Sit-To-Stand Lift: Effects of Lifted Height on Weight Borne and Upper Extremity Strength Requirements.

To prevent back and shoulder injuries to nursing personnel, sit-to-stand lifts are used to transfer partial-weight-bearing patients with upper extremity strength. However, the weight-bearing capacity and upper extremity strength required of patients have not been defined. The objectives of this study were to determine: (a) the percentage of body weight borne by the patient when lifted to different heights in the lift and (b) whether a patient needs upper extremity strength. Nineteen healthy normal-weight volunteers (ages 19-39) were transferred from a hospital bed to a wheelchair using (a) a g

Does the personal lift-assist device affect the local dynamic stability of the spine during lifting?

The personal lift-assist device (PLAD) is an on-body ergonomic aid that reduces low back physical demands through the restorative moment of an external spring element, which possesses a mechanical advantage over the erector spinae. Although the PLAD has proven effective at reducing low back muscular demand, spinal moments, and localized muscular fatigue during laboratory and industrial tasks, the effects of the device on the neuromuscular control of spinal stability during lifting have yet to be assessed. Thirty healthy subjects (15M, 15F) performed repetitive lifting for three minutes, at a r

The effect of an on-body personal lift assist device (PLAD) on fatigue during a repetitive lifting task.

Occupations demanding frequent and heavy lifting are associated with an increased risk of injury. A personal lift assist device (PLAD) was designed to assist human muscles through the use of elastic elements. This study was designed to determine if the PLAD could reduce the level of general and local back muscle fatigue during a cyclical lifting task. Electromyography of two erector spinae sites (T9 and L3) was recorded during a 45-min lifting session at six lifts/lowers per minute in which male participants (n=10) lifted a box scaled to represent 20% of their maximum back extensor strength. Anticipatory control of vertical lifting force and momentum during the squat lift with expected and unexpected loads.

STUDY DESIGN: Mixed, repeated measures design. OBJECTIVES: To determine if previous experience with loads of similar weight influences the anticipatory lifting force and postural adjustments during the squat lift. To examine a multijoint, functional task for coordination between stability and movement. To determine if lifting unexpected loads results in trunk loading patterns associated with greater injury risk. BACKGROUND: Workers are increasingly exposed to variability in materials handling thereby increasing the risk of injury. Understanding the control processes underlying lifting will s

Reverse Knot Technique for Face Lifting With Polydioxanone Thread.

BACKGROUND: The use of polydioxanone thread has grown substantially for facial soft-tissue repositioning and collagen biostimulation, with a well-established safety profile and favorable tissue integration. AIMS: To describe the reverse knot technique, a novel method for the implantation of polydioxanone suspension threads. PATIENTS/METHODS: We present an original polydioxanone thread-lifting technique designed primarily for patients with a "heavy face." The reverse knot technique positions the knot in the anterior portion of the face, below the zygomatic cutaneous ligament, whereas anchorin

Beyond Lifting: Superficial-Targeted Monopolar Radiofrequency for Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea.

Noninvasive monopolar radiofrequency (NMRF) is an established modality for skin tightening, but its role in inflammatory dermatoses such as rosacea remains poorly defined. We report a man in his forties with an erythematotelangiectatic rosacea (ETR) phenotype, characterized by persistent centrofacial erythema, flushing, and xerosis, who underwent two sessions of multifrequency NMRF (XERF; Cynosure Lutronic, Goyang, Korea) at 4-week intervals using an off-label, superficial-targeted protocol (shallow setting, intensity level 5; 6.78 MHz; approximately 250 pulses; approximately 23,000 J cumulati

Basic concepts in facial and neck thread lifting procedures.

In this review article, our objective is to elucidate fundamental principles and offer practical illustrations concerning the procedures involved in facial and neck thread lifting. Moreover, we aim to explore associated concepts such as the fixing point, hanging point, and anchoring point terminologies, along with the elucidation of vectors. Additionally, we will provide anatomically oriented explanations of the lifting process required for each facial region using thread lifting methods like V, U, and I techniques using floating type threads (Secrete line, Hyundai Meditech., Inc., Wonjusi, Re

Fish: a new xenograft source for maxillary sinus lifting.

OBJECTIVE: Although autogenous grafting is accepted as the gold standard in intraoral grafting, xenogenous grafts are frequently used in sinus lift surgeries due to their osteoinductive and osteoconductive properties. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of fish spine-derived xenogenic grafts in sinus augmentation surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this study, a fish spine-derived xenogenic graft was produced for comparison with autogenous graft and bovine derived xenogenic grafts. Twenty-one New Zealand rabbits were used. Autogenous grafts (AG- Group 1), as well as bovine-derived (bHA

Factors associated with non-lifting of colorectal mucosal lesions.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is an effective treatment for colorectal tumors. However, lesions that cannot be lifted after submucosal injection are not indication for ESD. This is because the procedure is difficult, and the lesions are often considered as tumor invasion or submucosal fibrosis. The aims of this study are to evaluate the efficacy and safety of ESD for non-lifting lesions and to analyze the causes of non-lifting phenomenon. METHODS: This retrospective study included 29 patients with non-lifting colon lesions resected by ESD from February 2018 to September 2

A Biomechanical Waist Comfort Model for Manual Material Lifting.

Low back pain (LBP) is a common disorder that affects the working population worldwide. LBP causes more disability than any other conditions all around the world. Most existing studies focus on the occupational physical factors in association with LBP, while few focus on individual factors, especially the lack of quantitative calculation of waist comfort in biomechanics. Based on the physical statistics of Chinese men, this research used human posture analysis (HPA) to establish the waist strength formula and analyzed the waist strength during a manual material handling. It also explored the i

[Lip lifting and philtral restoration with a mustache flap].

The restoration of the philtrum is an often neglected aspect in the technique of labial lifting with a perinasal scar, or it is secondarily resorted to by simple injections of hyaluronic acid. We are not in favor of the classic continuous bull's horn scar because, on the one hand, we consider that most of the labial shortening is due to the nasal floor resection -the internal excursion of which determines the final result-, and on the other hand that the approximation of 2 skins of very different nature (columella and lip) may cause a visible scar. The base of the columella is particularly wel

Posterior shoulder dislocation while lifting weights: a missed diagnosis.

We present a case of a 24-year-old man who suffered acute shoulder pain and subsequent inability to move his arm while lifting weights in the bench-press position. He attended A&E where he was examined and X-rays were performed. He was diagnosed with presumed pectoralis major tendon rupture and was discharged to fracture clinic the following day with analgesia. On review in clinic he was found to have a posterior shoulder dislocation and was taken to theatre for relocation under anaesthesia. This case report examines the mechanism, investigations and management of posterior shoulder dislocatio

[C-type scaphoid fracture in a elite power lifting].

Power lifting injuries most often involve shoulder injuries with an injury rate of 0.57 to 0.71/1000 hours of power lifting. Wrist injuries are less common in power lifters with 0.05/1000 hours exposure vs. 0.23/1000 h in elite weight lifting men. Often, two contributing factors causing wrist injuries are encountered: a) loss of balance causing the barbell to drift back behind the head of the power lifter, which hyperextends the wrist and b) the maximal weight. We report on an elite power lifting athlete preparing for the World Masters Bench press championships suffering two months of persisti

Laparoscopic Hill's vagotomy by the abdominal wall lifting method.

We performed laparoscopic Hill's vagotomy by the abdominal wall lifting method in nine patients with intractable duodenal ulcer. Our original I-type lifting bar is a curved stainless-steel rod 5 mm in diameter. One I-type lifting bar is inserted intraperitoneally into each of the right and left hypochondrial regions. An incision is made in the lesser omentum near the gastroesophageal junction, and the right esophageal wall and right crus of the diaphragm are dissected and exposed. The posterior trunk of the vagus nerve is identified and divided. Then the neurovascular bundle is dissected and d
