Neural correlates of motor learning: Network communication versus local oscillations.

Learning new motor skills through training, also termed motor learning, is central for everyday life. Current training strategies recommend intensive task-repetitions aimed at inducing local activation of motor areas, associated with changes in oscillation amplitudes ("event-related power") during training. More recently, another neural mechanism was suggested to influence motor learning: modulation of functional connectivity (FC), that is, how much spatially separated brain regions communicate with each other before and during training. The goal of the present study was to compare the impact

Cortical network formation based on subthalamic beta bursts in Parkinson's disease.

Recent evidence suggests that beta bursts in subthalamic nucleus (STN) play an important role in Parkinsonian pathophysiology. We studied the spatio-temporal relationship between STN beta bursts and cortical activity in 26 Parkinson's disease (PD) patients undergoing deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery. Postoperatively, we simultaneously recorded STN local field potentials (LFP) from externalized DBS leads and cortical activity using whole-brain magnetoencephalography. Event-related magnetic fields (ERF) were averaged time-locked to STN beta bursts and subjected to source localization. Our re

Large-scale cortical network properties predict future sound-to-word learning success.

The human brain possesses a remarkable capacity to interpret and recall novel sounds as spoken language. These linguistic abilities arise from complex processing spanning a widely distributed cortical network and are characterized by marked individual variation. Recently, graph theoretical analysis has facilitated the exploration of how such aspects of large-scale brain functional organization may underlie cognitive performance. Brain functional networks are known to possess small-world topologies characterized by efficient global and local information transfer, but whether these properties re

Neural plasticity in amplitude of low frequency fluctuation, cortical hub construction, regional homogeneity resulting from working memory training.

Working memory training (WMT) induces changes in cognitive function and various neurological systems. Here, we investigated changes in recently developed resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging measures of global information processing [degree of the cortical hub, which may have a central role in information integration in the brain, degree centrality (DC)], the magnitude of intrinsic brain activity [fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (fALFF)], and local connectivity (regional homogeneity) in young adults, who either underwent WMT or received no intervention for 4 we

Focal to bilateral tonic-clonic seizures are associated with widespread network abnormality in temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to identify whether the whole-brain structural network alterations in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and focal to bilateral tonic-clonic seizures (FBTCS) differ from alterations in patients without FBTCS. METHODS: We dichotomized a cohort of 83 drug-resistant patients with TLE into those with and without FBTCS and compared each group to 29 healthy controls. For each subject, we used diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging to construct whole-brain structural networks. First, we measured the extent of alterations by performing FBTCS-negative (FBTCS

Heterogeneous brain abnormalities in subjective cognitive decline converge on a common network and their transcriptional signature.

INTRODUCTION: Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) is increasingly recognized as closely related to future Alzheimer's disease (AD). Numerous neuroimaging findings in SCD are inconsistent. We tested whether the various findings localize to a common brain network. METHODS: Using a novel coordinate network mapping approach, we delineated common brain damage networks that were functionally connected to reported neuroimaging findings. We then decoded these common networks using microscale transcriptomic and chemo-architectures and psychological processes. RESULTS: We enrolled 45 studies comprising

EEG frequency and phase coupling during human information processing.

Neuronal activity during information processing is represented by oscillations within local or widespread neuronal networks. These oscillations may be recorded by the EEG (electroencephalogram). The oscillatory interaction between neuronal ensembles may be at one single frequency or at different frequencies due to non-linear coupling. The investigation of momentary coherence and phase enables the examination of synchronized oscillatory network activity during fast-changing cognitive processes. On this basis information transfer from occipital areas towards frontal areas could be described duri

Power of heterogeneous computing as a vehicle for implementing E3 medical decision support systems.

A computer system of PCs, workstations, minicomputers etc., connected together via a local area network or wide area network represents a large pool of computational power. Our aim is to use this power for the implementation of E3 (efficiency, effectiveness, efficacy) medical decision support system, which can be based on different models; the best of them are providing an explanation together with an accurate and reliable response. One of the most viable among models are decision trees, already used for many medical decision making purposes. In this paper we would like to present a heterogene

An Adaptive Track Segmentation Algorithm for a Railway Intrusion Detection System.

Video surveillance-based intrusion detection has been widely used in modern railway systems. Objects inside the alarm region, or the track area, can be detected by image processing algorithms. With the increasing number of surveillance cameras, manual labeling of alarm regions for each camera has become time-consuming and is sometimes not feasible at all, especially for pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras which may change their monitoring area at any time. To automatically label the track area for all cameras, video surveillance system requires an accurate track segmentation algorithm with small memor

The effect of the total small vessel disease burden on the structural brain network.

Different cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) lesion types have been shown to disrupt structural brain network individually. Considering that they often coexist, we investigated the relation between their collective effect using the recently proposed total SVD score and structural brain network on MRI in 95 patients with first transient ischemic attack (TIA) or ischemic stroke. Fifty-nine patients with and 36 without any SVD lesions were included. The total SVD score was recorded. Diffusion tensor imaging was performed to estimate structural brain connections for subsequent brain connectivity

Altered topological organization of brain structural network in Chinese children with developmental dyslexia.

Increasing evidence indicates that developmental dyslexia (DD) is a "disconnection syndrome", and new probes of connectome were applied to investigate the "disconnection" in DD. However, there is a lack of brain connectome studies of Chinese dyslexics, who may have a different neural impairment pattern due to the logographic nature of Chinese. The aim of this study was to investigate the topological organization characteristics of the DD brain using a structural network based analysis on the volumetric covariance, which is a method with the advantage of reflecting brain developmental changes.

A swin transformer and CNN fusion framework for accurate Parkinson disease classification in MRI.

Parkinson's disease ranks as the second most prevalent neurological disorder after Alzheimer's disease. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been extensively employed in Parkinson's disease (PD) detection using MR images. However, CNN models generally focus on local features while prone to capture global representations. On the other hand, the vision transformer (ViT) excels at capturing global features through its self-attention mechanism, but it compromises local feature representations. Additionally, the varying magnitude of MR data poses a challenge for ViT, potentially leading to the

A deep learning approach for radiological detection and classification of radicular cysts and periapical granulomas.

OBJECTIVES: Dentists and oral surgeons often face difficulties distinguishing between radicular cysts and periapical granulomas on panoramic imaging. Radicular cysts require surgical removal while root canal treatment is the first-line treatment for periapical granulomas. Therefore, an automated tool to aid clinical decision making is needed. METHODS: A deep learning framework was developed using panoramic images of 80 radicular cysts and 72 periapical granulomas located in the mandible. Additionally, 197 normal images and 58 images with other radiolucent lesions were selected to improve mode

Stereoelectroencephalography-based anatomo-electro-clinical subtyping reveals network-specific organization in parietal lobe epilepsy.

AIMS: This study aimed to use stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) to delineate the anatomo-electro-clinical correlations between seizure semiology and Brodmann area-based functional subregions in parietal lobe epilepsy (PLE), so as to improve the precise localization of seizure onset and the accuracy of presurgical diagnosis. METHODS: Patients with PLE who underwent SEEG were retrospectively included. Intracranial electrode contacts were localized based on Brodmann area (BA) anatomical divisions. Seizure semiology and ictal SEEG evolution were systematically quantified using a predefined scor

Morphological Evidence for a Unique Neuromuscular Functional Unit of the Human Vocalis Muscle.

Human vocalization is a complex process that is still only partially understood. Previous studies have suggested the possibility of a localized neuromuscular network of the larynx. Here we investigate this structure in human dissection specimens using multiple immunofluorescence and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In the area of the pars interna of the thyroarytenoid muscle, muscle fibers are present that are clearly differentiated from skeletal or cardiac muscle cells and show an intermediate ultrastructure. In addition, intramuscular neurons are present that are detectable by both el

Neural mechanisms underlying improved new-word learning with high-density transcranial direct current stimulation.

Neurobehavioral studies have provided evidence for the effectiveness of anodal tDCS on language production, by stimulation of the left Inferior Frontal Gyrus (IFG) or of left Temporo-Parietal Junction (TPJ). However, tDCS is currently not used in clinical practice outside of trials, because behavioral effects have been inconsistent and underlying neural effects unclear. Here, we propose to elucidate the neural correlates of verb and noun learning and to determine if they can be modulated with anodal high-definition (HD) tDCS stimulation. Thirty-six neurotypical participants were randomly alloc

Synchronization patterns suggest different functional organization in parietal reach region and dorsal premotor cortex.

The parietal reach region (PRR) and dorsal premotor cortex (PMd) form part of the fronto-parietal reach network. While neural selectivity profiles of single-cell activity in these areas can be remarkably similar, other data suggest that both areas serve different computational functions in visually guided reaching. Here we test the hypothesis that different neural functional organizations characterized by different neural synchronization patterns might be underlying the putatively different functional roles. We use cross-correlation analysis on single-unit activity (SUA) and multiunit activity
