship between leisure time physical activity patterns, Alzheimer's disease markers and cognition.

We assessed the association between leisure time physical activity patterns across 30 years of adulthood with a range of in vivo Alzheimer's disease-related neurodegenerative markers and cognition, and their interplay, at age 70. Participants from the 1946 British birth cohort study prospectively reported leisure time physical activity five times between ages 36 and 69 and were dichotomized into (i) not active (no participation/month) and (ii) active (participated once or more/month) and further derived into: (0) never active (not active); (1) active before 50's only (≤43 years); (2) active fr

Leisure-time physical activity after diagnosis and survival by cancer type: a pooled analysis.

BACKGROUND: Evidence for potential mortality benefits of leisure-time moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA) for survivors of cancer types beyond breast and colorectal is limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate relationships between postdiagnosis MVPA and all-cause mortality in participants with a history of 11 cancer types. METHODS: Data were pooled from 6 United States-based cohort studies. Cohort-specific hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for associations of MVPA assessed ≥1 year after a cancer diagnosis and all-cause mortality were calculated u

Green physical activity for leisure connects perceived residential greenspace and mental well-being.

Physical activity serves as a pivotal mediator in previous theoretical frameworks that link greenspace and human health. However, it remains unclear whether the domain of physical activity within and around greenspaces can alter the pathway. The present study recruited 668 participants online and examined a conceptual framework that explores the associations between residential greenspace and mental well-being, with a particular focus on the mediation effect of green physical activity (physical activity undertaken in and around greenspaces). Moreover, socio-demographic characteristics, includi

Assessment of Leisure Time Physical Activity and Brain Health in a Multiethnic Cohort of Older Adults.

IMPORTANCE: Results from longitudinal studies suggest that regular leisure time physical activity (LTPA) is associated with reduced risk of dementia or Alzheimer disease. Data on the association between LTPA and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measures remain scarce and inconsistent. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of LTPA and MRI-assessed brain aging measures in a multiethnic elderly population. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study included 1443 older (≥65 years) adults without dementia who were participants of the Washington/Hamilton Heights-Inwood Col

Association between breast cancer risk and leisure physical activity in a rural cohort population.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity has been identified as a modifiable risk factor for breast cancer. Varying definitions of physical activity have made the evaluation difficult to analyze. In a state with high prevalence of obesity and elevated rates of breast cancer incidence and mortality, physical activity may be an important element for risk reduction. Women's participation in physical activity and the relation to breast cancer incidence has rarely been determined in the southern states where obesity are prevalent. METHODS: Associations between various levels of physical activity and incident
