Leptospiral antibodies in captive lion tamarins (Leontopithecus sp) in Brazil.

Serum samples from 73 lion tamarins of three species living at the Centro de Primatologia do Rio de Janeiro were tested for antibodies against serovars of Leptospira interrogans by microscopic agglutination test. Antibodies were detected in serum samples of 15% of tested samples. Seroreactivity prevalence was lower than that described in other non-human primates and could be explained by the arboreal behaviour of these animals. Icterohaemorrhagiae was the most common serogroup.

"The lion, the witch and the wardrobe": impact on sibs of individuals with AAT deficiency.

Alpha(1)-antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency is a genetic disorder that may cause serious pulmonary or liver impairment in children or adults. Although genetic sequencing of the AAT gene has only been available for 20 years, analysis of the amount and electrophoretic mobility of the AAT protein has allowed clinical phenotyping for more than 40 years. There have been no studies assessing the psychological impact of having a sib affected by AAT deficiency. Twenty-five participants drawn from the Alpha-1 Research Registry completed a questionnaire and semi-structured interview. Respondents were supporti

Maternal flexibility in Galápagos sea lions mitigates climate impacts but not population decline.

The Galápagos sea lion is an endangered marine apex predator that has experienced a 50% to 75% population decline over the last 50 yr. Using 21 yr of data, we present the first long-term analysis of pupping trends and pup survival in this species, revealing how extreme climate oscillations may shape population dynamics and future trends. We found that the Caamaño colony has been in decline since monitoring began in 2003, with the rate accelerating significantly after the 2010 reproductive period. This pattern cannot be explained by climate effects or reduced female fecundity but is more likely

Endometrial hyperplasia and pyometra in captive lions (Panthera leo) and tigers (Panthera tigris).

Endometrial hyperplasia (EH) is a pathologic condition of the uterus with increased endometrial gland to stroma ratio compared to normal cyclic uterine proliferation. In domestic animals, EH often involves cystic distension of proliferating endometrial glands and may be concurrent with pyometra. In large captive nondomestic felids, an association between EH and pyometra is common; however, detailed species differences between the histological uterine findings in lions (Panthera leo) and tigers (Panthera tigris) and clinical manifestations have yet to be described. Uterine sections from 14 lion

Stroke effort and relative lung volume influence heart rate in diving sea lions.

The dive response, bradycardia (decreased heart rate) and peripheral vasoconstriction, is the key mechanism allowing breath-hold divers to perform long-duration dives while actively swimming and hunting prey. This response is variable and modulated by factors such as dive duration, depth, exercise and cognitive control. This study assessed the potential role of exercise and relative lung volume in the regulation of heart rate (fH) during dives of adult female California sea lions instrumented with electrocardiogram (ECG), depth and tri-axial acceleration data loggers. A positive relationship b

Tuberculosis in wild South American sea lions Otaria flavescens stranded in Chubut, Argentina.

Pinniped tuberculosis, commonly caused by Mycobacterium pinnipedii, is a zoonotic disease reported in free-living and captive otariid species of the southern hemisphere. Currently, data concerning pinniped tuberculosis in South America are scarce, reinforcing the need for further studies of the disease in free-ranging pinnipeds. In this study, we investigated the presence of tuberculosis in South American sea lions Otaria flavescens (SASLs) stranded along the Chubut coastline (Argentina). Necropsies were performed in 9 SASLs, and tissue samples were collected for histopathology, bacteriology,

Reproductive cycle stage assessment using vaginal cytology evaluation in African lions (Panthera leo).

Vaginal cytology evaluation is an economic, non-invasive technique for indirect monitoring of fluctuations in estrogen concentrations, and thus progression of the estrous cycle. This technique is widely used in domestic dogs for determining timing of artificial insemination. There, however, are only a few reports on the vaginal cytology of non-domestic felids, including lions. This study was conducted, therefore, to describe the vaginal epithelial changes throughout the reproductive cycle of African lions, and to investigate the efficacy of vaginal cytology assessments for predicting reproduct

DEVELOPMENT OF RETROBULBAR AND AURICULOPALPEBRAL NERVE BLOCKS IN CALIFORNIA SEA LIONS (ZALOPHUS CALIFORNIANUS).

Eye lesions are commonly observed in pinnipeds. Clinical assessment is challenging because animals are often blepharospastic and under inhalant anesthesia the globe rotates ventrally, making observation difficult. Retrobulbar and auriculopalpebral nerve block techniques have been developed in other species to alleviate these difficulties and allow for a more thorough ophthalmic exam. Ocular nerve block techniques were developed for California sea lions (CSLs) (Zalophus californianus) using lidocaine hydrochloride 2%. To develop the retrobulbar block, a variety of needle sizes, anatomic approac

Zoonotic vector-borne bacterial pathogens in California mountain lions (Puma concolor), 1987-2010.

Sera collected from 442 mountain lions in 48 California counties between the years of 1987 and 2010 were tested using immunofluorescence assays and agglutination tests for the presence of antibodies reactive to Yersinia pestis, Francisella tularensis, Bartonella henselae, Borrelia burgdorferi, and Anaplasma phagocytophilum antigens. Data were analyzed for spatial and temporal trends in seropositivity. Seroprevalences for B. burgdorferi (19.9%) and B. henselae (37.1%) were relatively high, with the highest exposure in the Central Coast region for B. henselae. B. henselae DNA amplified in mounta

Severe Sea Lion Bites in Urban Cold-Water Swimmers.

BACKGROUND: A series of sea lion bites in open-water swimmers recently gained the attention of the national and international media. Pinniped (the clade including seals and sea lions) bites historically have been in people who hunt or handle marine mammals. As populations of humans and pinnipeds continue to grow, interactions with animals by those participating in recreational activities are likely to become more frequent. CASE REPORTS: In December of 2017 and January of 2018, four sea lion (Zalophus californianus) bites in humans occurred at a popular open-water recreational swimming area in

Gleason 6 prostate cancer: serious malignancy or toothless lion?

Autopsy studies of men without known prostate cancer suggest that a substantial reservoir of prostate cancer that does not cause symptoms or death exists within the population. The majority of these cancers are Gleason 6 tumors and are frequently detected by prostate-specific antigen-based prostate cancer screening. There is strong evidence from longitudinal cohort studies of men with both treated and untreated Gleason 6 prostate cancer to suggest that Gleason 6 disease, when not associated with higher-grade cancer, virtually never demonstrates the ability to metastasize and thus represents an

Primary pneumonic plague contracted from a mountain lion carcass.

BACKGROUND: Primary pneumonic plague is a rare but often fatal form of Yersinia pestis infection that results from direct inhalation of bacteria and is potentially transmissible from person to person. We describe a case of primary pneumonic plague in a wildlife biologist who was found deceased in his residence 1 week after conducting a necropsy on a mountain lion. METHODS: To determine cause of death, a postmortem examination was conducted, and friends and colleagues were interviewed. Physical evidence was reviewed, including specimens from the mountain lion and the biologist's medical chart,

Isolation of Mycobacterium bovis from baboons, leopards and a sea-lion.

This study reports on two series of cases of Mycobacterium bovis infection in zoo animals. The first was in a captive population of baboons (Papio hamadryas) and the second in a mixed group of wild mammals, including four leopards (Panthera uncia and Panthera pardus) and a sea-lion (Otaria byrona). The isolation and identification of strains of M. bovis confirmed the presence of M. bovis infections in both zoos. The epidemiological study using genetic markers such as the IS6110-based DNA fingerprinting system made it possible to differentiate between M. bovis strains. The M. bovis strains isol

Cannabinoid receptor 1-labeled boutons in the sclerotic dentate gyrus of epileptic sea lions.

Pathology in the dentate gyrus, including sclerosis, is a hallmark of temporal lobe epilepsy, and reduced inhibition to dentate granule cells may contribute to epileptogenesis. The perisomatic-targeting axonal boutons of parvalbumin-expressing interneurons decrease in proportion with granule cells in temporal lobe epilepsy. In contrast, dendrite-targeting axonal boutons of somatostatin-expressing interneurons sprout exuberantly in temporal lobe epilepsy. A third major class of GABAergic interneurons expresses cannabinoid receptor type 1 (CB1) on their terminal boutons, but there is conflicting

Conservation Management of the Endangered Asiatic Lions in Gujarat, India, Using GPS Satellite Telemetry.

Endangered Asiatic lions (Panthera leo persica) are found in the Asiatic Lion Landscape, Gujarat, which includes protected areas and a multi-use land matrix. Therefore, monitoring lions' space-use and spatio-temporal location is vital for managing various facets of human-lion interaction. Our study demonstrates how this was achieved by tracking lions using GPS radio-collars, triggering prompt action via an efficient communication network across political and forest administrative boundaries. We monitored the movement of 19 individual lions for 436.5 ± 32 days and also derived the mean daily ac

Filarial infections in California sea lions vary spatially within the Gulf of California, Mexico.

At least two species of filarial worms, Dirofilaria immitis and Acanthocheilonema (Dipetalonema) odendhali, infect otariid pinnipeds, including the California sea lion (Zalophus californianus). To date, evidence of infection in sea lions has come from dead or captive animals, and little is known about filariasis in free-living populations. We sampled 45 California sea lion adults and 197 pups captured at 12 rookeries from different ecological regions within the Gulf of California and detected and quantified D. immitis and A. odendhali microfilariae in blood smears. We investigated differences

Serologic evaluation of New Zealand sea lions for exposure to Brucella and Leptospira spp.

A serologic survey of anti-Brucella and antileptospiral antibodies was conducted on 147 adult, female New Zealand sea lions (Phocarctos hookeri). Most sea lions (n=138) were sampled at Sandy Bay, Enderby Island, Auckland Islands (50°30'S, 166°17'E), January 2000-March 2005. Nine were sampled at Otago, New Zealand (46°0'S, 170°40'E); four in April 2008 and five in March 2009. Serum from one of the Enderby Island females was weakly positive for antibodies to Brucella abortus using the competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and one female had a low titer for Leptospira interrogans serovar

Patterns in age-seroprevalence consistent with acquired immunity against Trypanosoma brucei in Serengeti lions.

Trypanosomes cause disease in humans and livestock throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Although various species show evidence of clinical tolerance to trypanosomes, until now there has been no evidence of acquired immunity to natural infections. We discovered a distinct peak and decrease in age prevalence of T. brucei s.l. infection in wild African lions that is consistent with being driven by an exposure-dependent increase in cross-immunity following infections with the more genetically diverse species, T. congolense sensu latu. The causative agent of human sleeping sickness, T. brucei rhodesiense

Geographical dissemination of Leptospira interrogans serovar Pomona during seasonal migration of California sea lions.

Leptospirosis is one of the most widespread bacterial zoonoses in the world and affects most mammalian species. Although leptospirosis is well documented and characterized in terrestrial species, less information is available regarding the distribution and impact of leptospirosis in marine mammals. Additionally, the role of animal migrations on the geographical spread of leptospirosis has not been reported. Periodic epizootic outbreaks of acute leptospirosis among California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) have been reported since 1971. In this study, we collected samples from California se
