Hydatidosis: dynamics of transmission.

Hydatidosis is a widespread zoonosis infecting a large number of animals and humans. Echinococcus granulosus has the smallest taenia adult of the cestodes but with the largest larva. Its morphologic and biologic features were identified with DNA analysis. Different strains were separated according to the intermediate hosts: sheep, cattle, pigs, horses, camels. Definitive host are canids, mostly dogs, where the worm grows to adulthood in several months. The eggs are scattered in the pasture by wind and water and are ingested by various hosts. The larvae migrate through the intestinal wall and p

Human Strongyloides stercoralis infection.

Strongyloides stercoralis is an important soil-transmitted helminth occurring world-wide and affecting 30-100 million people. Because many cases are asymptomatic and sensitive diagnostic methods are lacking, S. stercoralis infection is frequently underdiagnosed. The increasing incidence of autoimmune and wasting diseases and increased use of immunosuppressive agents, as well as the increased use of immunosuppressants and cytotoxic drugs, have increased S. stercoralis infection and their mortality. This review provides information about S. stercoralis epidemiology, life cycle, aetiology, pathol

Life cycle assessment perspective on waste resource utilization and sustainable development: A case of glyphosate production.

The growing demand for pesticide manufacturing and increasing public awareness of sustainable development, have let to urgent requirements for a refined environmental management framework. It is imperative to conduct process-based life cycle assessments (LCAs) to promote clean and environment-friendly technologies. Herein, the cradle-to-gate LCA of glyphosate production was executed as an example to investigate crucial production factors (materials or energy) and multiple environmental impacts during the production processes. Results showed that methanol caused the highest environmental damage

The developmental trajectories of Toxoplasma stem from an elaborate epigenetic rewiring.

Toxoplasma gondii is considered to be one of the most successful parasitic pathogens. It owes this success to its flexibility in responding to signals emanating from the different environments it encounters during its multihost life cycle. The adaptability of this unicellular organism relies on highly coordinated and evolutionarily optimized developmental abilities that allow it to adopt the forms best suited to the requirements of each environment. Here we discuss recent outstanding studies that have uncovered how master regulators epigenetically regulate the cryptic process of sexual develop

Identification of Fis1 Interactors in Toxoplasma gondii Reveals a Novel Protein Required for Peripheral Distribution of the Mitochondrion.

Toxoplasma gondii's single mitochondrion is very dynamic and undergoes morphological changes throughout the parasite's life cycle. During parasite division, the mitochondrion elongates, enters the daughter cells just prior to cytokinesis, and undergoes fission. Extensive morphological changes also occur as the parasite transitions from the intracellular environment to the extracellular environment. We show that treatment with the ionophore monensin causes reversible constriction of the mitochondrial outer membrane and that this effect depends on the function of the fission-related protein Fis1

Auto-infection by Echinostoma spp. cercariae in Helisoma anceps.

Auto-infection is a life history strategy used by many parasitic organisms, including digenetic trematodes. The process of autoinfection most frequently involves the transfer of a life cycle stage of the parasite from one site to another inside the same host, usually accompanied by morphological transformation. Moreover, among trematodes, the stage being transferred may also move from one host to another in completing the life cycle, i.e., an indirect cycle. Echinostoma spp. parasites offer the opportunity to study auto-infection because they utilize gastropods as both first and second interme

The caligid life cycle: new evidence from Lepeophtheirus elegans reconciles the cycles of Caligus and Lepeophtheirus (Copepoda: Caligidae).

The developmental stages of the sea louse Lepeophtheirus elegans (Copepoda: Caligidae) are described from material collected from marine ranched Korean rockfish, Sebastes schlegelii. In L. elegans, setal number on the proximal segment of the antennule increases from 3 in the copepodid to 27 in the adult. Using the number of setae as a stage marker supports the inference that the post-naupliar phase of the life cycle comprises six stages: copepodid, chalimus I, chalimus II, pre-adult I, pre-adult II, and the adult. We observed variation in body length in both of the chalimus stages which we con

Heterogeneous constraint and adaptation across the malaria parasite life cycle.

Evolutionary forces vary across genomes, creating disparities in how traits evolve. In organisms with complex life cycles, it is unclear how intrinsic differences among discrete life stages impact evolution. Here, we look for life history-driven patterns of adaptation in Plasmodium falciparum, a malaria-causing parasite with a multi-stage life cycle. We posit that notable differences across the P. falciparum life cycle-including cell ploidy, the extent of clonal competition and the presence of transmission bottlenecks-alter the drift-selection balance acting at discrete life stages. The importance of the life cycle perspective for safety assessment in the European Commission's Safe and Sustainable by Design Framework.

The European Commission Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework represents a paradigm shift in innovation by integrating safety and sustainability considerations from the earliest stages of development, guided by a life cycle perspective. A key driver of this shift is the extension of safety beyond siloed considerations towards a comprehensive life cycle approach. However, this extension of safety to the entire life cycle remains insufficiently understood and is often underestimated or even neglected by practitioners, largely due to a lack of understanding of its practical implications

Demystifying Plasmodium development within the Anopheles mosquito.

Plasmodium malaria parasites undergo multiple developmental transitions within Anopheles mosquitoes before being transmitted to the next host. These lifecycle transitions are challenging to study in vivo because of a substantial bottleneck in parasite numbers and an increase in parasite ploidy that can rescue mutant phenotypes. Increasing our understanding of these essential parasite stages could potentially inform their disruption by novel malaria transmission control tools. Here, we aim to summarize how recent technological developments in microscopy, single-cell RNA sequencing, and genetic

Critical thermal maxima of Polistes life stages from different climates, with a critical evaluation of methods.

Ambient temperature is a crucial abiotic factor for ectotherms. It strongly influences development, life and abundance, as well as success in colonizing new habitats. In the eusocial paper wasps Polistes sp., colony-forming insects with open nests, the larvae and pupae have limited options to influence their own body temperature in response to high environmental temperatures. They are dependent on measures taken by the adults to keep it at tolerable levels. We determined the upper thermal limits (CTmax) in field populations of three paper wasp species (Polistes dominula, P. gallicus, P. biglum

Schistosomiasis.

Schistosomiasis is a major cause of morbidity in the world and almost 800 million people worldwide are at risk for schistosomiasis; it is second only to malaria as a major infectious disease. Globally, it is estimated that the disease affects more than 250 million people in 78 countries of the world and is responsible for some 280,000-500,000 deaths each year. The three major schistosomes infecting humans are Schistosoma mansoni, S. japonicum, and S. haematobium. This chapter covers a wide range of aspects of schistosomiasis, including basic biology of the parasites, epidemiology, immunopathol

Taxonomic and life cycle reappraisals of the marine basidiomycete Nia vibrissa complex, with descriptions of three new Nia species.

The marine basidiomycete Nia vibrissa has been regarded as a species complex, possibly including several species, because morphological variations in fruitbody, spore, and spore appendage have been observed in materials from worldwide collections. Using more than 50 monosporic isolates of N. vibrissa-like fungi mainly obtained from Japanese beach coasts, we investigated their molecular phylogeny, morphological characteristics, mating compatibility, nuclear behavior during spore formation, and life cycles. Molecular phylogenetic analyses separated the examined strains into seven clades. Each cl

Natural life cycle of Versteria cuja (Taeniidae) in Argentina and histopathology of metacestodiasis in intermediate hosts.

Using morphological and molecular studies, the life cycle of Versteria cuja (Cestoda: Taeniidae) was elucidated, involving subterranean rodents (Ctenomyidae) as intermediate hosts, and the lesser grison, Galictis cuja (Mustelidae), as definitive host. Metacestodes (cysticerci and polycephalic larvae) were found mainly in the liver but also in spleen, pancreas, lungs and small intestine of 2 species of tuco-tucos (Ctenomys spp.) from Chubut, Argentina. Identity of the metacestodes with the adult was based primarily on the number, size and shape of rostellar hooks: 40–48 hooks in 2 rows, particu

Genetic crosses within and between species of Cryptosporidium.

Parasites and their hosts are engaged in reciprocal coevolution that balances competing mechanisms of virulence, resistance, and evasion. This often leads to host specificity, but genomic reassortment between different strains can enable parasites to jump host barriers and conquer new niches. In the apicomplexan parasite Cryptosporidium, genetic exchange has been hypothesized to play a prominent role in adaptation to humans. The sexual lifecycle of the parasite provides a potential mechanism for such exchange; however, the boundaries of Cryptosporidium sex are currently undefined. To explore t

A splitCas9 phenotypic screen in Toxoplasma gondii identifies proteins involved in host cell egress and invasion.

Apicomplexan parasites, such as Toxoplasma gondii, have specific adaptations that enable invasion and exit from the host cell. Owing to the phylogenetic distance between apicomplexan parasites and model organisms, comparative genomics has limited capacity to infer gene functions. Further, although CRISPR/Cas9-based screens have assigned roles to some Toxoplasma genes, the functions of encoded proteins have proven difficult to assign. To overcome this problem, we devised a conditional Cas9-system in T. gondii that enables phenotypic screens. Using an indicator strain for F-actin dynamics and ap
