Leukemoid reaction and chronic lung disease in infants with very low birth weight.

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the relationship between the leukemoid reaction and chronic lung disease in very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants. METHODS: Neonates born weighing less than 1500 g without evidence of congenital anomalies and admitted to our hospital from October 1985 to December 1999 comprised our study. Leukemoid reaction was defined as a peripheral white blood cell (WBC) count of > or = 50 x 10(3)/microl. The infants who demonstrated a leukemoid reaction formed the study group, while the remainder formed the control group. The relationship between neonatal variables and WBC counts was

Paraneoplastic leukemoid reaction in a patient with sarcomatoid hepatocellular carcinoma: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Sarcomatoid hepatocellular carcinoma (SHC) combined with paraneoplastic leukemoid reaction (PLR), which is associated with a poor prognosis, is rarely seen in the clinic. Here, we report the case of a patient in the above situation. CASE SUMMARY: A 75-year-old female patient with a past medical history of hypertension and cerebral infarction paid a hospital visit as a result of right upper quadrant abdominal pain and anorexia for two months. Laboratory examination revealed a white blood cell (WBC) count of 43790/μL, which was then increased up to 77050/μL. In addition, the results

An unusual pustular eruption in an infant with Down syndrome and a congenital leukemoid reaction.

Congenital leukemia and leukemoid reactions may be indistinguishable on clinical and histologic grounds and are highly associated with trisomy 21. This report characterizes a specific vesiculopustular skin eruption in an infant with Down syndrome and a congenital leukemoid reaction. On the first day of life an unusual vesiculopustular eruption developed, starting in areas of cutaneous trauma. A biopsy revealed immature myeloid cells in an epidermal spongiotic vesiculopustule and in a perivascular distribution, suggestive of leukemia cutis. As the peripheral blood smear normalized, the eruption

Cytokine alterations during paraneoplastic neutrophilia and leukemoid reaction in patients with advanced melanoma.

BACKGROUND: Paraneoplastic leukemoid reaction (PLR) is a rare phenomenon in metastasized melanoma associated with poor prognosis and rapid disease progression. Currently, no specific therapeutic options exist other than treating the underlying malignancy. METHODS: Five cases of paraneoplastic neutrophilia in patients with advanced-stage IV melanoma were enrolled in our study. Cytokine concentrations in patients' serum samples were analyzed before and during PLR using a multiplex cytokine array. Further, immunohistochemical staining of tumor tissue biopsied during PLR was performed. RESULTS A

A rare presentation of scrub typhus: myocarditis, acute liver failure and leukemoid reaction.

Scrub typhus is a mite borne zoonosis, caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi, a gram-negative intracellular organism. This infection usually presents in high prevalence in the rural areas of East Asia and Western pacific islands. It usually presents with fever, chill, myalgia, headache, skin rashes, having pathognomonic and skin lesion i.e. eschar in ~10% cases in Indian subcontinent. It can present with life-threatening complications on occasional. The simultaneous presentation of more than two complications is uncommon, rarely reported in literature. Here we report a case of 37-year-old woman wit

Two cases of Leukemoid reaction in premature infants caused by fetal inflammatory response syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Fetal inflammatory response syndrome (FIRS) is a systemic inflammatory response caused by the activation of the fetal immune system. The serological diagnostic criterion for fetal inflammatory response syndrome is a cord blood interleukin-6 concentration that exceeds 11 pg/mL, while pathologic evidence indicates the presence of funisitis or chorionic vasculitis. It can affect all systems of the fetus. Alterations in patients' hematopoietic system are primarily reflected by changes in peripheral blood leukocyte and neutrophil counts. CASE PRESENTATION: We performed placental pathol

[Hypercalcemia, leukemoid reaction, and thrombocytosis as paraneoplastic presentation of transitional cell carcinoma of the kidney].

The most common etiologies of hypercalcemia are hyperparathyroidism or malignancy, most often of the lung, breast or hematological system, but rarely occur in transitional cell carcinoma. The appearance of this metabolic disorder and other paraneoplastic signs like leukemoid reaction or thrombocytosis is a potential marker for malignant behaviour and poor prognosis in advanced tumours. Simultaneous presentation of that three paraneoplastic signs have only been described in two patients with wellknown bladder carcinoma. Most paraneoplastic syndromes appear only during the late stages of maligna

Leukemoid reaction resulting from multiple cytokine production in metastatic mucoepidermoid carcinoma with central necrosis.

We report a male patient with metastatic high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma and associated leukemoid reaction. The patient was transferred to our hospital due to persistent spiking fever, marked granulocytosis, and suspected liver abscess. After thorough bacteriological studies, including cultures of blood and material aspirated from the "liver abscess", no evidence of infection was documented. The patient suffered from persistent spiking fever for more than 4 weeks in spite of empirical antibiotic treatment, and repeated aspiration of the presupposed liver abscess. He underwent exploratory l

Steroidal management and serum cytokine profile of a case of alcoholic hepatitis with leukemoid reaction.

Leukemoid reactions (LRs) are rare in alcoholic hepatitis (AH), but they are a sign of poor prognosis. The treatment of AH with corticosteroids is controversial, though several reports suggest that these should be used in severe cases of AH. We report a case of AH-associated LRs that presented with an increase of the serum concentrations of the proinflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-18 (an initiator of inflammation) and IL-1beta (likely responsible for the neutrophilia of the LRs). These findings provided a pathogenic indication for the use of corticosteroids (that block the transcription

Paraneoplastic Leukemoid Reaction in Lung Adenocarcinoma With Multi-lineage Granulocytic Abnormalities and Eosinophilic Pleural Effusion.

This report describes a rare and lethal phenotype of paraneoplastic leukemoid reaction (PLR) in lung adenocarcinoma, defined by a triad of multi-lineage myeloid proliferation, marked eosinophilic malignant pleural effusion, and progressive lymphopenia. The patient presented with a hyper-aggressive clinical course, culminating in a fatal outcome within 12 days, suggesting an underlying multi-cytokine storm. Clinically, this triad serves as a critical alert for distinguishing PLR from infection and underscores the importance of early bone marrow evaluation for rapid diagnosis. This case highligh

Hyperleukocytosis, leukemoid reaction caused by malignant peritoneal mesothelioma: a case report and review of literature.

Paraneoplastic leukemoid reaction (PLR)-induced hyperleukocytosis remains a critical diagnostic challenge. Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma, known for its nonspecific clinical presentation, often evades early detection. We report a 75-year-old male with cirrhosis presenting with fever (38.2°C), progressive ascites, leukocytosis (109.9×109/L), and elevated CRP (247.41 mg/L). Initial diagnosis of spontaneous peritonitis failed to explain the leukocytosis, prompting bone marrow examination, including cytomorphology and genetic analysis, which turned out do not support a diagnosis of leukemia or

[Dramatic response to encorafenib plus binimetinib in a patient with leukemoid reaction from metastatic melanoma.].

Paraneoplastic leukemoid reaction (PLR) is an extremely rare condition in patients with melanoma and it is frequently associated with poor prognosis. BRAF gene mutational analysis represents the gold standard in patients with inoperable or metastatic melanoma as the possible presence of target mutations allows the use of the combination treatment with BRAF and MEK inhibitors. In this article, the case of a young woman with BRAF V600E mutated metastatic melanoma associated with PLR who received encorafenib and binimetinib is presented and discussed, with a focus on the relevant treatment respon
