Clinical Features and Outcomes of Treatment for Effusive Feline Infectious Peritonitis with GS-441524 in Seventeen Retrovirus-Positive Cats.

BACKGROUND: There is limited information about treatment success and outcomes in retrovirus-positive cats diagnosed with feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). METHODS: A survey was distributed to caretakers of cats with feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and/or feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) that were treated with GS-441524 for presumptive effusive FIP based on survey responses. RESULTS: Cats with FIV developed FIP at an older age and longer after retrovirus infection than cats with FeLV. The average starting dosage (7 mg/kg/d) was increased in 65% of cats, and treatment was extended in 35%. T

Ocular manifestations of feline viral diseases.

Feline viral diseases are common and cats can be presented with a variety of clinical manifestations. Ocular disease associated with viral pathogens is not unusual, particularly with viruses causing upper respiratory tract disease in cats, such as feline herpesvirus type 1 and feline calicivirus. These agents mainly cause ocular surface disease. Other viruses, such as feline immunodeficiency virus and feline coronavirus, can cause uveitis, while feline leukemia virus can induce ocular lymphosarcoma. This review covers the most common viral pathogens of cats that cause ocular manifestations, th

A case of acute monocytic leukemia (AMoL or AML-M5) in an adult FeLV/FIV-positive cat.

A 7-year-old castrated male domestic shorthair cat was presented for evaluation of decreased appetite and respiratory signs. A CBC run on presentation revealed severe nonregenerative anemia, thrombocytopenia, and leukocytosis characterized by a prominent population of blasts, having morphologic features suggestive of a monocytic lineage. The cat tested positive for FIV, FeLV, Mycoplasma haemominutum, and only mild abnormalities were identified on the chemistry panel. Bone marrow biopsies were obtained to investigate the bicytopenia and the possibility of a hematopoietic neoplasm. Although the

Long-term impact on a closed household of pet cats of natural infection with feline coronavirus, feline leukaemia virus and feline immunodeficiency virus.

A closed household of 26 cats in which feline coronavirus (FCoV), feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) were endemic was observed for 10 years. Each cat was seropositive for FCoV on at least one occasion and the infection was maintained by reinfection. After 10 years, three of six surviving cats were still seropositive. Only one cat, which was also infected with FIV, developed feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). Rising anti-FCoV antibody titres did not indicate that the cat would develop FIP. The FeLV infection was self-limiting because all seven of the initial

Haematogenous spread of Sporothrix schenckii in cats with naturally acquired sporotrichosis.

The recovery of Sporothrix schenckii from blood samples is rare, and the diagnosis of systemic sporotrichosis is usually made at necropsy. In this report, S schenckii was isolated from two or more internal organs of nine necropsied cats with naturally acquired sporotrichosis. Haematogenous spread was demonstrated in vivo by the isolation of S schenckii from the peripheral blood of 17 (n = 49, 34.4 per cent) cats. Feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) was not detected, and co-infection with feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), observed in nine cases (n = 43, 20.9 per cent), apparently did not affect th

Use of recombinant interferon omega in feline retrovirosis: from theory to practice.

Type-I interferons (IFNs) are cytokines that have non-specific antiviral activity, participating mostly in innate defense mechanisms. Their administration has been proposed to treat several viral and immunomediated diseases as an immunomodulatory therapy. Due to its availability, recombinant human interferon-alpha (rHuIFN-α) has been studied in relation to feline retrovirosis, both in vitro and in vivo. However, IFNs are species-specific and antibodies have been shown to develop in response to the high rHuIFN-α doses necessary for an effective therapy. A recombinant feline IFN has been develop

A case of feline neurolymphomatosis: pathological and molecular investigations.

Neurolymphomatosis is a very rare form of nervous system infiltration by lymphoma that can affect cranial and peripheral nerves and spinal nerve roots. The clinical appearance can mimic autoimmune or paraneoplastic neuropathies. To date, only 2 cases of neurolymphomatosis have been reported in the veterinary literature (1 dog and 1 cat). A case of neurolymphomatosis in a 5-year-old female Domestic Shorthair cat is reported. Two, whitish, bosselated, non-symmetric masses (1 cm × 1.2 cm × 0.5 cm) that incorporated almost all cranial nerves and semilunar ganglia occupying the basisphenoid depress

Intra-host diversity of proviral FeLV and clinical outcomes.

Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is a retrovirus associated with a variety of clinical conditions, including either regenerative or non-regenerative anemia. The high mutation rate of retroviruses promotes the formation of quasispecies — populations composed of multiple genetically related haplotypes — which drives the evolution of the viral population within a host and can impact on disease development. This study investigated the intra-host diversity of proviral FeLV and evaluated their impact on the hematological parameters in naturally infected cats. Twenty-seven blood samples from FeLV-positiv

Hematologic abnormalities associated with retroviral infections in the cat.

Feline patients with unexplained peripheral blood cytopenias, circulating immature or neoplastic cells, dysplastic or dysmorphic bone marrow abnormalities, and/or lymphoid tumors are likely suffering from an underlying retroviral infection with feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and/or feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). Cytopenic hematologic disorders are often caused by the direct or indirect hematosuppressive effects of these retroviruses. Alternatively, secondary infections, nutritional deficiencies, and/or hematopoietic neoplasms may be important cofactors in the development of blood and bone

Molecular detection of feline viruses in free-ranging European wildcats (Felis s. silvestris) of the Harz Mountains, Germany.

Many infectious diseases commonly affecting domestic cats may pose potential threats to wild felid populations. Several established contagious feline viruses - including feline leukemia virus (FeLV), feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), feline coronavirus (FCoV), feline calicivirus (FCV), feline herpesvirus (FHV), and feline parvovirus (FPV) - are well-known drivers of disease epidemiology. In addition, recently identified agents such as feline circovirus (FeCV), feline morbillivirus (FeMV) and other novel paramyxoviruses as well as polyomaviruses may represent emerging risks to wild populatio

Epizootiologic investigations of selected infectious disease agents in free-ranging Eurasian lynx from Sweden.

Serum samples from 106 Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) from across Sweden, found dead or shot by hunters in 1993-99, were investigated for presence of antibodies to feline parvovirus (FPV), feline coronavirus, feline calicivirus, feline herpesvirus, feline immunodeficiency virus, Francisella tularensis, and Anaplasma phagocytophila, and for feline leukemia virus antigen. In addition, tissue samples from 22 lynx submitted in 1999 were analyzed by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect nucleic acids specific for viral agents and A. phagocytophila. Except for FPV antibodies in one lynx and

Diagnosing feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) infection: an update for clinicians.

With the commercial release in Australia in 2004 of a vaccine against feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV; Fel-O-Vax FIV®), the landscape for FIV diagnostics shifted substantially. Point-of-care (PoC) antibody detection kits, which had been the mainstay for diagnosing FIV infection since the early 1990s, were no longer considered accurate to use in FIV-vaccinated cats, because of the production of vaccine-induced antibodies that were considered indistinguishable from those produced in natural FIV infections. Consequently, attention shifted to alternative diagnostic methods such as nucleic acid

Molecular survey of Bartonella henselae and Bartonella clarridgeiae in pet cats across Japan by species-specific nested-PCR.

Cats are known to be the main reservoir for Bartonella henselae and Bartonella clarridgeiae, which are the agents of 'cat-scratch disease' in humans. In the present study, we investigated the prevalence of the two Bartonella species on 1754 cat bloods collected from all prefectures in Japan during 2007-2008 by a nested-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeting the 16S-23S rRNA internal transcribed spacer region. Overall, Bartonella DNA was detected in 4·6% (80/1754) of the cats examined. The nested-PCR showed that 48·8% (39/80) of the positive cats were infected with B. henselae mono-infection

Feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) infection in domestic pet cats in Australia and New Zealand: Guidelines for diagnosis, prevention and management.

Progressive feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) infection dramatically shortens the lives of infected cats, causing acquired immunodeficiency, aplastic anaemia, lymphoma, leukaemia and other myeloproliferative diseases. The potential impact of regressive FeLV infection on the development of disease remains largely unknown, although there is evidence it contributes to lymphoma development. Despite a perception that there has been a general decline in the incidence of progressive FeLV infection in Australia and New Zealand, it remains an important health threat and the risk of infection should not be

Antibody responses to feline leukaemia vaccination: exploring the effect of sex, boosting schedule, site of administration and vaccine type.

ObjectivesHistorically, vaccines have been administered in the dorsal interscapular region of cats (the 'scruff' of the neck) owing to easy access to the subcutaneous space. In response to concerns about sarcomas developing at injection sites (feline injection site sarcomas [FISSs]), and a possible association between feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) vaccination and the development of FISS, alternative FeLV vaccination sites such as the distal left hindlimb and tail have been proposed by influential vaccination bodies and various key opinion leaders. There is a dearth of evidence, however, to dem

An exceptional case of peritoneal cystic echinococcosis in a domestic cat in Australia.

A case of peritoneal cystic echinococcosis (CE) in a domestic cat was reported from Queensland, Australia. Physical examination of the cat indicated a large, distended abdomen, which when palpated appeared to be fluid-filled. Ultrasonography showed numerous cysts with hyperechoic walls and anechoic contents within the cat's abdominal cavity. Whole mount microscopy and histology, together with molecular identification of the contents based on mitochondrial DNA gene sequencing indicated that the causative agent was Echinococcus granulosus (sensu stricto) (genotype G1). Moreover, the cat was also

Monitoring Seroprevalence of Infectious Diseases in the Florida Panther (Puma concolor coryi).

Infectious diseases can have detrimental effects on wildlife populations, particularly those that persist at small sizes, have low genetic diversity, and are affected by fragmented habitat. One such example is the endangered Florida panther (Puma concolor coryi), which has been intensively managed since the early 1980s, with the current population ranging between 120 and 230 individuals. For more than three decades, panthers have been captured, demographics recorded, and blood samples collected to monitor for multiple infectious diseases; however, an updated comprehensive study of many of thes

Serological survey of Toxoplasma gondii infection in domestic cats from northeastern Portugal.

Cats are very important hosts in the epidemiological cycle of Toxoplasma gondii, a zoonotic protozoan parasite that can infect humans and many other animal species worldwide. We report a serological survey of antibodies to T. gondii in domestic cats from northeastern Portugal, by means of the modified agglutination test. Three cats had titres of 20 (3.9%), 18 had titres of 40 (23.7%) and 55 animals had titres of > or =800 (72.4%). Results of three seropositive kittens with less than 4 months were not considered for determining the seroprevalence of infection, which was found to be 35.8% (73/20
