Amebiasis is a widespread parasitic infection caused by the human-specific protozoan Entamoeba histolytica (E.- histolytica). Tropical and subtropical regions with poor socioeconomic and sanitary conditions belong to endemic areas. The highest rates of E. histolytica infection are observed in India, Mexico, Africa, some parts ofCentral and South America. Up to 90% of infections remain asymptomatic, about 10% of patients develop amebic colitis. About 10% of symptomatic individuals may present with an extraintestinal manifestation, mostly amebic liver abscess (ALA). Clinical symptoms of ALA appe

BACKGROUND: Liver abscess is a common deep seated abscess in children; amebic liver abscess is associated with more local complications.
CASE CHARACTERISTICS: We report two preschool children presenting with short history of pain, fever and right upper quadrant pain. The abscess communicated with gastro-intestinal tract (ascending colon in case 1 and duodenum in case 2), and diagnosis of amebic liver abscess was confirmed by DNA PCR.
OUTCOME: Both children were successfully managed with intravenous antibiotics and catheter drainage.
MESSAGE: Gastrointestinal fistulization may be rarely seen

BACKGROUND: amebic liver abscess is frequently seen in endemic regions, and has a poor prognosis when diagnosis and treatment are inappropriate.
AIM: to evaluate and compare our own results; to propose a new classification and therapeutic algorithm.
DESIGN: an observational and retrospective study.
METHOD: medical records were reviewed for sex, age, signs and symptoms, images, laboratory tests, size, location, treatment, hospital stay, and morbidity-mortality.
RESULTS: sixteen patients with amebic liver abscess had been treated -9 were males, mean age was 30.56 years, all abscesses were so

STUDY OBJECTIVE: The most common extraintestinal manifestation of Entamoeba histolytica, the agent of amebiasis, is a hepatic abscess. This infection is common throughout the world and can be associated with life-threatening consequences. Given the often nonspecific nature of the complaints related to an amebic abscess, a retrospective review of patients with confirmed disease was done to recognize the most common patterns of presentation.
METHODS: A retrospective case series was conducted of all patients with confirmed amebic liver abscess over a 5-year period. All available emergency depart

Four weeks after a holiday in Kenya a 57-year-old woman developed a fever up to 40 degrees C, right upper abdominal pain, icteric sclerae, nausea and vomiting. Laboratory tests revealed leukocytosis (24,400/microliters), markedly accelerated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (123 mm/h) and moderately increased activity of liver enzymes in serum. The liver was unremarkable on ultrasound. Four days after hospitalization the patient complained of dyspnoea and pleuritic pain. Ultrasound examination and computed tomography showed an abscess in the right lobe of the liver. Amoebic abscess of the liver

UNLABELLED: In order to know the incidence and epidemiologic features of the Amebic Hepatic Abscess we realized this study in the medicine service. 86.67% were males, the average age was 41.38 +/- 18.60 years old being more frequent between 30 and 69 years old (74.48%). The more affected were farmers (60%), students (10%) and Housekeepers (6.67%). The average time of the disease was 12.12 +/- 6.35 dias. The most frequent symptoms were abdominal pain in the upper right quadrant (96.66%), Hepatomegaly (83.33%), Fever (82.22%), Diarrhea (37.77%), Nausea (36.66%), Jaundice (33.33%). The initial di

In a retrospective review covering 16 years divided into two time periods, 133 patients with amebic liver abscess were evaluated. Most of the patients were young, Hispanic men, and one-third had coexistent disease. A reliable diagnosis can be established in 24 hours using ultrasound or computed tomography scans. Over the entire time period, antiparasitic therapy was evolved to occupy a primary role and surgery was reserved for management of abscess complications.

Results of surgical treatment of hepatic amebic abscess in three hospitals during last three years are presented. Seventy four percent of patients admitted with complications of amebiasis have liver abscess. Of them 22% require surgical treatment and mortality is 8%. Nineteen years ago the amount of patients admitted with amebic complications was greater and a larger number of patients were operated; however mortality has not changed.

Amebic liver abscess responds readily to appropriate therapy, but diagnosis may be difficult. In the case described, the patient's signs and symptoms were atypical, suggesting a hematologic malignancy. The correct diagnosis was made only after ultrasound revealed a mass in the liver.

Twelve patients with amebic liver abscess were admitted to a university hospital. Ten of these patients were admitted through the emergency department. Patients, especially men from third world countries, with fever, right upper quadrant pain, and leukocytosis are at high risk for this disease and should have the diagnosis confirmed with amebic serology and ultrasonography or computed tomography.

Herein we report a 56-yr-old man with amebic liver abscess associated with a high level of alpha-fetoprotein that subsequently reduced to an undetectable level after successful treatment with metronidazole. To our knowledge, there has been no previous report of such an association in the literature.

Common complications of amebic liver abscesses include rupture into the thorax, pericardium, and peritoneum. Rupture into the gastrointestinal tract is extremely rare. We report a case of an amebic liver abscess rupturing into the duodenum, forming a wide fistulous tract. To our knowledge, this is the first case with radiological confirmation.

The clinical presentation of 48 patients with amebic liver abscess was no different than that reported in earlier studies. However, most patients were from countries endemic for parasitic disease. Failure to consider this diagnosis resulted in potentially avoidable surgery for six patients. Although metronidazole was successful primary therapy in 85% of 41 patients so treated, four of seven ruptured abscesses occurred in cases where metronidazole treatment failed. For assessment of factors that might predict metronidazole treatment failures, multiple parameters were analyzed. Of the factors ev

The charts of 50 patients with hepatic amebic abscesses diagnosed during 1976 in the Hospital de Especialidades del Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social and in the Unidad Hospitalaria La Paz in the city of Puebla, were reviewed: 39 were men and 11 women, with an age range between the third and sixth decade. It was necessary to resort to surgical treatment in 25 (50%) of the patients for one or various of the following reasons: failure of medical treatment, imminent perforation, septicemia, perforation or the occurrence of an extremely large abscess. The total mortality was 2%. In all cases med

The traditional management of amebic liver abscess which has ruptured into the peritoneal cavity has been conservative and 70% to 90% fatal. Laparotomy with complete toilet of the abscess and the peritoneal cavity has shown encouraging results. A comparative study of the management of 36 cases of intraperitoneal rupture of amebic liver abscess was carried out. Twenty-one cases were treated by laparotomy with 85.5% survival. Mortality for 15 cases treated conservatively was 80%. We believe that intraperitoneal rupture of amebic liver abscess can now be treated by laparotomy with much better res
