Preliminary study on cryptosporidiosis in livestock from Kuwait.

Out of 225 fecal samples (40 of calves, 128 of lambs and 57 of goat kids) received in the Veterinary Laboratories, Kuwait, 43 (19.1%) were found to be positive for Cryptosporidium using the conventional method, modified acid-fast stain, and the immunologic technique, the immuno-chromatography assay. Calf fecal samples showed the highest infection rate (37.5%), followed by goat kids (21%) and then Lambs (12.5%). Results obtained by conventional method were found to be consistent with those detected using the immunologic technique.

New developments in the immunodiagnosis of brucellosis in livestock and wildlife.

Although relatively effective diagnostic tests for brucellosis have been in existence for more than 100 years, it remains a serious, embedded and also a re-emerging disease in many parts of the globe. There are many factors besides suboptimal diagnosis that impede the complete and sustained eradication of animal brucellosis. In this review a case for the continued improvement of diagnostic methods is made through identifying existing shortcomings and considering what impact these have upon control and eradication. The focus is on developments in immunodiagnostics as these seem more likely to y

Brucellosis in pastoral and confined livestock: prevention and vaccination.

The traditional lifestyle and beliefs of pastoralists and small-scale farmers with confined livestock, together with certain farming environments, create favourable conditions for the spread and transmission of brucellosis. The risks associated with these practices are difficult to control because of a lack of alternatives and simple and/or affordable solutions. Brucellosis affects the health and productivity of livestock as well as that of their owners and caretakers and can have a deep economic impact. The control of brucellosis is likely to be cost effective. Good quantitative information o

[Campylobacteriosis of man : livestock as reservoir for Campylobacter species].

Over the last few years, infections with Campylobacter have significantly increased in Europe and Germany and these bacteria have even surpassed Salmonella as the most prevalent bacteria, causing gastroenteritis. Especially contamination during the handling and consumption of meat products seems to be the most important risk factor which plays a prominent role for transmission to man. In addition, contact with pets and other animals, drinking raw or improperly pasteurized milk, and the tenacity of Campylobacter in different environments, especially water, have also to be considered for an adeq

Seroepidemiological study of livestock brucellosis in a pastoral region.

A seroepidemiological study of Brucella infections in multiple livestock species in the Borana pastoral system of Ethiopia was performed between December 2007 and October 2008. A cross-sectional multi-stage sampling technique was employed to select 575 cattle, 1073 camels and 1248 goats from the target populations. Sera were collected from the animals, and serially tested using Rose Bengal test and complement fixation test. Overall prevalence and prevalence with respect to explanatory variables were established, and potential risk factors for seropositivity were analysed using a multivariable

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection in livestock species: an update.

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is a powerful technique in the field of assisted reproduction (ART) and provides exciting opportunities for studying the basic mechanisms of fertilization and early embryo development. Nevertheless, its application in agriculture and conservation biology has been greatly hampered by the low success rate reported for this method in respect of economically important species. Specifically, the rates of blastocyst formation and live newborn are greatly reduced when zygotes are generated by ICSI. Except for humans, ICSI remains a low efficiency technology in

The occurrence and antibiotic resistance of motile Aeromonas in livestock.

The present study was carried out to assess the prevalence of motile Aeromonas spp. in the faeces of clinically healthy sheep, cattle and horses and evaluate their susceptibility to some anti-microbial agents. Rectal swabs from 120 sheep, 85 cattle and 20 horses were examined for Aeromonas species using alkaline peptone water (pH 8.4) as the enrichment medium and Aeromonas Selective Agar containing 5 mg/l ampicillin as the isolation medium. Identification and antibiotic resistance of motile Aeromonas strains was performed using Gram Negative Enteric ID panel. Motile aeromonads were isolated fr

Cystic echinococcosis of livestock and humans in central Sudan.

New information was collected on cystic echinococcosis in livestock (camels, cattle and sheep) and humans in the central region of Sudan. The livestock data were collected in abattoir-based surveys in the towns of Omdurman, Tamboul and Wad Madani, between 1998 and 2001, and covered a total of 8205 animals. The highest prevalence of infection was found in the camels (44.6% of 242 infected), followed by the sheep (6.9% of 5595) and cattle (3.0% of 2368). Records were made of the sizes of the 1320 hydatid cysts detected in the livestock (907 in sheep, 71 in cattle, and 342 in camels), whether or

[Epidemiology of leptospirosis in a livestock production area of the Andes].

A cross-sectional study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of Leptospira infection in populations of workers, cattle, and pigs in livestock operations and to explore some environmental and production system variables associated with seropositivity. The research was done between November 1997 and February 1998 in the municipality of Don Matías, in the northern part of the department of Antioquia, Colombia. The area has a cold climate, and there is a "pigs-grasses-milk" production system that utilizes pig dung to fertilize grazing pastures. A total of 23 farms were studied, and blood sampl

[The significance of small mammals in the epizootiology of leptospirosis in livestock].

1. Favourite species of rodents in sheds and their surroundings are rats (Rattus norvegicus, R. rattus) and house mouse (Mus musculus). From the epizootiological point of view only R. norvegicus is important as the maintenance host of L. copenhageni. 2. In surrounding of sheds vole (Microtus arvalis) and back-striped field mouse (Apodemus agrarius) are sources of infection for livestock. 3. Transmission of leptospira occurs via infected environment. The tenacity of Leptospira mozdok and L. grippotyphosa under field conditions suffices to maintain the chain of infections.

Hair analysis as an indicator of mineral status of livestock.

Despite several inherent characteristics that would appear to make hair a useful biopsy tissue, many problems make interpretation of data derived from hair analysis difficult. Endogenous minerals are incorporated into hair by several routes. Most attention on hair mineral incorporation has focused on element uptake within the hair follicle. Minerals incorporated within the follicle are presumably chemically or physically associated with cortical cells of the hair shaft and reflect mineral status at the time that the hair filament was synthesized. Because hair follicles in most species regularl

In addition, trials have indicated the elimination of psoroptic mange from sheep by applying the compound to the animal using either conventional or less conventional methods of treatment. Mixed infections of Chorioptes spp., Psoroptes spp. and Sarcoptes spp., in cattle have also been controlled using spray applications of amitraz, where in some cases organochl

Prevalence of hydatidosis and cysticercosis in slaughtered livestock in Nigeria.

A survey was carried out at Kano abattoir in order to estimate the incidence of hydatidosis and cysticercosis in slaughtered livestock. Of the animal species examined, hydatid disease was found in sheep (11.4 per cent), goats (26.5 per cent), cattle (14.7 per cent) and camels (55.5 per cent). Cysticercus tenuicollis was found to be most prevalent in goats (34.2 per cent), followed by sheep (21.4 per cent) and cattle (0.1 per cent). Out of 4844 cattle examined, less than 2 per cent haboured Cysticercus bovis cysts; while Cysticercus ovis cysts were found in sheep (1 per cent) and goats (0.8 per

Global intI1 abundance quantifies livestock antimicrobial-resistance risk.

Livestock farming environments are major reservoirs of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), yet scalable genetic indicators that quantitatively capture AMR risk remain limited. The class 1 integrase gene intl1 is a hallmark of class 1 integrons (CL1s), which couple gene capture with horizontal transfer capacity and have emerged as leading candidates. However, their suitability as a direct proxy for livestock-associated AMR risk has not been rigorously tested at scale. Here we show that the abundance of intI1 functions as a robust quantitative indicator of livestock-associated AMR risk. Using a cust

African Lineage Brucella melitensis Isolates from Omani Livestock.

Brucellosis is a common livestock disease in the Middle East and North Africa, but remains poorly described in the region both genetically and epidemiologically. Traditionally found in goats and sheep, Brucella melitensis is increasingly recognized as infecting camels. Most studies of brucellosis in camels to date have focused on serological surveys, providing only limited understanding of the molecular epidemiology of circulating strains. We genotyped B. melitensis isolates from Omani camels using whole genome SNP assays and VNTRs to provide context for regional brucellosis cases. We identifi

Capripoxvirus-vectored vaccines against livestock diseases in Africa.

Five different viral diseases of livestock, lumpy skin disease (LSD), sheep pox (SPP), goat pox (GTP), Rift Valley fever (RVF) and peste des petits ruminants (PPR), circulate in the same regions of Africa, imposing a major burden on economic activity and public health. While commercial vaccines against these viruses are available, the cost of implementing regular vaccination regimens against multiple diseases is prohibitive for most African farmers. A single, affordable multivalent vaccine that simultaneously protects against all 5 diseases would therefore be of significant benefit to the live

Biosecurity strategies for conserving valuable livestock genetic resources.

The foot and mouth disease (FMD) epidemic in the UK in 2001 highlighted the threat of infectious diseases to rare and valuable livestock and stimulated a renewed interest in biosecurity and conservation. However, not all diseases resemble FMD: their transmission routes and pathological effects vary greatly, so biosecurity strategies must take this into account. Realism is also needed as to which diseases to exclude and which will have to be tolerated. The aim should be to minimise disease generally and to exclude those diseases that threaten the existence of livestock or preclude their nationa

Livestock, pathogens, vectors, and their environment: A causal inference-based approach to estimating the pathway-specific effect of livestock on human African trypanosomiasis risk.

Livestock are important reservoirs for many zoonotic diseases, however the effects of livestock on human and environmental health extend well beyond direct disease transmission. In this retrospective ecological cohort study we use pre-existing data and the parametric g-formula, which imputes potential outcomes to quantify mediation, to estimate three hypothesized mechanisms by which livestock can influence human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) risk: the reservoir effect, where infected cattle and pigs are a source of infection to humans; the zooprophylactic effect, where preference for livestock
