BACKGROUND: Lingual thyroid is a rare congenital anomaly resulting from the aberrant migration of thyroid tissue during embryonic development. Although frequently asymptomatic, its identification in military aircrew poses particular challenges given the rigorous standards of aeromedical certification.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 37-year-old male military helicopter pilot was incidentally diagnosed with lingual thyroid during routine health screening. The patient remained asymptomatic throughout the clinical course. Comprehensive evaluations-including thyroid function tests, biochemical profiling, ce

Hyperprolactinemia and prolactinoma in patients with long-term primary hypothyroidism have been recognized for decades. We report a case of 57-year-old female patient with lingual thyroid and cretinism who had a high serum prolactin level (greater than 200 ng/ml) and a pituitary tumor with suprasellar and parasellar extension. The tumor regressed to a size undetectable by CT scan after 2 years of thyroid hormone replacement therapy, but complete normalization of the hyperprolactinemia required additional bromocriptine therapy. This patient showed generalized short metacarpal and phalangeal bon

OBJECTIVE: Management of ectopic lingual thyroid (ELT) must balance the morbidity of disease with the morbidity of treatment. We investigate clinical outcomes associated with modern treatment options and analyze the role of transoral surgery in the treatment algorithm for ELT.
METHODS: This was a retrospective chart review of ELT patients treated at a tertiary care center from 1/1/1979 to 12/31/2019. In addition, a systematic review of the literature from 1979 to 2021 for reports of ELT was performed. Symptoms defined as high-risk were dysphagia, dysphonia, dyspnea, neck swelling, bleeding, a

Ectopic thyroid tissue can be seen anywhere from the foramen caecum to the lower neck. Most frequently it presents as a thyroglossal duct cyst associated with a normal thyroid gland. Less common is total ectopia, which can occur as a lingual thyroid or occasionally in non-lingual locations. Malignant transformation of such ectopic tissue is extremely uncommon. Only 21 cases of lingual thyroid carcinomas have been reported until 1971. We present, to our knowledge, the first case of a papillary carcinoma in a non-lingual ectopic thyroid in the absence of an orthotopic thyroid.

Lingual tonsillitis can cause various signs and symptoms including nocturnal or supine cough, constant discomfort in the throat, glossal pain, and otalgia. Most patients with lingual tonsillitis have already had palatine tonsillectomy. A lingual tonsil may be visible only by using a laryngeal mirror. An embedded foreign body can cause recurrent tonsillitis with abscess formation, and life-threatening airway obstruction may result. Aberrant lingual thyroid may be the only functioning thyroid tissue. Cryosurgery and the CO2 laser have made lingual tonsillectomy a safe and simple procedure. An ab

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for benign nonfunctional thyroid nodules or functional lingual thyroid gland in a pediatric population.
METHODS: Four pediatric patients (four female; mean age 13.50 ± 4.04, range 8-17 years) with either benign thyroid nodules or mildly obstructive lingual thyroid glands were treated with RFA from 2020 to 2021 were evaluated. The inclusion criteria for RFA therapy were (i) age < 18 years; (ii) benign cytopathological results on ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration; (iii) pressure or pain symptoms caused by the

Ectopic thyroid is the presence of thyroid tissue outside its normal cervical seat. It results from abnormal embryological development. We report the case of an ectopic lingual thyroid found during maneuvers of intubation in a patient of 56 years old. The examination found a rhonchopathy with sleep apnea syndrome and sleep in a sitting position. Endoscopy showed a posterior lingual tumour. The cervical echography showed an absent thyroid in the normal place. Scintigraphy, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging confirmed the diagnosis of ectopic lingual thyroid position. The treatme

Lingual goitre was found in two adolescents suffering from mild dysphagia. Since there were typical changes in lingual sonomorphology, sonographic evaluation was easy to perform. Lingual thyroid was less echogenic than normal thyroid tissue. Ultrasound may support the decision of the initial treatment and is useful to guide further therapy.

A 72-yr-old woman who had previously undergone partial thyroidectomy for "toxic goiter" and subhyoid gland resection presented with signs and symptoms of ectopic lingual thyroid at the base of the tongue. The combination of lingual subhyoid and pretracheal thyroid is a rarity with only three cases reported. Discovery of ectopic thyroid tissue should raise suspicion of other ectopic thyroid tissues along the path of embryologic migration from its origin to the porta hepatis. This may necessitate assessment of radionuclide uptake and imaging of numerous areas. Sodium levothyroxine is the mainsta

INTRODUCTION: The lingual thyroid gland refers to ectopic thyroid tissue situated at the base of the tongue. This rare condition occurs when the thyroid gland fails to descend to its usual position in the pre-tracheal area during embryonic development.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 23-year-old female who presented with throat discomfort and progressive difficulty of swallowing upon examination there was a mass at the level of the base of the tongue. She was investigated with a thyroid function test, neck ultrasound, at the tongue's base, and head and neck CT scan. With a diagnosed

Ectopic thyroid is an uncommon embryological aberration characterized by the presence of thyroid tissue at a site other than in its usual pretracheal region. Usually it occurs along the path of descent of the developing thyroid primodium from the foramen caecum, commonest being lingual followed by sublingual and in the anterior midline of neck at, or below, the level of the hyoid bone. It is unusual for lingual thyroid to present simultaneously with another ectopic thyroid; reported here are two such cases.

Median ectopic thyroid may be encountered anywhere from the foramen caecum to the diaphragm. Non lingual median aberrant thyroid (incomplete descent) usually found in the infrahyoid region and malignant transformation in this ectopic thyroid tissue is very rare. We report an extremely rare case of papillary carcinoma in non lingual median aberrant thyroid in a 25-year-old female. The differentiation between a carcinoma arising in the median ectopic thyroid tissue and a metastatic papillary carcinoma from an occult primary in the main thyroid gland is also discussed.

The presence of simultaneous two ectopic foci of thyroid tissue (dual ectopic thyroid) is rare, and few cases have been reported in the literature. The ectopic thyroid tissue is an extremely uncommon embryological aberration due to the alterations occurring during the embryological development with incomplete migration of thyroid precursors. Commonly ectopic thyroid tissue is a midline structures, but the lateral location is possible but very rare. Ectopic thyroid is common in women and can vary in size from a microscopic focus to a few centimeters. The normal process of migration of the thyro

An 8-year-old girl with a lingual thyroid was evaluated because of a tumor at the base of the tongue. Ultrasound showed a hypoechogenic homogeneous parenchymatous structure at the base of the tongue consistent with thyroid tissue. Suboptimal levothyroxine treatment resulted in longstanding TSH stimulation causing a lingual goiter.

Lingual thyroid is a rare congenital disorder displaying ectopic thyroid tissue at the base of the tongue. This is the most common location for ectopic thyroid tissue and is usually the only thyroid tissue present. This is a case report of a 16-year-old female who presented with nasal congestion. Fiberoptic laryngoscopy showed swelling at the base of the tongue and an ultrasound examination of the neck was without visible thyroid tissue. A 99mTc-pertechnetate scintigraphy confirmed the clinical diagnosis. As the patient was euthyroid and without symptoms active surveillance was planned.

Ectopic thyroid tissue results from the embryonic failure of the thyroid gland to descend along the thyroglossal duct, resulting in the presence of thyroid tissue in an abnormal location. One of the most common locations where ectopic thyroid tissue (ETT) is found is at the base of the tongue, referred to as a lingual thyroid, having an estimated prevalence of 1 out of 100,000 to 300,000 in healthy individuals. We present the case of a 15-year-old female with a progressively enlarging mass at the base of her tongue, associated with dysphagia and sleep apnoea. Hormonal tests revealed hypothyroi

BACKGROUND: Only 1 case with dual thyroid ectopy and a normally located thyroid gland has been reported.
METHODS: We present the case of a 71-year-old woman who had 1-sided lateral neck swelling in the right submandibular space, which grew and doubled in size within 1 year. A CT scan demonstrated 2 right submandibular, lobulated, heterogeneously enhanced masses, an ectopic lingual thyroid, and bilateral thyroid goiter. A Tc-99m sodium pertechnetate thyroid scan revealed a cold area in the right lateral neck region below the submandibular gland, an ectopic lingual thyroid, and bilateral pretra

It occurs along the path of descent of the developing thyroid primodium from the foramen cecum. It most commonly presents itself as a lingual thyroid and is the only thyroid in 70% of all cases. It is extremely rare for two ectopic foci of thyroid tissue to be present simultaneously. Resistance to thyroid hormone (RTH) coexisting with ectopic thyroid is rare. Here we report a case of RTH with ectopic thyroid. A ten-year-old girl had been misdiagnosed as congenital hypothyroidism and treated with levothyroxine since she was born. Ten-year follow-up showed that the elevated thyrotropin was never suppressed by levothyroxine and no signs indicating hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism despite elevated FT3 and FT4 levels. Therefore the girl developed no defects in physical and cognitive development. Pituitary adenoma was excluded by magnetic resonance imaging. Ultrasonography did

The underlying causes of 35 children with primary congenital hypothyroidism at the Children's Hospital were studied. There were 21 girls and 14 boys. Serum T4 and TSH level, 24 hours 131I uptake, and technetium-99m thyroid scintigraphy were performed after discontinuation of synthetic thyroid hormone for 4-6 weeks. Athyrosis was the most common cause and accounted for forty-three per cent of the patients. Twenty per cent of the patients had thyroid hypoplasia. Ectopic thyroid was found in thirty-three per cent of the patients. Only a patient whose diagnosis was organification defect had slight
