Ab initio study of carbon-chlorine bond cleavage in carbon tetrachloride.

Chlorinated solvents in groundwater are known to undergo reductive dechlorination reactions with Fe(ll)-containing minerals and with corroding metals in permeable-barrier treatment systems. This research investigated the effect of the reaction energy on the reaction pathway for C-Cl bond cleavage in carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). Hartree-Fock, density functional theory, and modified complete basis set ab initio methods were used to study adiabatic electron transfer to aqueous-phase CCl4. The potential energies associated with fragmentation of the carbon tetrachloride anion radical (CCl4-) into a

Self-Enhanced Luminophore with an Intrinsically Integrated "Energy Ladder" and CdIn2S4-Enabled Coreactant Activation for Electrochemiluminescence Sensing.

In recent years, electrochemiluminescence (ECL) has attracted widespread attention in bioanalysis and clinical diagnostics. However, improving its luminescence efficiency remains a key challenge. In this work, an efficient ECL system was constructed by synergistically regulating the energy utilization of the luminophore and the activation of the coreactant. A lanthanide-based coordination framework luminophore, Gd/Tb-DPA/DHTA, was designed, in which an intrinsically integrated "energy ladder" enables efficient energy transfer and utilization between the ligands and lanthanide ions. Meanwhile,

A Self-Configurable BUS Network Topology Based on LoRa Nodes for the Transmission of Data and Alarm Messages in Power Line-Monitoring Systems.

Power transmission lines transfer energy between power plants and substations by means of a linear chain of towers. These towers are often situated over extensive distances, sometimes in regions that are difficult to access. Wireless sensor networks present a viable solution for monitoring these long chains of towers due to their wide coverage, ease of installation and cost-effectiveness. The proposed LoRaBUS approach implements and analyses the benefits of a linear topology using a mixture of LoRa and LoRaWAN protocols. This approach is designed to enable automatic detection of nearby nodes,

Robustness of LETd-optimized multi-ion therapy against range and setup uncertainties: evaluation and enhancement with carbon-, oxygen-, and neon-ion beams.

Objective. The LET trilemma-an inherent conflict between target dose homogeneity, range robustness, and high dose-averaged linear energy transfer (LETd)-poses a major challenge in treatment optimization. To ensure accurate beam delivery in multi-ion therapy, this study evaluated the effects of range and setup uncertainties on LETd-optimized treatment plans and explored strategies to overcome this trilemma, framed within the phase I LETdescalation trial for head and neck cancers.Approach.Six head and neck cancer patients representing diverse tumors were selected. Multi-ion therapy plans using ca

Partial abdominal carbon-ion FLASH irradiation spares lethality compared to conventional irradiation: impact of LET and dose rate.

BACKGROUND: Ultra-high dose rate (FLASH) therapy has attracted attention for its potential to effectively target tumors while preserving healthy tissues. Although the biological effects of FLASH therapy have been well-documented with electrons, photons, and protons, data regarding carbon-ions are limited. This study aimed to investigate the biological effects of carbon-ions on the intestines of mice to determine whether carbon-ions exhibit the FLASH effect. Simultaneously, we aimed to identify the parameters influencing its occurrence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Partial abdominal irradiation was p

Technical note: Investigation of dose and LETd effect to rectum and bladder by using non-straight laterals in prostate cancer receiving proton therapy.

BACKGROUND: Parallel-opposed lateral beams are the conventional beam arrangements in proton therapy for prostate cancer. However, when considering linear energy transfer (LET) and RBE effects, alternative beam arrangements should be investigated. PURPOSE: To investigate the dose and dose averaged LET (LETd ) impact of using new beam arrangements rotating beams 5°-15° posteriorly to the laterals in prostate cancer treated with pencil-beam-scanning (PBS) proton therapy. METHODS: Twenty patients with localized prostate cancer were included in this study. Four proton treatment plans for each pat

FRoG: An independent dose and LETd prediction tool for proton therapy at ProBeam® facilities.

PURPOSE: Particle therapy is becoming increasingly available world-wide for precise tumor targeting, its favorable depth dose deposition, and increased biological damage to tumor tissue compared to conventional photon therapy. As demand increases for improved robustness and conformality, next-generation secondary dose calculation engines are needed to verify treatment plans independently and provide estimates for clinical decision-making factors, such as dose-averaged linear energy transfer (LETd ) and relative biological effectiveness (RBE). Mitochondrial DNA damage in the hair bulb: can it be used as a noninvasive biomarker of local exposure to low LET ionizing radiation?

Purpose: Our aim was to evaluate whether mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) damage in hair bulbs could be a suitable biomarker for the detection of local exposure to ionizing radiation.Materials and methods: Mouse hair was collected 4 and 24 hours, 3 and 10 days after single whole-body exposure to 0, 0.1, and 2 Gy radiation. Pubic hair (treated area) and scalp hair (control area) were collected from 13 prostate cancer patients before and after fractioned radiotherapy with an average total dose of 2.7 Gy to follicles after five fractions. Unspecified lesion frequency of mtDNA was analyzed with long PCR,

Rejoining and misrejoining of radiation-induced chromatin breaks. IV. Charged particles.

We have recently reported the kinetics of chromosome rejoining and exchange formation in human lymphocytes exposed to gamma rays using the techniques of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and premature chromosome condensation (PCC). In this paper, we have extended previous measurements to cells exposed to charged particles. Our goal was to determine differences in chromatin break rejoining and misrejoining after exposure to low- and high-linear energy transfer (LET) radiation. Cells were irradiated with hydrogen, neon, carbon or iron ions in the LET range 0.3-140 keV/microm and were inc

Galactic Cosmic Radiation Induces Persistent Epigenome Alterations Relevant to Human Lung Cancer.

Human deep space and planetary travel is limited by uncertainties regarding the health risks associated with exposure to galactic cosmic radiation (GCR), and in particular the high linear energy transfer (LET), heavy ion component. Here we assessed the impact of two high-LET ions 56Fe and 28Si, and low-LET X rays on genome-wide methylation patterns in human bronchial epithelial cells. We found that all three radiation types induced rapid and stable changes in DNA methylation but at distinct subsets of CpG sites affecting different chromatin compartments. The 56Fe ions induced mostly hypermethy

Adaptation of the microdosimetric kinetic model to hypoxia.

Ion beams present a potential advantage in terms of treatment of lesions with hypoxic regions. In order to use this potential, it is important to accurately model the cell survival of oxic as well as hypoxic cells. In this work, an adaptation of the microdosimetric kinetic (MK) model making it possible to account for cell hypoxia is presented. The adaptation relies on the modification of damage quantity (double strand breaks and more complex lesions) due to the radiation. Model parameters such as domain size and nucleus size are then adapted through a fitting procedure. We applied this approac

Variation in RBE for Survival of V79-4 Cells as a Function of Alpha-Particle (Helium Ion) Energy.

High linear energy transfer (LET) α particles are important with respect to the carcinogenic risk associated with human exposure to ionizing radiation, most notably to radon and its progeny. Additionally, the potential use of alpha-particle-emitting radionuclides in radiotherapy is increasingly being explored. Within the body the emitted alpha particles slow down, traversing a number of cells with a range of energies and therefore with varying efficiencies at inducing biological response. The LET of the particle typically rises from between ~70-90 keV μm(-1) at the start of the track (dependin

Microdosimetric model for the induction of cell killing through medium-borne signals.

Microbeam, medium-transfer and low-dose experiments have demonstrated that intercellular signals can initiate many of the same biological events and processes as direct exposure to ionizing radiation. These phenomena cast doubt on cell-autonomous modes of action and the linear, no-threshold carcinogenesis paradigm. To account for the effects of intercellular signals, new approaches are needed to relate dosimetric quantities to the emission and processing of signals by irradiated and unirradiated cells. In this paper, microdosimetric principles are used to develop a stochastic model to relate a

Uncertainties in radiation effect predictions for the natural radiation environments of space.

Future manned missions beyond low earth orbit require accurate predictions of the risk to astronauts and to critical systems from exposure to ionizing radiation. For low-level exposures, the hazards are dominated by rare single-event phenomena where individual cosmic-ray particles or spallation reactions result in potentially catastrophic changes in critical components. Examples might be a biological lesion leading to cancer in an astronaut or a memory upset leading to an undesired rocket firing. The risks of such events appears to depend on the amount of energy deposited within critical sensi

Modelling of DNA breaks and the formation of chromosome aberrations.

We present results of some calculations that convert double-strand breaks to dicentrics by means of a repair-misrepair model. The method uses Monte Carlo techniques to determine the positions of the double-strand breaks and to determine the dicentric yields for comparison with those obtained experimentally in human lymphocytes following irradiation in G0. The model is able to describe the linear-quadratic curves of dicentric yield following low LET irradiation, but underpredicts by a factor of about 1.5-2.0 the high LET neutron curves. The effects of including corrections for interphase death

Detection of DNA based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer of polyelectrolyte-protected CdTe quantum dots as energy donors.

The approach for DNA detection was established by using a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) system, in which the energy donor was poly-diallyldimethylammonium chloride-protected quantum dots and the energy receptor was ethidium bromide (EB) inserting into the double stranded DNA. The concentration of the probe DNA, EB and NaCl was optimized. Under the optimized conditions, the FRET system has a stable signal and good reproducibility. The linear range is 7.7-61.6 nM with the correlation coefficient of 0.998 and the limit of detection is 7.7 nM. This method is simple and sensitive, a

An examination of the correlation between antagonist coactivation of the abdomen and rotational kinematics in skilled golfers.

The objective was to examine how phase-specific abdominal antagonist co-activation (CoA) influences trunk rotational kinematics in skilled golfers. Thirty male amateurs (19.7 ± 0.7 years; handicap 9.6 ± 2.4) performed 6 iron swings with synchronised motion capture and surface electromyography of the external obliques (EO). Pearson correlations and linear regression were applied. CoA showed distinct phase-dependent effects. During take-away, higher CoA correlated with greater peak pelvic velocity (r = 0.460; r2 = 0.21), indicating stabilising function. Early downswing CoA was negatively associa

Hyperbranched dielectric polymer networks exhibiting giant energy storage density at 250 °C.

Harsh-environment requirements of electrical and electronic systems demand advanced dielectrics with high energy storage density at elevated temperatures. Heat-resistant polymers are usually designed with densely packed molecular chains to maintain structural integrity. Unfortunately, the narrowed inter-chain spacing causes severe charge transfer under high electro-thermal fields, prohibiting capacitive energy storage beyond 200 °C. Here we report hyperbranched dielectric polymer networks as a solution to the persistent challenge. The hyperbranched topological junctions not only transform the
