[Cognitive and linguistic indexes in children with early hemispheric lesion].

Prospective studies of development following early focal brain injury have identified deficits across a range of cognitive, linguistic and affective domains. In most cases these deficits are quite subtle and often not detected on standardized behavioral tests. Nonetheless, more detailed tests of neuropsychological functioning have documented subtle, persistent profiles of impairment. These contrasting findings have been cited in defense of two conflicting beliefs: plasticity and hemispheric equipotentiality theories on one side and early hemispheric specialization on the other. Cross-linguistic study of lateral misarticulation using electropalatography.

This paper reports on some preliminary aspects of a collaborative cross-linguistic study of normal and disordered Japanese and British English speech. The investigation compares lateralised productions of parallel s which are abnormal in the two languages. EPG and acoustic recordings were made of four Japanese and four British subjects. The EPG patterns were classified according to certain criteria, such as the presence or absence of complete constriction between the tongue and the hard palate, and the area and location of this contact. Findings revealed that lateralised articulations varied b

Linguistic intergroup bias: differential expectancies or in-group protection?

The linguistic intergroup bias describes the tendency to communicate positive in-group and negative out-group behaviors more abstractly than negative in-group and positive out-group behaviors. This article investigated whether this bias is driven by differential expectancies or by in-group protective motives. In Experiment 1, northern and southern Italian participants (N = 151) described positive and negative behaviors of northern or southern protagonists that were either congruent or incongruent with stereotypic expectancies. Regardless of valence, expectancy-congruent behaviors were describe

English or Perish? The Value of Linguistic Capital in the Social Sciences and Humanities.

This article examines the relationship between linguistic practices and funding success in Canadian social sciences and humanities. Through a mixed-methods approach combining data on 56,680 successful and unsuccessful grant applications submitted to the Canadian Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and 45 interviews with past members of review committees, we analyse how language intersects with knowledge hierarchies and disciplinary cultures. Our findings show that writing a grant proposal in English rather than in French is associated with slightly higher chances of securing fundin

Linguistic Performance and Quality of Life in Patients with Low-Grade Gliomas.

Low-grade gliomas (LGGs) may affect language functions and health-related quality of life (HRQoL), particularly when located in brain areas essential for language. The present study investigates linguistic performance and HRQoL in patients with prefrontal cortex (PFC) and motor-sensory cortex LGGs. Data from 15 patients who underwent a standardized preoperative assessment, including linguistic and HRQoL measures, were analyzed and compared with healthy controls and published norms. Self-reported physical and communication functioning were relatively preserved in both tumor groups, whereas psyc

Digital linguistic sovereignty and Kazakh language policy in the digital environment.

This article examines the impact of the digital environment on the status and place of language. The focus is on the concept of digital linguistic sovereignty, understood as a nation's ability to ensure the functional competitiveness of the language in the age of artificial intelligence and big data. In this regard, Kazakhstan presents a unique case study of a country transitioning from traditional language protection to the active construction of digital sovereignty. As a state undergoing active nation-building, the country simultaneously demonstrates one of the highest levels of digitalisati

Infants' Sleep Supports the Emergence and Mastery of Locomotor and Linguistic Skills.

Infant sleep is disrupted around the onset of motor milestones, but the causal mechanisms underlying this relationship are unclear. This study aims to corroborate prior reports of the link between locomotor milestone onset and sleep disruptions and expand the literature by asking whether language milestones are also associated with sleep disruptions. Time-series changepoint detection analyzed parent reported milestone onset data and sleep data of two age cohorts collected remotely through an online app and baby monitor system. Disruptions to sleep were found relative to the onsets of first cra

Embedded dyads: How the personal network relates to linguistic accommodation.

Language serves as a key medium through which individuals express and negotiate social belonging. By observing individuals' behavior within an interaction, we can access the relational stance they adopt and infer the social relationships that link the two interactants. This process is particularly studied within the framework of the Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT). According to CAT, speakers tend to align linguistically with their interlocutors to signal social proximity. Yet, most analyses remain focused on the psychological and dyadic levels, without considering the broader social i

Neural Mechanisms of Bidirectional Visuo-Linguistic Transformation in Interactive Communication.

Human communication requires the flexible transformation of visual input into verbal descriptions and the reconstruction of mental imagery from language. However, the neural mechanisms underlying these bidirectional transformations during social interaction remain poorly understood. Using hyperscanning fMRI and a role-switching communicative task, we investigated how individuals alternately encode visual stimuli into language and decode language into mental imagery within an interactive context. Whole-brain analyses identified brain regions implicated in these processes. Based on these finding

Linguistic-cognitive intervention in a case of early-onset Alzheimer's disease.

Early-Onset Alzheimer's Disease (EOAD) is an atypical variant of dementia that usually presents with impairments in language, visuospatial abilities, executive functions, or complex motor skills, with an early onset before the age of 65. This case study investigates the effect of a weekly language-cognitive intervention program in a patient with EOAD, diagnosed at the age of 58. The following protocols were applied for assessment before, during, and after the intervention: the Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination - Revised (ACE-R), the Arizona Battery for Communication Disorders of Dementia (AB

Linguistic and Clinical Validation of the Polish Version of the Walking Impairment Questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: Intermittent claudication is one of the most common symptoms of peripheral arterial disease. The Walking Impairment Questionnaire (WIQ) is frequently used to assess patients suffering from intermittent claudication as it measures walking distance, speed, and ability to climb stairs. Although the questionnaire has been translated and employed in different countries, no validated Polish version is available yet. The aim of this study was to translate and validate the Polish version of the WIQ. METHODS: One hundred patients with IC who qualified for endovascular treatment were enroll

Size Sound Symbolism Modulates Linguistic Processing: An ERP Study.

The size of physical objects is systematically associated with specific speech sounds used to refer to these objects. This phenomenon, termed size sound symbolism, has been demonstrated with a number of different behavioral measures such as word rating or word selection tasks. Yet, there is little data on where and how such sound-symbolic associations come into play within the brain's cognitive processing hierarchy. In the present EEG study, we investigated whether the neural activation of associations based on size sound symbolism can be automatic by nature. Participants were presented with s

Brain activation for language and its relationship to cognitive and linguistic measures.

Language learning and use relies on domain-specific, domain-general cognitive and sensory-motor functions. Using fMRI during story listening and behavioral tests, we investigated brain-behavior associations between linguistic and non-linguistic measures in individuals with varied multilingual experience and reading skills, including typical reading participants (TRs) and dyslexic readers (DRs). Partial Least Square Correlation revealed a main component linking cognitive, linguistic, and phonological measures to amodal/associative brain areas. A second analysis only in TRs revealed a stronger a

Linguistic network in early deaf individuals: A neuroimaging meta-analysis.

This meta-analysis summarizes evidence from 44 neuroimaging experiments and characterizes the general linguistic network in early deaf individuals. Meta-analytic comparisons with hearing individuals found that a specific set of regions (in particular the left inferior frontal gyrus and posterior middle temporal gyrus) participates in supramodal language processing. In addition to previously described modality-specific differences, the present study showed that the left calcarine gyrus and the right caudate were additionally recruited in deaf compared with hearing individuals. In addition, this

Managing linguistic obstacles in multidisciplinary, multinational, and multilingual research projects.

Environmental challenges are rarely confined to national, disciplinary, or linguistic domains. Convergent solutions require international collaboration and equitable access to new technologies and practices. The ability of international, multidisciplinary and multilingual research teams to work effectively can be challenging. A major impediment to innovation in diverse teams often stems from different understandings of the terminology used. These can vary greatly according to the cultural and disciplinary backgrounds of the team members. In this paper we take an empirical approach to examine s

Joint attention and its linguistic representation in dialogue: embodiment revisited.

Lakoff and Johnson, among many others, have discussed the role of the human body in structuring meaning in communication, aiming to reveal the interrelation between the human body, language, and cognition. This study revisits the concept of embodiment and investigates its interactive nature functioning in speakers constructing repeated structures in conversation, based on the hypothesis made in this work that the joint attention of interlocutors essentially indicates the interaction of their embodied experience of the language used in the situated context, where speakers not only share their p
