Global, regional, and national burden trends of lip and oral cavity cancer among individuals aged 60 and above from 1990 to 2021: a systematic analysis based on the 2021 global burden of disease data.

BACKGROUND: Lip and oral cavity cancer (LOCC) is one of the most common malignancies among the elderly, facing challenges such as insufficient early diagnosis, difficulties in late-stage treatment, and a propensity for metastasis and recurrence, which contribute to poor prognoses. However, there remains a lack of systematic analyses regarding the global, regional, and national burden of LOCC specifically within the elderly population. METHODS: This study utilized data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 database, including age-standardized incidence rates (ASIR), age-standardized pre

Selected presentations of lip enlargement: clinical manifestation and differentiation.

Lip enlargement may be an important symptom of either systemic or local diseases. On the basis of selected age-matched clinical cases we present the possible causes of lip swelling. We describe the most representative symptoms and recommend treatment of these pathologies. We differentiate lip swelling in Miescher syndrome, monosymptomatic form of Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome, lip swelling in erythema multiforme and Stevens-Johnson syndrome and lip hemangioma and mucous extravasation cyst. We compare different causes of lip edema and indicate the most helpful diagnostic and treatment methods.

Low molecular weight fucoidan modified nanoliposomes for the targeted delivery of the anti-inflammation natural product berberine.

The inflammatory response is the basis of many diseases, such as atherosclerosis and ulcerative colitis. Inhibiting inflammatory response is the key to treating these diseases. Berberine hydrochloride (BBR), a natural product, has shown effective inflammation inhibitory activity. However, its distribution throughout the body results in a variety of serious side effects. Currently, there is a lack of targeted delivery systems for BBR to inflammatory sites. In view of the fact that the recruitment of inflammatory cells by activated vascular endothelial cells is a key step in inflammation develop

Cationic liposomes encapsulating IL-2 selectively induce apoptosis and significantly reduce the secretion of cytokines on M1-murine polarized macrophages.

Inflammatory diseases pose a global challenge due to the critical role of macrophages in their pathogenesis. This study evaluated the effects of cationic liposomes encapsulating IL-2 (LIP-IL-2) on murine peritoneal macrophages (MP) polarized towards M1 and M2 phenotypes. M1 MP (CD86+), which overexpressed IL-2Rα and CD14 receptors, underwent apoptosis following LIP-IL-2 treatment, whereas M2 MP (CD206+) were unaffected. Furthermore, LIP-IL-2 significantly reduced the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including IL-6, TNF-α, IFN-γ, and IL-12, exclusively in M1 macrophages. These findings

Lymphocytic Interstitial Pneumonia.

Lymphocytic interstitial pneumonia (LIP) is a rare lung disease on the spectrum of benign pulmonary lymphoproliferative disorders. LIP is frequently associated with connective tissue diseases or infections. Idiopathic LIP is rare; every attempt must be made to diagnose underlying conditions when LIP is diagnosed. Computed tomography of the chest in patients with LIP may reveal ground-glass opacities, centrilobular and subpleural nodules, and randomly distributed thin-walled cysts. Demonstrating polyclonality with immunohistochemistry is the key to differentiating LIP from lymphoma. The 5-year

Intestinal microbiota link lymphopenia to murine autoimmunity via PD-1+CXCR5-/dim B-helper T cell induction.

T cell lymphopenia results in peripheral homeostatic expansion to maintain the T cell immune system, which is termed lymphopenia-induced proliferation (LIP). LIP is a potential risk for expanding autoreactive clones to become pathogenic in human and murine autoimmune diseases. However, the ontogeny of T cells that induce autoantibody production by autoreactive B cells in LIP remains unclear. Transfer of CD4+CD25- conventional T (Tc) cells into T-cell-deficient athymic nude mice has been previously reported as a LIP-induced autoimmune model which develops organ-specific autoimmune diseases and

Enhanced transdermal efficiency of curcumin-loaded peptide-modified liposomes for highly effective antipsoriatic therapy.

Psoriasis is one of the most influential and fastest-growing inflammatory diseases of the skin. Curcumin (CRC) is an effective antipsoriatic drug that is often carried by nanoparticles or liposomes mainly administered via the skin. However, the therapeutic effectiveness and bioavailability of this drug are restricted due to the functions of the skin barrier to liposomes. Herein, we proposed a peptide-modified curcumin-loaded liposome (CRC-TD-Lip) to expedite the transdermal delivery of curcumin and enhance the inhibition of psoriasis. CRC-TD-Lip was prepared and dispersed uniformly with high s

Lymphocytic interstitial pneumonia in a patient with mixed connective tissue disease - A case report.

Lymphocytic interstitial pneumonia (LIP) is an uncommon interstitial lung disease that is characterized by an interstitial infiltrate of lymphoplasmacytic cells. While idiopathic LIP appears to be extremely rare, most reported cases of LIP have been associated with coexisting immune derangements, particularly autoimmune diseases such as Sjögren's syndrome. In this report, we describe the presentation of LIP in a patient with underlying mixed connective tissue disease.

Complete Resolution of Lymphoid Interstitial Pneumonia in a Patient With Juvenile Myelomonocytic Leukemia Treated With Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplant: Killing 2 Birds With 1 Stone.

Lymphoid interstitial pneumonia (LIP) is a rare disease characterized by benign reactive polyclonal proliferation of bronchus-associated lymphoid tissue after exposure to inhaled or circulating antigen(s), leading to a disease symptomatology similar to idiopathic interstitial pneumonia. Its association with diseases that are caused due to immune dysregulation (autoimmune diseases, congenital/acquired immunodeficiency, and allogeneic bone marrow transplant) and response to immunomodulatory/suppressive medications suggests an immunologic pathophysiology. Although LIP has been reported in associa

Reduced expression of C/EBPβ-LIP extends health and lifespan in mice.

Ageing is associated with physical decline and the development of age-related diseases such as metabolic disorders and cancer. Few conditions are known that attenuate the adverse effects of ageing, including calorie restriction (CR) and reduced signalling through the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) pathway. Synthesis of the metabolic transcription factor C/EBPβ-LIP is stimulated by mTORC1, which critically depends on a short upstream open reading frame (uORF) in the Cebpb-mRNA. Here, we describe that reduced C/EBPβ-LIP expression due to genetic ablation of the uORF delays th

Atypical presentation of tuberculosis.

Developing countries such as India face an intense situation with communicable diseases such as tuberculosis (TB). It is an inflammatory infectious granulomatous disease commonly affecting the lungs. Extrapulmonary TB presentations have been documented, with the orofacial region also being involved. TB usually presents as an ulcer in the oral cavity with tongue and lip being the favored sites. TB presenting as a lip swelling is unusual even if it is a secondary lesion with a primary pulmonary involvement. We present a lip swelling and discuss the differential diagnosis. Investigation of ultras

Case-based discussion: Lymphocytic interstitial pneumonia a rare presentation in an immunocompetent adult male.

Lymphocytic interstitial pneumonia (LIP) is a rare form of interstitial lung disease usually associated with other systemic diseases; however, idiopathic cases are being reported. As per recent ATS/ERS 2013 guidelines, diagnostic criteria of clinical, radiological and histopathological for LIP is same as 2002 except some cystic changes on HRCT chest. Many cases diagnosed in the past as LIP now turn out to be NSIP; therefore as per new ATS/ERS classification whenever anybody report a case of LIP, NSIP should always be kept in mind as differential diagnosis. Here we present a case of LIP in an i

The labile iron pool in human erythroid cells.

Although most cellular iron is firmly bound (e.g. in haemoglobin), some, the labile iron pool (LIP), is bound to low-affinity ligands. The LIP is regarded as the crossroads of cellular iron traffic. Using multi-parameter flow-cytometry of cells treated with the metal-sensitive sensor calcein and the cell-permeable chelator deferiprone, we studied LIP in various human erythroid cell populations in peripheral blood, bone marrow and culture. Erythroid maturation was found to be associated with a decrease in the LIP. In the peripheral blood, nucleated erythrocytes (normoblasts) had 5.8-fold and 8.

Upper lip swelling caused by a large dentigerous cyst.

Swelling of the upper lip can result from various diseases such as salivary tumors, infectious and inflammatory diseases and cysts. Among the latter, dentigerous cysts, typically involving unerupted teeth, are sometimes associated with supernumerary teeth in the maxillary anterior incisors region called the mesiodens. We report an unusual case of a large dentigerous cyst associated with an impacted mesiodens in a 42-year-old male who presented with a slow-growing swelling in the upper lip.

Lymphoid interstitial pneumonitis in a newly diagnosed late presenter of human immunodeficiency virus infection: a case report.

BACKGROUND: An increase has been described throughout the years in the frequency of various uncommon diseases in people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Particularly late presenters are associated with a significant risk not only for acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)-defining conditions but also for non AIDS-defining diseases which aggravate the prognosis of patients. Lymphoid interstitial pneumonitis (LIP) is one of these conditions described more often after the onset of HIV epidemic. LIP is a benign polyclonal lymphoproliferative disorder of the lung with not well ch
