OBJECTIVE: To report the case of a patient with a virilizing ovarian Leydig cell tumor and subclinical Cushing syndrome attributable to an adrenal adenoma.
METHODS: Detailed clinical, laboratory, radiologic, and pathologic findings are presented, and the pertinent literature is reviewed.
RESULTS: A 49-year-old woman was referred for evaluation of a left adrenal mass (3.0 by 2.4 cm), which had been diagnosed by computed tomographic scan 4 years previously during a work-up for hirsutism. On examination, she had central obesity, facial hirsutism, and male pattern baldness. Work-up showed elevat

A 8(6/12) year-old-boy presented with precocious puberty and a slightly enlarged left testis. After a detailed examination a Leydig cell tumour was diagnosed. Surgical exploration revealed an encapsulated tumour, 2.7 cm in length, which was selectively removed without orchidectomy. Within one year the clinical signs of pubertal precocity disappeared, the bone age did not further advance and height velocity declined from 8.2 cm / year (+3.9 SDS) to 4.1 cm/year (-1.0 SDS). Physiologically, he entered puberty at the chronological age of twelve years, presenting at that age, in comparison to his p

Three cases of Leydig cell tumor are described. Patient ages were 27, 44 and 55 years, respectively. The first two patients consulted for a testicular mass and the third patient presented with gynecomastia, an incidental finding during the ultrasound work up of a hydrocele. Hormonal evaluation revealed a marked serum testosterone level in one case, whereas in another case it fell within the lower limits of normal ranges. No evidence of dissemination was observed in all patients. Treatment was by radical inguinal orchiectomy in all patients. The pathological analysis of the surgical specimens r

A Leydig (Hilus)-cell tumor of the ovary was diagnosed in a 54-year-old woman with severe hirsutism and virilization. This case is unique in that it was diagnosed in a postmenopausal female 24 years after ovarian irradiation for sterilization, and the tumor was successfully localized preoperatively using 131I-19-iodocholesterol scintigraphy. This nuclear scanning technique may be of use in documenting the biologic activity of ovarian masses and in localizing functioning ovarian tumors which are too small to palpate or to localize by other means.

A case of Leydig cell tumor is reported and discussed. The tumor, 1.5 cm in diameter, was located in the capsule of the right testis. Gynecomastia present for 3 months was almost absent 4 months postoperatively. Preoperative hormone analysis revealed a low concentration of serum testosterone, which was normalized 1 week postoperatively. In electron microscopic examination, several intracytoplasmic microbody-like structures and 'tigroid' mitochondria were noted. These findings are similar to the three earlier descriptions of Leydig cell tumors.

A normally-virilized 24-year-old white man who had gynecomastia was found to have a Leydig-cell tumor of the testis, without demonstrable metastases. Hormonal evaluation revealed negative serum and urine tests for human chorionic gonadotropin, and normal steroid excretion. Prior to orchiectomy, serum estradiol was elevated and serum testosterone depressed; postoperatively these values reverted to normal. Attempts to quantitative the estradiol content of the tumor failed to show a significant increase over normal testicular tissue, however. Histologically, the tumor showed classic Reinke crysta

Leydig cell tumors arise from the gonadal stroma and represent two or three per cent of all testicular tumors. They may occur at any age in contrast with germinal tumor. In adults, about 20 per cent occur with endocrine disturbance: gynecomastia or impotence. Ten per cent are malignant and few cases are bilateral. They are small, yellow, brown tumor. Reinke's crystals are observed in 50 per cent and are pathognomonic. They present no necrosis no hemorrhage, no cyst. A benign tumor is difficult to distinguish from a malignant tumor. A vascular and capsular invasion, an infiltrative margin, a bi

Leydig cell tumors (LCTs) and Sertoli cell tumors (SCTs) are the two most common sex cord-stromal tumors of the testis, and can exhibit overlapping histologic and immunophenotypic features, creating diagnostic challenges. Currently, differential diagnosis of these two tumors relies primarily on histological features, with no reliable immunohistochemical markers available. B72.3 is a widely used immunohistochemical antibody recognizing tumor-associated glycoprotein 72 (TAG-72) expressed in a broad range of normal and tumor tissues. Incidentally, we observed that B72.3 specifically stains the Le

BACKGROUND: DICER1 mutation has been linked to development of Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor and cystic nephroma, among other neoplasms.
CASE: We present a unique case of recurrent ovarian Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor in a pediatric patient with a known DICER1 mutation and history of cystic nephroma. She underwent surgical staging and adjuvant chemotherapy, and her recurrences have been treated with chemotherapy, whole-abdomen radiation therapy, and further surgical debulking.
CONCLUSION: This report adds to the small body of evidence about this rare but unexpectedly highly aggressive tumor, especia

Testicle tumors are a rare entity among men population, accounting for only 1-1.5% of all can-cers among men. The stromal tumors of the sexual cord correspond just 4% of all testicular cancers. Only 10% of them are malignant. The major representative of the sex cord-stromal tumors is the Leydig cell tumor, corresponding to 75 to 80% of the total. It has bimodal age incidence, involving children and adults between 30 and 60 years. We report the caso of a 91-year-old man with malignant Leydig cell tumor, presenting increase of the volume of scrotum, local pain and hyperemia. The are few cases in

Leydig cell tumors (LCTs) are rare tumors arising from testosterone-producing Leydig cells. Although LCTs are usually benign, malignancy has been reported in 10% of cases in adults, and local recurrence or metachronous tumors of the contralateral testis have been described. Radical orchiectomy is the current standard of care. We report on 12 children with LCT at 3 institutions between 2000 and 2016. Presenting symptoms included precocious puberty, palpable testicular mass, and scrotal swelling. Radical orchiectomy was performed in 9 patients. Three patients were treated with enucleation. All p

Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors (SLCT) are rare, comprising less than 0.5% of ovarian neoplasms. They are most often diagnosed in premenopausal women and may produce androgens, resulting in hirsuitism, voice deepening, frontal balding, terminal hair growth, and clitoromegaly. SLCT are malignant in 15%-20% of cases. We discuss a 25-year-old patient with persistent hyperandrogenemia. Noninvasive imaging cannot conclusively differentiate between SCLT and other diagnoses such as polycystic ovary syndrome, ovarian hyperthecosis, idiopathic hyperandrogenism, idiopathic hirsuitism, and 21-hydroxylase-defi

BACKGROUND: The androgen-secreting tumors constitute fewer than 1% of ovarian tumors. Leydig cell tumor is one of the most common of this type of lesion and it is usually benign, small and unilateral.
CASE REPORT: A 67 year old woman was referred to the Endocrine clinic due to hirsutism (score 22 Ferriman-Gallwey) and male type alopecia with 3 years of evolution and progressive worsening. Biochemically she had high levels of serum testosterone - 662 ng/dl (N < 62 ng/dl). Transvaginal ultrasonography and abdomen-pelvic CT scan didn't show any signs of adrenal or ovarian tumors. Sertoli leydig cell tumors also known as arrhenoblastoma, are a rare member of the sex cord-stromal tumor group of ovarian and testicular cancers, comprising less than 1% of all ovarian tumors, which occur in young adults and are almost always unilateral. We hereby report a case of a 17-year-old female presenting with a short history of irregular menses and an abdominal lump, which was histologically proven to be a bilateral sertoli leydig cell tumor of the ovary, an exceptionally rare entity in itself.

Virilization in childhood results from an adrenal and/or ovarian disorder. These children usually present with hyperandrogenism: acne, deepening voice, abnormal hair growth, cliteromegaly. Ovarian Leydig cell tumor is a very rare cause of hyperandrogenism in childhood. They are usually benign and surgical treatment is usually curative if the tumor is limited to the ovaries. We present the youngest case of ovarian Leydig cell tumor reported in the literature who presented with hyperandrogenism that was satisfactorily resolved after resective surgery. Rare causes of virilization should be invest

OBJECTIVE: An additional case of testicular Leydig cell tumor in a young man is reported. The clinical presentation included gynecomastia and a testicular mass.
METHODS/RESULTS: Hormonal studies, testicular US and high resolution MRI were performed before orchidectomy. The histopathological findings were consistent with Leydig cell tumor. A CT scan revealed no metastasis. The patient is clinically disease-free 18 months after orchidectomy.
CONCLUSION: High resolution MRI must be performed only when clinic and US findings are discordant.

An ovarian Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor in a 15-year-old girl is reported. The patient had enchondromatosis (Ollier's disease), and a review of the literature revealed a few previous reports linking enchondromatosis with ovarian sex-cord stromal tumors. This association between these two unusual lesions indirectly supports a generalized mesodermal dysplasia in patients with enchondromatosis.

The clinicopathologic findings in nine patients with ovarian Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor with retiform pattern are described. The patients ranged in age from 11 months to 23 years; and seven patients were 12 years of age or younger. The most frequent presenting sign was the finding of an abdominal mass. This was associated with pain in five patients. In three patients the pain was severe due to torsion, causing an acute abdominal emergency. Slight virilization was observed in one patient only. Two patients had elevated serum alphafetoprotein (AFP), which correlated well with disease activity. Th

The effect of chronic hyperestrogenism on gonadal function was studied in three men who had estrogen-secreting Leydig cell tumors before unilateral orchidectomy and for 11-43 months after surgery. All three men had low plasma gonadotropin and testosterone levels and increased estradiol levels. Impairment of testicular steroidogenesis was also suggested by increased progesterone to 17-hydroxyprogesterone and 17-hydroxyprogesterone to androstenedione ratios in both spermatic venous plasma and the medium of Leydig tumor cells from one patient incubated in vitro. Before surgery, spermatogenesis wa
