BACKGROUND: Listeriosis is a food-borne disease caused by the Gram-positive Bacillota (Firmicute) bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. Clinical L. monocytogenes isolates are often resistant to clinically used lincosamide clindamycin, thus excluding clindamycin as a viable treatment option.
OBJECTIVES: We have established newly developed lincosamide iboxamycin as a potential novel antilisterial agent.
METHODS: We determined MICs of the lincosamides lincomycin, clindamycin and iboxamycin for L. monocytogenes, Enterococcus faecalis and Bacillus subtilis strains expressing synergetic antibiotic res

Monitoring the use of antibiotics is relevant due to the public health impact of microbial resistance, adverse effects, and costs. We present data on the consumption of macrolides, lincosamides, streptogramins and amoxicillin/clavulanate (AMC) between 2007 and 2010 in the in-and outpatient healthcare setting in 10 European countries provided by IMS Health. Antibiotics were classified according to the anatomical therapeutic chemical classification and consumption was expressed in defined daily doses/1000 inhabitants/day (DIDs). We analysed the number of prescriptions by diagnostic codes between

We report the identification of isolates of Borrelia burgdorferi strain B31 that exhibit an unusual macrolide-lincosamide (ML) or macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin A (MLS(A)) antibiotic resistance pattern. Low-passage isolates were resistant to high levels (>100 microg/mL) of erythromycin, spiramycin and the lincosamides but were sensitive to dalfopristin, an analogue of streptogramin B. Interestingly, the high-passage erythromycin-resistant strain B31 was resistant to quinupristin, an analogue of streptogramin A (25 microg/mL). Biochemical analysis revealed that resistance was not due to an

The objective of this study was to determine and compare the antimicrobial resistance profiles of clinical Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (n = 90) and Staphylococcus aureus (n = 61) isolates from different animal species in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Among S. pseudintermedius isolates from dogs (n = 86), resistance to penicillin (87.2%) was most common followed by amoxicillin (76.7%) and amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (67.4%). A total of 25 isolates were found to be resistant to oxacillin of which 21 were mecA-positive and multidrug resistant (MDR). The most frequent MDR pattern was penicillins-lin

Streptococcus suis, an emerging zoonotic pathogen, causes invasive infections and substantial economic losses in the pig industry worldwide. Antimicrobial resistance against 22 antibiotics was studied for 200 S. suis strains collected in different geographical regions of France. Most of the strains (86%) showed resistance to at least one antibiotic with a low rate of resistance to fluoroquinolones, penicillins, pleuromutilin, and diaminopyrimidine-sulfonamides, and a higher rate to macrolides-lincosamides and tetracycline. Multi-resistance patterns were observed in 138 strains; three of them b

Clinical management of bacterial vaginosis (BV) is difficult owing to inaccurate diagnostic tests, limited drug choices, and a high rate of recurrence. To our knowledge, there has not been a previous study of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes in community practice using next-generation sequencing (NGS). A case-control study (1 : 1 age-matched with and without BV) was undertaken in a series of 326 nongravid women of reproductive age with symptoms of BV to determine the prevalence of AMR genes. NGS was used to describe the complete vaginal microbiota and identify bacterial genes associated wi

In a prospective study involving eight veterinary clinics during 1995 and 1996, samples from first-time and recurrent cases of canine pyoderma were collected by a needle technique. Three hundred and ninety-four staphylococci were isolated and their susceptibility to various antimicrobial drugs was assessed by a microdilution technique. Resistance to macrolides, lincosamides, fusidic add, tetracycline and streptomycin was significantly more common in isolates from the recurrent cases than from the first-time cases; 20 per cent of the isolates from the first-time cases were resistant to three or

Introduction: Antibiotic use is an important risk factor for Clostridium difficile infection (CDI). Prior meta-analyses have identified antibiotics and antibiotic classes that pose the greatest risk for CDI; however, CDI epidemiology is constantly changing and contemporary analyses are needed. Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between CDI and important antibiotic classes in recent years using the FDA Adverse Event Report System (FAERS). Methods: FAERS reports from January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2017 were analyzed. The Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Act

Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus, GBS) is a pathogen which causes neo natal sepsis, meningitis, and invasive infections in the elderly and people with medical conditions. Macrolide and lincosamide resistance rates of GBS strains have been increasing worldwide. A macrolide resistance gene, erythromycin ribosomal methylase (erm), typically confers macrolides, lincosamides, streptogramin B resistance phenotype. However, in the current study, we recovered and characterized 3 clinical ermB-PCR-positive isolates of GBS with L phenotype. The presence of ermB and lnuB (lincosamide nucle

Lincomycin is widely used in respiratory and gastrointestinal infection in veterinary medicine and food animal production. Campylobacter members are vital foodborne pathogens causing campylobacteriosis, and the resistance to lincosamides is seldom reported. To date, only the rRNA methyltransferase Erm(B) has been confirmed to be associated with lincosamides resistance in Campylobacter. In this study, we identified a lnu(C) variant conferring lincomycin resistance in this pathogen of chicken origin. The Lnu(C) encoded by this gene variant showed substitution at position 8 (Asn8Lys), 11 (Phe11Le

Although penicillin remains the first-choice treatment for Streptococcus pyogenes infection, macrolides are important alternatives for allergic patients and lincosamides are recommended together with β-lactams in invasive infections. S. pyogenes may exhibit macrolide resistance because of active efflux (mef genes) or target modification (erm genes), the latter conferring cross resistance to lincosamides and streptogramin B. Worldwide, resistance is restricted to a limited number of genetic lineages, despite resistance genes being encoded on mobile genetic elements. For reasons that are not com

Antibiotic resistance in bacteria is typically conferred by proteins that function as efflux pumps or enzymes that modify either the drug or the antibiotic target. Here we report an unusual mechanism of resistance to macrolide-lincosamide antibiotics mediated by mycobacterial HflX, a conserved ribosome-associated GTPase. We show that deletion of the hflX gene in the pathogenic Mycobacterium abscessus, as well as the nonpathogenic Mycobacterium smegmatis, results in hypersensitivity to the macrolide-lincosamide class of antibiotics. Importantly, the level of resistance provided by Mab_hflX is e

Macrolide and lincosamide (ML)-resistant streptococci and enterococci from tonsillar and colon swabs from 33 pigs and 99 pork carcasses swabs from animals originating from different farms in Belgium were isolated, and their ML resistance phenotypes and genotypes were determined by disk diffusion test and PCR assay, amplifying the ermB gene and the mefA gene. From each of the 33 pigs and 88 of the 99 carcasses' swabs, at least one resistant strain was isolated. The predominant phenotype was the constitutively expressed macrolides, lincosamides and streptogramin B (MLS(B)) phenotype. This phenot

Approximately 8,000 isolates of Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus dysgalactiae, Streptococcus uberis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli, isolated by 25 veterinary laboratories across North America between 2002 and 2010, were tested for in vitro susceptibility to beta-lactam, macrolide, and lincosamide drugs. The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of the beta-lactam drugs remained low against most of the Gram-positive strains tested, and no substantial changes in the MIC distributions were seen over time. Of the beta-lactam antimicrobial agents tested, only ceftiofur showe

Despite their trace concentrations in the environment, contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) pose potential risks to human health, particularly for vulnerable populations like the elderly. However, current research provides limited insight into the relationship between CECs and sleep quality in older adults. The current study involved 3096 seniors aged 60 and above through face-to-face interviews. Urine samples were collected to biomonitor 50 CECs. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). To study the association between CECs and sleep quality, multivariabl

BACKGROUND: The widespread nature of plastic pollution has given rise to wide scientific and social concern regarding the capacity of these materials to serve as vectors for pathogenic bacteria and reservoirs for Antimicrobial Resistance Genes (ARG). In- and ex-situ incubations were used to characterise the riverine plastisphere taxonomically and functionally in order to determine whether antibiotics within the water influenced the ARG profiles in these microbiomes and how these compared to those on natural surfaces such as wood and their planktonic counterparts.
RESULTS: We show that plastic

The aim of this study was to examine phenotypic and genotypic antimicrobial resistance of staphylococci from milk samples from cows with subclinical and clinical mastitis and from cows without mastitis symptoms to methicillin, tetracyclines, macrolides and lincosamides (ML). Of 207 strains, including 34 S. aureus and 173 coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS), 11 (6.4%) CNS strains were phenotypically resistant to methicillin. The mecA gene was detected by PCR only in two S. xylosus strains and one strain of S. epidermidis and S. simulans. No methicillin-resistant S. aureus strains were observ
