Combination of essential oils from Ocimum americanum L., Ocimum gratissimum L., and Lippia multiflora Mold.: a potential solution for controlling the cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus (Acari: Ixodidae).

The cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus is one of the most significant ectoparasites affecting livestock in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. This tick causes substantial economic losses in cattle production by reducing weight gain and milk yield and by transmitting pathogens responsible for diseases such as babesiosis and anaplasmosis. Conventional control strategies rely largely on synthetic acaricides; however, their use poses risks to human health and the environment and has contributed to the rapid emergence of resistant tick populations. Under these circumstances, the search fo

Screening organic repellent compounds against Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae) present in plant essential oils: Bioassay plus an in silico approach.

In the Americas, Lutzomyia longipalpis is the most relevant sand fly species for the transmission of visceral leishmaniasis. For its vector control in Brazil, insecticide spraying has not shown persistent reduction in disease prevalence while some sand fly populations are reported resistant to the insecticides used in spraying. The usage of repellents and personal protection behavior can reduce vector borne diseases prevalence. Therefore, the search for new repellent compounds is needed to use together with insecticide spraying, especially from natural sources to overcome the resistance develo

Diversity in principal constituents of plants with a lemony scent and the predominance of citral.

In this study, we extracted essential oils from four species of plants with lemony scents (Melissa officinalis L., Aloysia citriodora Palau (= Lippia citriodora (Palau) Kunth), Thymus × citriodorus, Perilla citriodora (Makino) Nakai). We then examined the components of extracts using gas chromatography (GC) and GC-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A comparison of components indicated that the largest proportions of essential oils were caryophyllene (25%) in M. officinalis, geraniol (50%) in T. citriodorus, and citral (61 and 82%) in A. citriodora and P. citriodora. Moreover, we used a sensory evaluat

[Risk adjustment in external quality assurance with multivariate analysis].

Surgical clinics throughout Germany are under political and economical pressure. Comparing outcomes across clinics or ranking become more and more popular although there are no generally accepted and scientifically valid methods how to compare. Using original data of the external quality assurance project of the chamber of physicians of Westfalia-Lippia it is shown in this article that comparing raw data is often misleading. Differences in risk factors (case mix) have to be taken into consideration. A model using logistic regression methods to adjust for case mix in legality and morbidity of h
