Metabolic recovery from exhaustive activity by a large lizard.

Gas exchange (VO2 and VCO2) and blood lactate concentration were measured in the lizard Amblyrhynchus cristatus at 25 and 35 degrees C during resting, running, and recovery after exhaustion (less than or equal to 180 min) to analyze the temperature dependency of metabolic recovery in this lizard. Amblyrhynchus exhausted twice as fast (4.2 vs. 8.8 min) at 25 degrees C than when running at the same speed at 35 degrees C. At both temperatures, VO2 and VCO2 increased rapidly during activity and declined toward resting levels during recovery in a manner similar to other vertebrates. Respiratory quo

TRIPLOID IN PARTHENOGENETIC SPECIES OF THE TEIID LIZARD, GENUS CNEMIDOPHORUS.

Mitotic figures from the bone marrow of three parthenogenetic species of Cnemidophorus (whiptail lizards) exhibit chromosome numbers in the triploid range. The species are C. velox with 68 chromosomes, C. tesselatus with 69, and C. exsanguis with 70. A fourth parthenogenetic species, C. perplexus, has 46 chromosomes, the same number as the bisexual subspecies C. tigris septentrionalis.

Understanding Genomic Landscapes of Differentiation in Round-Tailed Horned Lizards (Phrynosoma modestum).

Population divergence is promoted by divergent selection and inhibited by gene flow, but the mechanisms of and relationship between these two processes remain poorly understood. Developing a well-informed hypothesis of the selective pressures underlying divergence in a natural population requires a thorough understanding of both species structure and demographic history. In this study, we assess whole-genome sequences of round-tailed horned lizards (Phrynosoma modestum) from throughout the species range and combine phylogenetic analyses with genomic landscape scans to understand how current ge

Enantioselective hepatotoxicity of rac- epoxiconazole and epoxiconazole enantiomers in lizards (Eremias argus).

Epoxiconazole (EPX) is widely applied to control various fungal diseases in crops. However, the toxicological effects of EPX on reptiles remain unknown, especially at the enantiomer level. In this study, lizards were repeatedly exposed to rac-EPX, (+)-EPX, and (-)-EPX at doses of 10 and 100 mg/kg bw for 21 days. Low-dose exposure resulted in hepatic steatosis, while high-dose treatment caused more severe pathological changes, including large areas of cell necrosis, loss of cellular structure, and nucleus disappearance. The elevation of aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT),

Temperature-Dependent Bioaccumulation, Metabolism, and Hepatotoxicity of Flufiprole in Lizards (Eremias argus).

As a phenylpyrazole insecticide, flufiprole is an important substitute for fipronil in the agricultural field of China. However, its bioaccumulation and metabolism in terrestrial organisms especially in the lizards living in the agricultural area have rarely been investigated. As an ectothermic animal, lizards are also sensitive to temperature changes. Considering global warming, this study measured bioaccumulation, metabolism, and hepatotoxicity of flufiprole in the Chinese native lizard (Eremias argus) under different temperature stresses. Lizards exposed to flufiprole-contaminated soil adso

METASTATIC MINERALIZATION IN A ZOOLOGIC COLLECTION OF SPOT-TAILED EARLESS LIZARDS (HOLBROOKIASPP.).

Vitamin and mineral supplements are commonly used in diets for zoologic and companion animals. Because specific nutrient requirements are often unknown, informed decisions are based on literature for related species. Over 18 mon beginning in November 2017, an entire population of spot-tailed earless lizards (Holbrookia lacerata and Holbrookia subcaudalis) died (N = 33). All but two lizards were submitted for histopathology (94%). All examined cases had mineralization in at least one tissue; 71% (22 of 31) had multisystemic mineral deposits consistent with metastatic mineralization. No underlyi

Differences in Hematological Traits between High- and Low-Altitude Lizards (Genus Phrynocephalus).

Phrynocephalus erythrurus (Lacertilia: Agamidae) is considered to be the highest living reptile in the world (about 4500-5000 m above sea level), whereas Phrynocephalus przewalskii inhabits low altitudes (about 1000-1500 m above sea level). Here, we report the differences in hematological traits between these two different Phrynocephalus species. Compared with P. przewalskii, the results indicated that P. erythrurus own higher oxygen carrying capacity by increasing red blood cell count (RBC), hemoglobin concentration ([Hb]) and hematocrit (Hct) and these elevations could promote oxygen carryin

The pineal and circadian rhythms of temperature selection and locomotion in lizards.

The existence of a circadian rhythm of behavioral temperature selection has been demonstrated in lizards (Podarcis sicula) held on a thermal gradient in constant darkness. This rhythm becomes temporarily abolished during 1 week following parietalectomy and 2-3 weeks following pinealectomy. Parietalectomy does not affect the locomotor rhythm, while pinealectomy invariably lengthens the freerunning period of this rhythm. These results support the contention of separate control systems for the temperature selection rhythm and the locomotor rhythm. As neither rhythm is definitively abolished by pa

Direct and indirect effects of petroleum production activities on the western fence lizard (Sceloporus occidentalis) as a surrogate for the dunes sagebrush lizard (Sceloporus arenicolus).

The dunes sagebrush lizard (Sceloporus arenicolus) is a habitat specialist of conservation concern limited to shin oak sand dune systems of New Mexico and Texas (USA). Because much of the dunes sagebrush lizard's habitat occurs in areas of high oil and gas production, there may be direct and indirect effects of these activities. The congeneric Western fence lizard (Sceloporus occidentalis) was used as a surrogate species to determine direct effects of 2 contaminants associated with oil and gas drilling activities in the Permian Basin (NM and TX, USA): herbicide formulations (Krovar and Quest)

Genomic signatures of adaptation in native lizards exposed to human-introduced fire ants.

Understanding the process of genetic adaptation in response to human-mediated ecological change will help elucidate the eco-evolutionary impacts of human activity. In the 1930s red imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta) were accidently introduced to the Southeastern USA, where today they are both venomous predators and toxic prey to native eastern fence lizards (Sceloporus undulatus). Here, we investigate potential lizard adaptation to invasive fire ants by generating whole-genome sequences from 420 lizards across three populations: one with long exposure to fire ants, and two unexposed popul

Wall lizards display conspicuous signals to conspecifics and reduce detection by avian predators.

Visual signals are often under conflicting selection to be hidden from predators while being conspicuous to mates and rivals. Here, we investigated whether 3 different island populations of Aegean wall lizards (Podarcis erhardii) with variable coloration among diverse island habitats exhibit simultaneous camouflage and sexual signals. We examined whether signals appear better tuned to conspecific vision as opposed to that of avian predators, and whether background-matching camouflage and sexual signals are partitioned to specific body regions. This could facilitate both covert sexual signaling

Prevalence of antibodies against Leptospira sp. in snakes, lizards and turtles in Slovenia.

BACKGROUND: Leptospiral infections in poikilothermic (cold blooded) animals have received very little attention and the literature concerning natural infections of these animals is limited. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of leptospiral antibodies in reptiles, imported into Slovenia and intended to be pets in close contact with humans. A total of 297 reptiles (22 snakes, 210 lizards and 65 turtles) were tested for specific antibodies against serovars of Leptospira interrogans sensu stricto using the microscopic agglutination test (MAT). Live cultures of different serovars

Role of suprachiasmatic nuclei in circadian and light-entrained behavioral rhythms of lizards.

To establish whether the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) of the Ruin lizard (Podarcis sicula) play a role in entrainment of circadian rhythms to light, we examined the effects of exposure to 24-h light-dark (LD) cycles on the locomotor behavior of lizards with SCN lesions. Lizards became arrhythmic in response to complete SCN lesion under constant temperature and constant darkness (DD), and they remained arrhythmic after exposure to LD cycles. Remnants of SCN tissue in other lesioned lizards were sufficient to warrant entrainment to LD cycles. Hence, the SCN of Ruin lizards are essential both to

Seasonal activity and energetics of two species of varanid lizards in tropical Australia.

The field metabolic rates (FMR) and rates of water flux were measured in two species of varanid lizards over five periods of the year in tropical Australia. The energetics of these species were further investigated by directly measuring activity (locomotion) and body temperatures of free-ranging animals by radiotelemetry, and by measuring standard metabolic rate (over a range of body temperatures) and activity metabolism in the laboratory. Seasonal differences in the activity and energetics were found in these goannas despite similar, high daytime temperatures throughout the year in tropical A

The pineal complex, aggressive behavior and thermoregulation in curly-tailed lizards, Leiocephalus carinatus.

Male Leiocephalus carinatus exhibited five types of aggressive displays, two of which were used to quantify aggression in paired encounters. After the dominant and subordinate lizard were identified, the area over parietal eye/pineal gland of the latter was shielded. This resulted in the subordinate lizard selecting higher body temperatures, exhibiting more assertive displays toward the dominant lizard, and increasing its frequency of use of a heat source that was the limited resource, as defined in the test arena. All of these responses required 4-6 days to be expressed and were reversed when

Exploring the Development of Wild Microbiomes in the Eastern Fence Lizard.

This study examines the gut microbiome from faecal samples of a reptilian model (Sceloporus undulatus). The dynamic host-symbiote interactions between gut microbiota are essential in metabolic processes and overall health of the host organism. We used 16S rRNA gene sequencing to profile the bacterial community from the guts of wild Eastern Fence Lizards. Microbiome profiles were collected at four distinct time points when lizards were actively foraging in the environment and across four age groups, aiming to characterise the natural variation in bacterial diversity. Environmental bacteria such

Three millennia of lizard and snake consumption by Natufian foragers.

Squamate (lizard and snake) exploitation provides a rarely documented window into human dietary flexibility at the end of the Pleistocene. This study analyzes over three millennia of squamate remains from el-Wad Terrace (Israel), revealing that large-bodied snakes and lizards formed a substantial and consistent part of Natufian subsistence. Repeated evidence of butchery on snake vertebrae indicates regular consumption across all occupation phases. Shifts in squamate abundance and bone modification patterns correspond to shifts in site-use intensity and the relative contribution of human and an
