Factors associated with staff-to-resident abuse in Norwegian nursing homes: a cross-sectional exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Elder abuse is a public health problem that is gaining attention due to its serious impacts on people's health and well-being, and it is predicted to increase along with the world's rapidly ageing population. Staff-to-resident abuse in nursing homes is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon associated with multiple factors on different levels of the ecological model. This study aimed to explore individual, relational, and institutional characteristics associated with perpetrated staff-to-resident abuse in nursing homes, using a multilevel hierarchical approach. METHODS: This was a

Training in aspiration abortion care: An observational cohort study of achieving procedural competence.

BACKGROUND: Studies in multiple countries have found that the provision of aspiration abortion care by trained nurses, midwives, and other front-line health care workers is safe and acceptable to women. In the United States, most state abortion laws restrict the provision of abortion to physicians; nurse practitioners, nurse-midwives, and physician assistants, can legally perform medication abortion in only twelve states and aspiration abortion in five. Expansion of abortion care by these providers, consistent with their scopes of practice, could help alleviate the increasing difficulty of acc

A Hub-and-Spoke Inpatient Model That Preserved Semirural Hospital Access.

In 2024, Suroit Hospital, a semirural hospital in Quebec, Canada, faced the imminent loss of 20 acute care beds following a provincial directive limiting the use of private agency nurses. This immediate workforce shortage threatened essential inpatient services for a geographically isolated population, while surrounding urban hospitals lacked the capacity to absorb diverted patients. To prevent closures, the hospital partnered with the Santé Québec West Central Montreal Health and Social Services University Network (SQ-WCMTL) and its Jewish General Hospital University Centre to rapidly deploy

[Reshaping the Value of Nursing: Toward a Sustainable Future].

Under population aging and rising healthcare demand pressures, the nursing workforce has become even more critical to healthcare system stability. However, Taiwan is currently facing a "dual crisis". Nearly 40% of newly licensed nurses do not enter clinical practice, creating a substantial annual workforce gap, while current staff continue to exit the profession at a high rate due to overwork and poor work-life balance. This vicious cycle poses an existential threat to the foundations of healthcare. It is worth noting that this problem is not unique to Taiwan. Similar challenges have been wide

Nursing Home Characteristics Associated with Antipsychotic Prescribing After Implementation of the National Antipsychotic Reduction Initiative (ARI).

OBJECTIVES: To describe nursing home (NH) characteristics associated with antipsychotic use and test whether associations changed after implementation of the National Partnership to Improve Dementia Care's antipsychotic reduction initiative (ARI). METHODS: Longitudinal quasi-experimental design using data from multiple sources and piecewise linear mixed models were used for statistical analyses. RESULTS: There was a significant decrease in monthly antipsychotic use across the study period (pre-ARI b = -0.0003, p <.001; post-ARI b = -0.0012, p <.001), which held after adjusting for NH charact

Nurses' functional status assessments using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health across hospital types in Japan: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: In Japan, patients receiving treatment in advanced acute care hospitals often cannot return home immediately and require ongoing hospitalization. Sequential support is crucial to facilitate long-term recovery and community reintegration. Therefore, functional assessments should extend beyond physical function to include daily activities and participation. However, how nurses across different hospital types in Japan evaluate patients' functional status using a standardized framework remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study examined how nurses in hospitals with varying care functions

How mental health providers spend their time: a survey of 10 Veterans Health Administration mental health services.

BACKGROUND: Allocation of provider time across clinical, administrative, educational, and research activities may influence job satisfaction, productivity, and quality of care, yet we know little about what determines time allocation. AIMS: To investigate factors associated with time allocation, we surveyed all mental health providers in one Veterans Health Administration (VHA) network. We hypothesized that both facility characteristics (academic affiliation, type of organization of services, serving as a hub for treatment of severely mentally ill, facility size) and individual provider chara

Staffing and Antipsychotic Medication Use in Nursing Homes and Neighborhood Deprivation.

IMPORTANCE: Inappropriate use of antipsychotic medications in nursing homes is a growing public health concern. Residents exposed to higher levels of socioeconomic deprivation in the area around a nursing home may be currently exposed, or have a long history of exposure, to more noise pollution, higher crime rates, and have less opportunities to safely go outside the facility, which may contribute to psychological stress and increased risk of receiving antipsychotic medications inappropriately. However, it is unclear whether neighborhood deprivation is associated with use of inappropriate anti

An epidemiological study of the magnitude and consequences of work related violence: the Minnesota Nurses' Study.

AIMS: To identify the magnitude of and potential risk factors for violence within a major occupational population. METHODS: Comprehensive surveys were sent to 6300 Minnesota licensed registered (RNs) and practical (LPNs) nurses to collect data on physical and non-physical violence for the prior 12 months. Re-weighting enabled adjustment for potential biases associated with non-response, accounting for unknown eligibility. RESULTS: From the 78% responding, combined with non-response rate information, respective adjusted rates per 100 persons per year (95% CI) for physical and non-physical vio

Coccidioidomycosis: knowledge, attitudes, and practices among healthcare providers--Arizona, 2007.

Coccidioidomycosis presumably causes ≤ 33% of community-acquired pneumonias cases, although < 15% of the patients are tested for coccidioidomycosis. We assessed healthcare providers' knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding coccidioidomycosis diagnosis and treatment in Arizona. A survey was mailed to 7,608 eligible healthcare providers licensed by the Arizona medical, osteopathic, and nursing boards in October and December 2007. We used weights to adjust for non-response and multivariate logistic regression models to identify predictors of ≥ 70% correct regarding knowledge and treatment p

Hand hygiene knowledge, perception, and self-reported practice among healthcare workers in a tertiary care hospital: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Hand hygiene (HH) regimens significantly prevent the spread of healthcare-associated infections and multidrug-resistant organisms. Practising correct HH is crucial in achieving the target of near-zero infections. Globally, HH compliance rates among healthcare workers (HCWs) remain suboptimal. This study aimed to evaluate HCWs' hand hygiene knowledge, perception and self-reported practice and their correlations in a tertiary care hospital in Qatar. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted at Al Ahli Hospital, an Australian Council on Healthcare Standards International (ACHSI)

Overview and current management of computerized adaptive testing in licensing/certification examinations.

Computerized adaptive testing (CAT) has been implemented in high-stakes examinations such as the National Council Licensure Examination-Registered Nurses in the United States since 1994. Subsequently, the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians in the United States adopted CAT for certifying emergency medical technicians in 2007. This was done with the goal of introducing the implementation of CAT for medical health licensing examinations. Most implementations of CAT are based on item response theory, which hypothesizes that both the examinee and items have their own characteristics

Protocol-based nurse coordinator management of ambulatory tacrolimus dosing in de novo renal transplant recipients-A single-center experience with a large African American population.

INTRODUCTION: Transplant nurse (RN) coordinators review tacrolimus levels frequently and would be capable of making dose adjustments autonomously if not limited by their license. Collaborative practice agreements could be an answer; thus, the aim of this evaluation was to determine if an RN-driven protocol could be used safely and effectively to manage tacrolimus in ambulatory kidney transplant (KTX) recipients. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of all solitary adult KTX recipients between August 1, 2016, and July 29, 2017. The primary objective was to evaluate protocol adherence and f

Facilitators and Barriers to Care in Rural Emergency Departments in Alberta for Patients on Peritoneal Dialysis (PD): An Interpretive Descriptive Study.

BACKGROUND: Home dialysis offers many advantages to patients, but they require support to manage a home-based therapy such as peritoneal dialysis (PD). A rural emergency department provides an important safety net for patients requiring medical care, including managing complications of PD, such as peritonitis. Patients living in northern Alberta are spread out geographically and can be far from a PD training center, yet anecdotally, many rural sites do not provide care for these patients. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to identify the facilitators and barriers to nursing care in rural emergency depar
