Novel Statistical Analyses to Assess Hearing Outcomes After ABI Implantation in NF2 Patients: Systematic Review and Individualized Patient Data Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 develop bilateral vestibular schwannomas with progressive hearing loss. Auditory brainstem implants (ABIs) stimulate hearing in the cochlear nuclei and show promise in improving hearing. Here, we assess the impact of ABI on hearing over time by systematically reviewing the literature and re-analyzing available individual patient data. METHODS: A multidatabase search identified 3 studies with individual patient data of longitudinal hearing outcomes after ABI insertion in adults. Data were collected on hearing outcomes of different sound comple

Speechreading and its association with reading among deaf, hearing and dyslexic individuals.

Reading and speechreading are both visual skills based on speech and language processing. Here we explore individual differences in speechreading in profoundly prelingually deaf adults, hearing adults with a history of dyslexia, and hearing adults with no history of a literacy disorder. Speechreading skill distinguished the three groups: the deaf group were better speechreaders than hearing controls, who were better than the group with a history of dyslexia. The dyslexic group, while within range of hearing controls in terms of reading, nevertheless showed a residual deficit in speech/language

First auditory brainstem implant in the Czech Republic.

In the Czech Republic, the first implantation of a stimulation electrode into the brainstem was performed on 11 January 1999 in the Department of ORL, Head and Neck Surgery, The First Medical Faculty, Charles University in Prague, University Hospital Motol. The selected patient was a 40-year-old woman with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) who had previously undergone bilateral vestibular schwannoma surgery. Both tumours had been radically removed, the left-sided tumour in 1987, the right-sided one in 1988. She had been completely deaf since the last operation, i.e., for 11 years. The surgery was

Neuropsychological studies of auditory-visual fusion illusions. Four case studies and their implications.

A heard speech sound which is not the same as the synchronized speech sound can sometimes give rise to an illusory phonological percept. Typically, a heard /ba/ combines with a seen /ga/ to give the impression that /da/ has been heard (McGurk, H. and MacDonald, J. Nature Lond. 264, 746-748, 1976). We report the susceptibility to this illusion of four individuals with localized brain lesions affecting perceptual function. We compare their performance to that of ten control subjects and relate these findings to the efficiency of processing seen and heard speech in separate and combined modalitie

Auditory- and Visual-Speech Evoked Activation of the Superior Temporal Gyrus Contralateral to the Cochlear Implant Predicts Speech Recognition Outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: Speech recognition outcomes vary widely in cochlear implant recipients, but the reasons for this variability are not well explained by patient history factors alone. Neuroplastic reorganization after both deafness and cochlear implant switch-on can affect how new recipients adapt to electrical hearing. In this study, we evaluate the associations between speech recognition outcomes and stimulus-evoked activation of cortical language processing areas. DESIGN: Forty-three newly implanted post-lingually deaf adult cochlear implant recipients (17 female, mean age at implantation: 58.5

Computerized Speechreading Training for Deaf Children: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Purpose We developed and evaluated in a randomized controlled trial a computerized speechreading training program to determine (a) whether it is possible to train speechreading in deaf children and (b) whether speechreading training results in improvements in phonological and reading skills. Previous studies indicate a relationship between speechreading and reading skill and further suggest this relationship may be mediated by improved phonological representations. This is important since many deaf children find learning to read to be very challenging. Method Sixty-six deaf 5- to 7-year-olds w

Visual speech circuits in profound acquired deafness: a possible role for latent multimodal connectivity.

It is commonly held that losing one sense provokes cross-modal takeover of deprived cortical areas, and therefore results in a benefit for the remaining modalities. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we assessed the impact of acquired deafness on the brain network related to speechreading and teased apart cortical areas with responses showing long-term reorganization, i.e. time-dependent plasticity over 4-48 months of deafness, from those expressing compensation, i.e. performance-related activity. Nine deaf patients (7 women, age; mean +/- SE. = 50.2 +/- 4.8) and control subje

Artificial intelligence enabled smart mask for speech recognition for future hearing devices.

In recent years, Lip-reading has emerged as a significant research challenge. The aim is to recognise speech by analysing Lip movements. The majority of Lip-reading technologies are based on cameras and wearable devices. However, these technologies have well-known occlusion and ambient lighting limitations, privacy concerns as well as wearable device discomfort for subjects and disturb their daily routines. Furthermore, in the era of coronavirus (COVID-19), where face masks are the norm, vision-based and wearable-based technologies for hearing aids are ineffective. To address the fundamental l

The McGurk effect in children with autism and Asperger syndrome.

Children with autism may have difficulties in audiovisual speech perception, which has been linked to speech perception and language development. However, little has been done to examine children with Asperger syndrome as a group on tasks assessing audiovisual speech perception, despite this group's often greater language skills. Samples of children with autism, Asperger syndrome, and Down syndrome, as well as a typically developing sample, were presented with an auditory-only condition, a speech-reading condition, and an audiovisual condition designed to elicit the McGurk effect. Children wit

Investigation of practices to support the complex communication needs of children with hearing impairment and cerebral palsy in a rural district of Kenya: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Rehabilitation services are scarce in low-income countries, where under-representation of some specialist professions has led to the role extension of others. An example of this can be found in Kilifi in Kenya where the role of speech and language therapy has been taken on by occupational therapists and teachers. AIMS: To investigate the communication practices used by these professional groups to support children with complex communication needs in a rural part of Kenya and to explore the ways in which this might be seen to facilitate or obstruct improved communication by asking

Phonology and reading: a response to Wang, Trezek, Luckner, and Paul.

Four critical responses to an article, "The Role of Phonology and Phonologically Related Skills in Reading Instruction for Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing" (Wang, Trezek, Luckner, & Paul, 2008), are presented. Issue is taken with the conclusions of the article by Wang and colleagues regarding the "necessary" condition of phonological awareness for the development of reading skills among deaf readers. Research findings (not cited by Wang and colleagues) are pointed out that reveal weak correlations between phonemic awareness and reading comprehension, and stronger correlations between

Lip-reading and eye-gaze discrimination are functionally lateralized across the left and right posterior superior temporal sulci.

The posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS) processes information from the eyes and the mouth that support social perception. To investigate the laterality of how these mechanisms function, we performed three experiments on lip and eye-gaze discrimination. In Experiment 1, participants (n = 18) performed lip-position and eye-gaze discrimination tasks in static facial expressions while transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was delivered over the left and right pSTS. Results showed a double dissociation in which disruption of the left pSTS impaired the lip-position task, while disruption of

Stimulation of the cochlear nucleus with multichannel auditory brainstem implants and long-term results: Freiburg patients.

Since 1992 18 patients with bilateral retrocochlear deafness have been provided with a multichannel auditory brainstem implant (ABI). The surgical procedure implies tumour removal and ABI implantation in one stage. Most implantations were via the translabyrinthine approach. The long-term follow-up varied between nine and 80 months. In one case auditory perception could not be achieved and in a second case post-operative stimulation was not possible as the subject died due to lung emboli. In all the other cases auditory perception was achieved and only two subjects became non-users during the f

Visual speech enhances phoneme separability in human superior temporal gyrus.

UNLABELLED: Visual speech, such as lipreading, facilitates spoken word recognition, but the neural mechanisms underlying audiovisual speech perception remain poorly understood. Visual cues may disambiguate fine-grained articulatory features during early perceptual stages or instead integrate with speech at more categorical, phoneme-level stages. To test how speech representations are modulated by visual input, we analyzed intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) signals recorded from 12 epilepsy patients performing an audiovisual speech perception task. Participants perceived 16 monosyllabic

Visual cognitive tests, central auditory function and auditory communication.

A cognitive, text-based test battery, presented as text on a computer screen (TIPS), was used to assess properties of central cognitive processing relevant for visual and audiovisual speech comprehension. TIPS was compared and contrasted with another, purely auditory, battery, ACE, aimed at assessing afferent (A), central (C) and efferent (E) auditory communicative functions. The results show that there is no overlap with the 'A' component, but some overlap between TIPS parameters and the 'C' component, especially when the auditory-language tests are used in the C estimate. However, the TIPS p

Dynamic neural oscillations underpin audiovisual gain from visual lip cues in speech noise.

Speech noise substantially impairs speech perception, whereas congruent lip movements provide effective visual support when auditory input is degraded. Using natural continuous Mandarin sentences, the present study recorded behavioral and electroencephalographic (EEG) data under speech noise conditions with different signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) to examine the dynamic neural mechanisms by which visual lip information facilitates speech perception. The results showed that speech noise significantly reduced speech recognition accuracy and weakened δ band activity and functional connectivity in t
